Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

OK can someone PLEASE help my figure this out.

Netflix is buffering every 20 seconds. So i check speedtest.net
My uncapped 4mbps gets about 100kB/s (18/8% shaping)
Turn on turbocharge and get about double that.

PURCHASE a capped account so I can see if a higher download speed is the solution.

Afrihost capped account gets about 50-90kB/s?!?!?!??!!?
WTF:mad::confused::(

EDIT:
Went back to uncapped and getting 100kB/s... "No Shaping Applied"
AH will swear that capped service is Never shaped/throttled. We all believe that? It seems that they are obliged to sometimes leach capacity from the 'unshaped' services so that things don't grind to a complete halt. Hopefully these problems will, in Afriman's words, "soon be over." Just hope that this promise is met soon. I have faith.

Was thinking about moving to the business uncapped but if a capped package performs like this then I'll hold off.
Best of all is I've been disconnect for almost 3 hours now. Tried all the AH accounts and not one of them connect :( FFS

Ive moved to a business uncapped account 2 days ago. I only peek at 60kb/s on my 1 meg line. I don't think it was worth the extra 100 bucks.

My AH capped account is full speed right now. iTunes updates, and whatever I throw at it.
Perhaps your ADSL line is a little buggered?

Hi AfriGuy

My connection has been running very slow for the last two days. Clientzone did not indicate any shaping. I then did a linecheck. Got the following results
Capture.jpg

Whats up?

Still struggling in waterfall this morning (I know this has nothing to do with my Afrihost account) but I see these stats in my router. Could this be the problem?

6mb line.

Downstream

SNR - 271
Attenuation DB - 160

Upstream

SNR - 208
Attenuation DB - 65

I think with those figures you should not even be connecting. Maybe the more clued up guys will respond. I think your line is faulty big time.

Perhaps the bridge collapse affected it or do the data lines run overhead? I'm on the Kloof exchange with no issues, friends of mine on Afrihost would have moaned too by now if it was affecting the upper highway area.

I think all of us ultimately goes through the New Germany exchange.

I'm in Crestholmes, connected to the Crestholmes Exchange(Next to Meercats) which is connected to the Forest hills exchange(At the Bridle/Link junction) which is connected to the New Germany exchange(Shepstone Road). I think the Kloof and Hillcrest exchanges connect to New Germany as well.

The line stats show exactly the same as every other day. It connects almost instantly when the router started up.
Just before the shaping kicks in everyday, things run so smoothly. On the computer i can even stream Netflix when I manually set it to a higher quality. When the shaping kicks in everything just dies.

The "real time" services that aren't supposed to be affected is severely affected.
Youtube is slow, Netflix is useless, gaming often takes a punch, browsing is slow.

At the moment "No shaping applied" and this.

I've asked before why my traceroutes show the following but never got an answer.
Same result to all websites, anytime of the day even when the line runs at 400+kB/s and everything runs the way it should.

Sounds like there is a throughput issue on your line. We run some extensive latency and throughput tests recently to make sure that we're getting decent performance and we're seeing good realtime throughput and latency in the last couple of days.

We'd need to do some more tests to see where the issue is and figure out a solution. Please drop me a PM so we can get started on troubleshooting :(

this is nonsense , at the moment the throughput on my line is about 1% , and has been for the past 7 days , wake up afrihost and tell us the date this will be fixed.

If throughput is that low on all services - I would say there is something more going on. We'll need to see how you are measuring this and what services are running concurrently that might affect throughput.

So far I've been getting excellent throughput on realtime services on my own tests on a reasonably less than perfect 10Mbps line :(

I seem to be having latency problems to gaming servers in Europe...specifically Wow, SC2 and some steam related games (This is on uncapped...capped is sitting low)

im usually sitting at 160ms but last few nights been pushing 300+

any reports of latency problems?

My latency monitoring to UK and US has been rock solid for the last 24-48 hours so I don't believe this is a general latency issue on the network.

What are traceroutes showing?

If it's a line issue, wouldn't it affect transfer rates at all time? Why only affect it when when there is shaping on the network? I get great results when there is no shaping. So just wondering.
Thx will send a pm

That your network's dropping the odd packet at the moment...

We definitely don't borrow capacity from unshaped services - that would essentially mean that contention is too high and we'd start seeing bad latency across the network. We ensure that real time services are not shaped (we don't throttle any DSL products) but if you are running multiple services simultaneously then there could be an effect due to contention on your own line and QoS applied.

Thanks for having faith though - we are nearly there :)
