Afrihost service terrible

Routers generally are not stateful. You are thinking of a firewall. Routers operate at layer 3. Tcp is layer 4 ;)

Anyway, there's something called a tcp keep alive which the game server and client should be sending to each other if the session is supposed to stay open. Maybe those are being lost somewhere? Given the packet loss I was seeing, I would blame this in combination with game servers with a low idle timeout.

That aside, connections on port 80 are not going to keep connections on gaming ports open. That particular port pair, if idle, remains idle even if you do a bunch of other traffic.

Hi Guys

Afrihost still working on DC's as we speak. Thanks for your patience

Hi Guys

Bloody hell, it takes you guys this long to finally acknowledge a problem that has been going on for more than a week?

Afrihost is using MTN , MTN uses NEOTEL , Internet service is truely terrible and we will be canceling our 50gig account at the end of the month , I recomend openweb.co.za they are in the same price range as Afrihost and they are still using the IS backbone.

Im pretty sure Afrihost will never see the ISP of the year award ever again and I hope they lose all their clients to Openweb.

TBH They should have some type of national quality controll for internet standards and just have Afrihost remove their products and refund all there clients, this is not what we signed up for. As if our internet isnt **** enough , now we have to deal with poor ISP services aswell for redicilous prices compared to other countries

Was on the edge of canceling my account last night after having authentication issues. Will let it run till month end and decide
I had authentication issues on Friday night as well and Sunday night, not to mention latency and high pings, that was enough for me to seek out a new ISP

I have the same issue - timeouts anywhere between every 10 to 20 minutes. Have tried getting feedback on Twitter - which they normally respond to pretty quickly. Now just NOTHING.

Where is their representative that frequents these forums - why do we not get any feedback from Afrihost?

I see on their website: (http://www.afrihost.com/site/network_status)

ADSL Disconnects

Medium Impact

Opened: 14:22 Mon, November 12, 2012

Clients have reported that they are getting disconnected from online services.

Afrihost engineers are investigating to ascertain the cause.

We will keep you posted

Sincere apologies if this is affecting you.

I have had lots of DCs after the switch, Ah support could not help me.
Ping times from Secunda to JHB was in the region of 600 - 1700ms, it used to be 60-80ms.

I run an online weather station with a Davis VP2 IP console and Arduino microcontroller based logging devices (some have like 2Kb of RAM), they all went crazy and required power resets a few times a day - I couldnt live with it so I just silently switched my data to Plugg, no issues since, everything is now running fine again, even better than before, with ping times between 40 - 70ms!

I still have my domain hosting with Ah but seeing that hosting is still via IS, I will just leave it alone.

I really hope Ah can sort out their crap, they are really p1ssing off a lot of people!

Wow. I'm glad that I'm not one of your children. "One more mistake son, and I'll chop off your other arm as well."
What a horrible thing to wish to a company with a great track record. (Until lately)

I bet you have a perfect score on your exams and you've never made a single mistake. Must be nice. Please write a book about your secret.

Can't be, he was a flawless child, remember? Perhaps it was one of his siblings. :p

Anyhow, back on topic...
It's 7am ish and speeds are up to normal. 3.6mb/s download locally, 2.3 international. Afrihost asked me to do a couple of tests after I logged a fault. But I'm getting the suspicion that the issue is only in the evenings.

not too sure about that
Test conducted on 14 November 2012 08:21 (4mb line)
Download Speed: 242 kbps (30.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 392 kbps (49 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 249 ms

Same issues here. Sometimes it's around 3+Mb/s, others it goes as low as yours. Although my upload is pretty stable(500kb/s+), downloads fluctuate like crazy, but it's been consistently bad since this weekend.

I really hope Afrihost are able to sort things out. If it's still like this at month's end, I'll have to consider switching to something else.
