Because maybe he is in a different part of the country and shaping is applied based on where you are and your IPC connection.

I.E CT / Durb / JHB. All three can have different shaping profiles running.

Fair enough but Afriman has also said that the heaviest users get shaped the most so why am i getting shaped to such an extreme degree when I have not even touched on 3 gig...

Because even those heavier users have already been shaped and they still felt the need to apply shaping even down to you who have barely touched your account.

What people need to get here is that this system is purely dynamic. It read a certain amount of demand...applies a layer of shaping on the top tier users. Demand increases, it again adapts and then puts on another layers of shaping to second tier. Again demand goes up. It now shapes the top tier heavier, and applies shaping to everyone. Etc. Their system is clearly reading that demand is so high that ALL tiers of users need to be shaped to the max.

^the above in no way should serve as an exemplar of how Afrihost's system works. It is my own example to illustrate my point.

Because it isn't a permanent solution :(
Turbocharging can be done on an account to account basis, by the client if they need to unshape their account for the next hour.
But you say you have enough capacity for everyone to turbocharge at once:
There is enough capacity available for this. Again, shaping is in place to avoid congestion on the network and allow realtime services to be unshaped.
so just do it.
You guys are really starting to piss me off now with this round and round stuff - we have plenty of capacity but we can't turbocharge you all at once because we don't have capacity. I know you are only spouting the official line and I don't want to get personal but really - come on - at least treat us like adults.

I UNDERSTAND that! BUT the guy on his cheaper 1 meg account with more usage is not shaped at all... whereas I am shaped to **** on my more expensive 10 meg line with LESS usage.

I pay more than him for a faster line but im getting shaped to the point where my downloads (if i were downloading anything) would be slower than on his 1 meg line!!!!!

so what is the point of having the 10meg line? nothing! i could then just get a 1 meg... save myself a ton of money and get dstv or something... ARGH

We're sorry that the account isn't performing as you'd hope.
Our network is seeing a higher demand than what we'd like to see - so we need to implement more shaping on the Home Uncapped accounts. This only affects non-realtime services, so browsing, streaming, VoIP etc shouldn't be affected.

We're still working on a concrete solution to ease the shaping.

It's always a good idea to schedule your larger downloads for after hours, this is when the network is at it's quietest and your throughput speeds will generally be better as opposed to peak hour traffic.

Remember, Home Uncapped are the only products subjected to shaping.

I actually do not mind shaping during the day when I'm not at home (yes, other people may differ), but in the last 15 hours I could only download +-2.7GB.

Scheduling of downloads start from 0:00 for me, until 7:00 or 8:00 after which it goes into limited download speed. So currently that means that roughly 3GB took 15hours. That is 58.255KBps.

Which is a Shaping Policy of about 13% for downloads/P2P.

And remember. This IS mostly after hours, when the network is supposed to be quiet.

:)

The Turbocharge feature isn't there to eliminate issues such as this. While the capacity is there it's highly unlikely that every single Home Uncapped user will enable this at the same time.
If you are being shaped you can click the Turbocharge switch which will unshape your account for the next hour. Shaping should also ease after peak hours.

I'm really sorry that we're letting you and everyone else down here, I can promise you that we're doing our best to come to a solution here.

How long you been with Afrihost ? What was your usage like for the past month ? I struggle to understand how you are shaped to that extent and I am not?

Where abouts are you? I am in JHB north and started with AH yesterday.

I am in CT, started with them on friday... did like 24 gigs maybe over the weekend... nothing crazy... had to reset my port because yesterday I had no internet. And then last night right thru until today I've been shaped to **** (downloaded one 1.94 gig file since the start of the new month... well.. from last night and it wasnt finished when i left for work)

ON A 10MBPS LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The shaper looks at the overall usage, and then runs through accounts.
As I mentioned previously your realtime services shouldn't be affect by the shaping. If they are, please send me a PM so I can look at the account on my end.

I decided to go with a more premium account so that even if I am shaped I could still get a usable download speed but at 6.5% it puts me below 1 meg speeds... The last file i downloaded was at 28kbps last night and this morning!!

I know you are doing what you can and that there is just so much that you can do so I apologise for the negativity... I really hate giving negative feedback but I am extremely frustrated!

I've decided to move to a Business Uncapped account from Afrihost this week as I don't have time to deal with shaping, just a R100 more isn't much for full line speed all month.

Not funny!

So the strategy actually worked and I upgraded to 1Mbps Business account, but funny enough, p2p isn't a kb faster, it's actually slower. Downloading a rate of 5kbps now. SERIOUSLY?

What did I just pay for?!?

EDIT: SORTED! Was too impatient ;)

Try switching off your router for a while then reconnect. If that doesn't help then pm Afriguy/girl/man.
