The last month or two my 10meg uncapped ADSL line has been acting up strangely, peaking at 8 meg on speedtests to the MTN server (but 1.5-2 mbps to Vodacom datacenter). YouTube/Vimeo buffers eventually, matters not whether it's 144p, 240p or 1080p. For some short peaks it often seems fine but within minutes it's back to the stone age with speeds regularly down to 256 kbps. Radio streaming with no other traffic concurrently even stutters. For what it's worth, my usage is very low on my account.

Hours of cell phone time to the call center have resulted in the same pattern over and over:speak to a different person who stabilizes the line (and 10 meg or 4 meg made no difference really) and leaves it at that, seemingly ignoring the detail about the call which has to be painstakingly repeated with every call. Send detail with trace routes and what not with no response.

Telkom technician came and went. Promises from support representatives to return calls have come and gone just as well without any action (other than a delayed closing of calls on their desks). Today another representative (Sephiso Ndlamini) promises to call me back at an agreed time and to take the matter up with a developer (supposedly some senior technical person) and send me an email confirming such. It doesn't happen and when I call in and win the lottery by speaking to the same oke he plainly recons that the guy I spoke to earlier had left (later on he admitted to speaking to me earlier this afternoon)

I am afraid that Afrihost cannot seriously expect any goodwill when their customer representatives plainly lie and if technical detail over numerous calls and emails seems to loose its relevance every single time.

Yeah, I am loving my afrihost connection atm.

However, their support leaves a lot to be desired.

Everyone time I log a support ticket, I get a ctrl c + cntrl v response.

Think they just look at the heading and paste a response

"Slow international" = past AUP policy or blame telkom

I find Afrihost's telephonic support to be pretty decent, but the email support can be very frustrating. I've never encountered such a poor command of the English language and email formatting.

They are quick to help me on Twitter usually. @Afrihost
Business hours though.

There are some clear examples here of some truly horrible client service, and I'm really sorry that you had to experience, much worse at our hands. As a company, this is clearly no what we stand for. Our values of client service can't be achieved if we're not observing the basic premises of transparency and accountability. I'm sincerely sorry about this :(

Please drop me a PM. I'll personally make sure that this issue is dealt with by management, and that you are assisted with your technical issues by one of our most senior and experienced guys. I'll also make sure that we follow this through until you are satisfied with the outcome.

The reality of the call centre environment is that one needs to have certain predefined responses to assist in dealing with high volumes of tickets. Also, with a growing staff compliment, we want to do what we can to ensure that our clients get quality information. However, it does have it's drawbacks. There is no excuse for not dealing with each query in a personal and thorough manner. We're not here to reply to tickets, we're here to deliver Pure Internet Joy.

I'll take this up with management so that we can put more emphasis on our quality assurance to ensure that our staff, especially new guys, are making the effort to deliver the service that we promise :(
