Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Hi, guys, I'm looking for a new ISP, and just wanted to know how much data you guys pull on a 2Mbps account? I'm looking at about 200GB-250GB max per month.

Hey darkjak101 with afrihost it depends on which IPC you use (Cape town, Johannesburg, Durban). The majority of responses on afrihost are positive and they do nice discounts so its really worth trying regardless.

@ new_in_za2 what did support tell you was wrong ?

Last time I called Afrihost support was when I initially got my ADSL connection. It took about 15 phone calls to finally get hold of someone there who didn't just lie to me. Since then I haven't bothered calling their support and rely on Afriman to sort out issues. However, my internet connection has been human excrement pretty much non-stop since the MTN move, so every single Afrihost excuse since then applies to me I guess.

To rule out things you should grab a cheap 1 gig prepaid from someone and test (If you're with FNB you should have one available to you anyway), they are useful to have just in case a isp is having problem anyways. If you are wondering who to get one from then I would suggest webafrica or axxess.

That way you can say "If its my line then how come this account is fine" kind of thing.

When Afrihost went south last year, I bought a prepaid account with Plugg. It's been working just fine ever since.

Hi,

Had the best luck this weekend, at 13:20 (on Saturday 10/08/2013), some bright Telkom Tech was busy with the Telkom box outside out house, we lost ADSL and our phone line. He was adamant that we would have ADSL and telephone. I had to go out. Got back at 17h00, and I have no ADSL, and telephone is totally dead. Call Telkom, no joy, wait until Sunday, call again, no joy. All I got was a very unhelpful and rude person on the phone telling me there must be a fault and I must just wait until they decide what they will do about it.

I pay Afrihiost of the ADSL line, is there anything Afrihost can do about this. I did call support this morning, but they claim they can only escalate the issue in 48 hours?? I cannot wait this long!

If you pay Afrihost for the line then you shouldn't ever have to phone telkom, they do all the fault logging for you. I don't know if logging a fault through them is better than you logging it yourself or not (I would assume it should be but who knows). That's basically the plus of having your line through the ISP, no phoning telkom.

It has been mentioned infinitum that one should PM Afriman!

Hi, I have. I have even escalated the fault, but all the system says the line issue was reported on the 8th of August, and they cannot see any progress. But why the line was cut is madness. I had speed issues, but at least I had a connection and a telephone, now I have nothing.

THERE YOU GO now you can spam the Plugg boards, your complaint is old news behind the times, you are trying to make it look like it happened yesterday, you are a fraudster!

I have to wonder why you are still with Afrihost if this problem has been with you so long since we're over half way through the year. If I was having poor performance from one ISP (for an extended period or often) and good from another I'd be jumping ship as soon as possible and returning later if need be.

And if you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

Here's what Afrihost's great "unthrottled" browsing experience is like on a 4Mbps-but-recently-downgraded-to-2Mbps-because-why-pay-more-for-nothing:

So yes, I have to sit there and wait 27 seconds for this internet connection to load a simple image at 36.1kB/s, almost 1/8th of the speed being paid for.

I see you're battling with your downloads here. Not sure that I have all the information from you though. Are you being shaped on an Uncapped account, and are other services (real time) running at the speeds they should be?

I've got to say though that saying the network is the issue is not consistent with the majority of the current feedback, so we need to test thoroughly before we make conclusions. Pre-empting the troubleshooting process can waste LOTS of time by looking in the wrong place. We need to eliminate any local issues, regional issues before we start looking at the network.

Please drop me a PM and I'll get our team to contact you and get started on this.

With some other ISPs taking a bit of a dive recently perhaps it's time for me to briefly commend Afrihost for their recent quality of service. AfriMan, your move to MTN was initially disastrous for many, but you've pulled it back like champions. Haven't had a reason to post much in your feedback threads for months. Thanks for that.

Now, I just hope you're ready for the influx of 'abusers'... :erm:

I've been dreading a influx of 'abusers'. It's not from a performance point of view because things will be fine with the shaping system Afrihost has in place but rather the fact of when someone gets shaped to the max the system allows they will come to this forum and speak about how its not true uncapped, how Afrihost sucks etc...

I get the feeling that openweb's more likely to be flocked to having a bit more of a painting of a "Downloaders ISP" though.

EDIT:
If people think I'm crazy for supporting a ISP having a shaping system what would you prefer, 100% of the network receive degraded service or be shaped orrrrr a small percentage of the people causing the problem being "managed" so to speak.

That shaping system is the lifesaver of the normal to mid use users though.

It works, although thinking back Afrihost's switchover (ironically) from rolling thresholds to demand-based shaping hardly went smoothly. :D It is, to my mind, the most fair and logical practical system. Although there aren't any published thresholds it's enough to know that I will get my downloads as fast as the network, and my historic usage, allow at any given time. But someone at MWeb obviously doesn't agree...

Yeah the transparency of being able to see if its happening combined with the fact that it can lower at any point not having to wait x days is cool.

Sorry to hear this issue is still around (ad getting worse). Please drop me a PM, let me see if I can find out why this is not getting resolved :(

WOW if you have come over from the MWEB whinging corner on MyBB you may feel real depressed with the recent AUP Email going out to abusers. Enough to make Ronald Mac depressed.

So what is Afrihost offering (smoking) for someone who enjoys using the entirety of the service?

I have just about had enough with my MWEB premium uncapped 4mb line. :wtf:
