Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Back to downloading at 15KB/s presumably for the rest of the day. This is actually a disgrace that Afrihost are charging me for a connection which should download at 110KB/s and just supplying me with 15KB/s. I know I will get the usual about how this is a shaped service and of course any attempt to complain to such as the Consumer Protection Act will be met with the "best effort" excuse. If this sort of thing was my best effort at anything then I would be extremely ashamed. As for the continued insistence that Afrihost have plenty of capacity for the number of customers they have this is plainly not true - if it were then they would not need to shape. I believe they have been caught with their pants down - they have oversold their capacity in the hope that not everyone would want to use it heavily at the same time and now that there is heavy use they can't cope. I am sure they will deny it but if it is not true why do they need to shape? They are insistent that there is not a technical problem with their network so why do they need to shape us so badly?

Shaping is happening due to an increased demand on our network.
A dedicated team has been setup to run through all the shaping rules on our end so we should see some shaping improvements really soon.

Home Uncapped accounts are subjected to shaping though, it needs to be done to keep our network running smoothly. Without shaping we wouldn't be able to offer realtime services on an unshaped level.

Isn't this all down to a freeze in IPC bandwidth for this month? I know a couple ISP's who order increases in IPC bandwidth every month, couldnt this month due to an IPC freeze by Telkom. However they increased their previous order for each region in anticipation of this.

We aren't running out of capacity though, so this won't have any feedback on us :)

OK, I will humbly confess that I had not bothered to check any other ISPs' threads until today... mostly because I'd rather not give any ISPs other than Afrihost my money. But, having done so, it seems that the complaints here are being echoed everywhere else as well. Which means, to my mind in any event, that we aren't dealing with an ISP-specific issue.

But then surely, surely a week should be ample time to recognise and begin addressing the issue?

Did someone unplug a submarine cable or 3 and just not tell anyone? :D

We have started addressing the issue though :)

here is my earlier post from Telkom..

Telkom may have had an issue with their capacity on Eassy, or their breakout onto Eassy - but the cable was never went down to our knowledge. I think a break in the cable would have been much more apparent and severe than what we've been seeing.

This is weird.

I get shaped like the rest of you but it doesn't bother me cause my downloads are not top priority so they just take whatever bandwidth they can get.

However unlike some of you are reporting I am seeing no latency issues and my pings are ideal for gaming with BF3 usually being around 30ms and most times 25ms.

I am tempted to say that when complaining about latency we should post up a tracert so we have proof that the onus is on AH and not Telkom. But if Eassy is down and the traffic that would normal go down it is being sent along Seacom or SAT 3 then it MIGHT explain the congestion we are seeing countrywide.

I know there are redundancies at the landing sites (I have actually visited the Eassy site in KZN) but an equipment failure is not completely out of the question, or am I wrong? WOuldn't it explain some issues SA users have been seeing?

Is it just me or are the two statements above completely contradictory?
We're shaping you because our network can't cope but we have plenty of capacity.

Keep in mind that there must necessarily be a compromise of total capacity available measured against unused after-hours capacity.

Nope :)
Just because shaping is being implemented and applied doesn't have a direct link to capacity. Remember that realtime services are run on an unshaped level all the time, across the board.
Shaping is also here to ensure make sure the overall experience across all of our accounts are good.

Hi Afriguy

Do you have any idea what is going to happen with the Telkom speed upgrades and price changes and how it is going to affect your product range?

I am currently on the 2 meg all inclusive deal and would like to know what it going to happen once the upgrades kick in?

Bwahahahah Telkom phoned me now. Afrihost logged a call with them for my slow line speeds. LOLLLLLLL

Do the AfriGuys ever talk to their support desk?

Nope :)

So if you have plenty of capacity why are you needing to shape?

Would we have been shaped to 1% Download / .005% P2P?? :)

Hey Mr Afriman, I just have to say thank you to you and your team! I got my router, plugged it in at home, didnt work from the get go but I phoned the help line and a few minutes later I was up and running... Got great speeds for the middle of the day as well... Attached a screenshot I took with my phone for everyone to see :)IMG_7085.jpg

Okay - I wasn't able to get onto the forums - but whatever just happened, I'm all good again!
