Hi,

The last 3 days my ADSL connection performance has been really CRAP!!!

I have an Afrihost capped 25gb+25gb account, a 4096 Telkom line and a Netgear DG834Gv5 router.

My browsing experience is crap! I get a Max download speed of 75KB/s on my Astraweb account!

My Router stats are:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.5 db 28.0 db
Noise Margin 11.5 db 14 db

and sorry I'm not that technical to provide any further information.

I restarted my router several times with no improvement and at this stage I'm thinking of getting a 1GB account with Webafrica to test whether it might be Afrihost.

Any1 got the same experience or what else can I start checking?

Thank you!

I know but the thing is I never had the problem before. I always got 390-410kb/s downloads and now it's 45-75kb/s.

Just asked Telkom to do a port reset and it still didn't improve. O well on to a new test service provider tommorow and then a new test router.

Need to sort this out :(

Oh Snap!

I'm having the same problem. The difference is that I'm completely new to ADSL. We've always been with iburst. On tuesday this week we finally had our line activated, bought a modem and signed up for a 10gig Afrihost (unshaped). I have a 384kbps line but have not reached speeds above 50kbps. It consistently peaks at 40-47kbps. I can't even do a google search while streaming anything. I can't even update my pc without the risk of the updates failing. I'm searching the forum for some help and I'm glad I came across your post. I've contacted Telkom countless times, as well as Afrihost. Telkom actually seems like they're delivering and have provided good support. I've had my line reset, my port recreated, my exchange recreated etc 4 or 5 times now. Nothing has fixed it. Afrihost has even told me that these speeds are normal. I don't think that's right, is it?

I suspect you're getting your kilobits and kiloBytes mixed up and you're getting pretty much exactly what one can expect on a 384 line...

That's a pretty great 384k connection if you manage to stream a video.

you mean a 4 meg line doesn't give 4 megabytes per second?! *sarcastic gasp*
;)

editt:/
btw OP, if the 1gB test account doesn't show improvement; you might have to consider a lower sync profile

I'm also in Pretoria East, and my connection has also been shocking the last week

I've tried 3 different ISPs and my download speed is around 40kbps (yes, bits not bytes!) however strangely my upload speeds go up to 350kbps

I'm not capped, and all 3 ISP accounts are on different networks.

I've replaced cables on my ADSL router, reset etc. only option left (before complaining to Telkom) is replace my router.

Thank you for clearing that up. My ISP only gave me this information after a few days of troubleshooting. So it felt like they were just trying to stop me from sending them anymore emails lol. You're explanation makes sense as I'm not entirely sure what the difference between bits and bytes is. I use Linux and my system monitor measures data rates in KiB/s. I had explained all of this to Telkom and my ISP but niether of them gave me a good explanation. Looks like most of the people I spoke to don't know the difference between bits and bytes either, or they just didn't listen well enough. lol. Thanks again

I guess it is seeing that 384k is supposed to be super slow. I assumed that 384k was the same speed that one would get on a bad day with iburst, and thats why we switched to ADSL. I was even told that I could skype with this line but I don't see how that's possible. Like I said, I can't even do a search while streming video.
