Have now switched to 4Mbps Capped from 4Mbps Uncapped, must say the speeds are awesome, just have to control my download habit a bit better :)

Thanks afrihost, spoke to someone over the phone. They moved me to the 4Mb line and its freaking awesome :D

Well after reading a few posts. I see people have said they were upgraded from 1 meg to 2 meg already. Thought this was only going to happened in Feb for us 1 Meg users.

So I decided to check my phone number and see if I have been upgraded or not. This is what it tells me.

ADSL Availability

Service Available
Maximum speed available in your area 10 Mbps
Your Current Service speed 2 Mbps

Question is now. I have a 1 meg business bundle from afrihost for R397.

When is afrihost going to too put me on that 2 meg ? . Atm I get a full speed of 100Kbs on my 1 meg. But if I have the 2 meg line with the 1 meg business uncapped. Wont i get the full 1 meg speed of 128kb/s ?

ADSL.jpg

So I checked on Telkoms site and it looks like the 1Mbps lines in my area have been upgraded. Has Afrihost decided on anything yet concerning the upgrades? I don't want to call Telkom, get synced at 2Mbps and have to pay Afrihost the price of a 2Mbps package instead of the price of a 1Mbps package. Can you please give some info on this Afriman/guy when you read this.

Did Afrihost's DNS severs just change?
My modem now reports this:
Primary DNS Server: 168.210.2.2
Secondary DNS Server: 196.14.239.2

Just checked Telkom upgraded my line to a 10 from 4 Mbps. Checked this afternoon it was still on a 4!!

Yep Afrihost is doing a great job and it is pretty awesome to downgrade at full speed.

Was there a hint of sarcasm in there..? :)

Although I agree its like having a road perfectly suited for a Beemer that's runs from JHB to CT but your vehicle options are a 1.3 Corolla then never needs to fill up fuel and will make it to CT or a 320i Beemer that needs fuel every 500kms and will only take you until Bloem.

But if you learn to love Bloem, you're sorted! :)

Getting horrible speeds international and local

~150KBps max on 10Meg (No Shaping Applied?)

I thought we fixed this :(

I have also been upgraded to 2 Mb line. Why does one have to phone Telkom in advance to sync to 2 Mbps, surely this should be automatic?? I mean it says your current service is 2 Mbps so you should be able to sync to that without notifying Telkom when you upgrade your data account with Afrihost :)

@AfriMan: Unfortunately even now (23:00) I sit on 0.2Mbit speed (of my 1Mbit line) and my HTTP traffic goes slowly. Is there any issues with your cable? Or too much users? I don't remember even 1 day when my speed was 1Mbit a whole 24 hours. Seems you need DOUBLE bandwidth to not offend simple "uncapped" users with your shaping.
Is there any estimates how much and when you get new bandwidth?

PS
SA reported long time ago about successful installation of SeaCom cable, but how is our lifes changed? Not on even a cent - when I had 384Kbit line I got 10KBytes/s. Now I have (supposed to be) 1Mbit line and.... my speed is 10KBytes! That SeaCom means nothing? We sit in the same ass? Any progress? 21 century hello?

Seacom was revolutionary at the time -these days it's complemented by (among others) the EASSy and WACS submarine cables, in addition to the old SAT3. (As far as I know, Afrihost doesn't make use of Seacom). Seacom is only a small part of our international bandwidth provision - see here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ssong/8185528489/
The problem is not SA's international bandwidth capacity - there's enough of that. The problem seems to be with the local IPC's, where some ISP's just do not have enough capacity to accommodate demand.

PS: For interest sake, here's a projection of what the situation might look like in 2015: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3804/10854000664_67b2356b26_c.jpg

Aktor, thanks for explanation! I'm not a big tech in ISP (just have common knowledge), what is that IPC? I heard it's something what ISP have to pay for and that price for it regulated by Hellkom and kept on a crazy high level.

PS
In programming IPC=Inter Process Communication. :)

IPC = IP Connect. It's where Telkom's infrastructure connects to the ISP's infrastructure, and the traffic subsequently switches from Telkom to the ISP and moves further along the ISP's routes. In the case of Afrihost, it's basically where your ADSL connection finally reaches the MTN Business network, and then makes use of that from that point forward.
(Gross over-simplification, but that's more or less the gist of it)

My line has been working at full speed since last night - no issues.

You sure it's not a Telkom exchange issue. Have you tested any trial accounts from other ISPs to see if the issue is the same. May help you narrow down the problem.

Also have you checked the line status on your modem - sync speed, SNR, attenuation...

Hi guys,

I think I may have been bumped up to 2mbps on my dsl. What is the current uncapped price of 2mbps? also, have you released any news on any pricing adjustments?

Afri*, I was under the impression that cancellations can be done up until the 25th of the month. But this morning when I tried to cancel, I found "Billing has already commenced for this month, your line will
only be cancelled at end of next month 31-Dec-2013". I'm not happy  Can you possibly rectify? I'll PM you my details

Before the 25th, as far as I've always had it...
