Hi

I am looking to have my own personal web server pref tomcat (as I am used to the mechanics) for my own personal use.

So I see that Afrihost has a shared hosting service that has x GB storage and unlimited traffic and can host a MYSQL database along with a free domain.
Before I sign up to the service I would like to hear if it is possible and if anybody here did it before regarding the below.

So I have two questions that I would like input on from the community
1. Can you install a tomcat server on these hosting shared service and open the ports to the tomcat server for example port 8082.
2. Can you route the domain name to point to the tomcat server instead of a dedicated ip address?

Any input would be awesome or recommendations on different services that is affordable to achieve the same end result

Thank you

Hi

No unfortunately on shared hosting it's not possible. You can do it on a cloud server.

We are very much a proper hosting company. The biggest in SA ;)
Proper hosting company means no downtime AND support (that know what they are doing and are responsive).. these are definitely not your strong points in any way whatsoever..

Yeah no - my experience was malware infected servers, blacklisted IP's, constant downtime and support staff that didn't have a clue.

After moving my clients away we went from logging daily tickets to 1 ticket per month.

I respectfully disagree on the "proper" part.

Downtime happens to every hosting company. Most of the time it's out of our control but we do our best to keep uptime above 99% that is why we credit you for downtime if we don't reach that number.

We have 24/7 365 days support on hosting with server admins on standby 24/7 to attend to outages and a noc team monitoring the network 24/7

Agreed, and I speak from the standpoint as a former client.

We definitely dropped the ball a few times and I wished we never did and we still work to make sure we try our best that we don't do it again.

Malware-infected servers? I'm not sure where you see this but that is simply not true. Blacklisted IPs are a big issue. There are scammers with ALL hosting companies looking to exploit unsuspecting victims so blacklistings happen from time to time.

We have a uptime guarantee where we credit you if you get less than 99% uptime. It's in our terms.

Malware happens to websites that are compromised. In my experience it happens most often with WordPress sites.

The server is not the problem else the people behind the hacks would love to get root access to the server and cause much more damage than a compromised website or two.

Some nice VPS options here:

I like the above because I can do an annual payment (which I prefer to do) with a nice discount.

And as mentioned above, Absolute Hosting is also very good with many options and excellent pricing (but no annual payment option):

Thanks for the kind words regarding our VPS Server pricing.
We do offer our clients the ability to add credit to their account which can be used towards future invoices as well as automatic top up.
