Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Aktor, thanks for explanation! I'm not a big tech in ISP (just have common knowledge), what is that IPC? I heard it's something what ISP have to pay for and that price for it regulated by Hellkom and kept on a crazy high level.

PS
In programming IPC=Inter Process Communication. :)

IPC is IP Connect - it's like a network card (except it costs like a million rand or so) that allows traffic to breakout of Telkom's network onto our own.

Seacom was revolutionary at the time -these days it's complemented by (among others) the EASSy and WACS submarine cables, in addition to the old SAT3. (As far as I know, Afrihost doesn't make use of Seacom). Seacom is only a small part of our international bandwidth provision - see here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ssong/8185528489/
The problem is not SA's international bandwidth capacity - there's enough of that. The problem seems to be with the local IPC's, where some ISP's just do not have enough capacity to accommodate demand.

PS: For interest sake, here's a projection of what the situation might look like in 2015: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3804/10854000664_67b2356b26_c.jpg

We use EASSy on the East Coast and WACS on the West Coast. Most of our traffic is over WACS (CPT and JHB traffic) as we have an uncontended 10Gbps link as well as 10Gbps on EASSy for all East coast traffic (also JHB and DBN). We have literally no contention on our international traffic due to the capacity we've got :)

We're not changing our data prices - so we'll only be amending Uncapped bundle prices to reflect the line regrades. we'll be revisiting our pricing only once we've assessed the impact of upgrades on our client base :)

Does this mean that a R297 1 Meg Bundle will now be R297 2 Meg Bundle? Your wording (or, at least, my interpretation) implies that.

@AfriMan: Unfortunately even now (23:00) I sit on 0.2Mbit speed (of my 1Mbit line) and my HTTP traffic goes slowly. Is there any issues with your cable? Or too much users? I don't remember even 1 day when my speed was 1Mbit a whole 24 hours. Seems you need DOUBLE bandwidth to not offend simple "uncapped" users with your shaping.
Is there any estimates how much and when you get new bandwidth?

PS
SA reported long time ago about successful installation of SeaCom cable, but how is our lifes changed? Not on even a cent - when I had 384Kbit line I got 10KBytes/s. Now I have (supposed to be) 1Mbit line and.... my speed is 10KBytes! That SeaCom means nothing? We sit in the same ass? Any progress? 21 century hello?

I'm sorry that you're having such a frustrating experience. It sounds to me like there may be an issue on your line and you're capped at a specific speed due to distance or cables. Have you done any further troubleshooting with our support team or Telkom?

Getting horrible speeds international and local

~150KBps max on 10Meg (No Shaping Applied?)

I thought we fixed this :(

Edit: Tracerts are completely normal

Capped is running perfectly fine - full 1MBps downloads

Not sure what is happening here. The changes we made previously seem to be holding steadily :(

Not seeing this in general either today :(

No. It means that it would most likely cost you R50 more for the 2mb data.

Considering that the current gap between 2mb and 4mb bundle is R200 - R100 for line, R100 for data - getting a free bump would then mean you have to either pay in R100 for the faster data or downgrade line and save R100. OR do nothing and have say 2mb data on a 4mb line.

Hi Afri guy/man,

My shaping policy is currently listed as:
Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P

Please help me understand what this means? TNx

It means that you have 18.8% of your line open for downloads and 6.25% for torrent/nntp.

For example, if you have a 100KBps normal download speed - your max download speed for HTTP Downloads would be 18.8KBps and your max for torrents would be 6.25KBps

Thanks Zertop.

Do you know if this dynamic? i.e. is this my status currently and will change after hours?

Or am I bucketed in this category forever more...?

Thanks Zertop.

Shaping is lifted when the load on the network betters. So it's temporary. Most of the time shaping is completely lifted after hours.

Thanks Zertop.

Changes every second of every day. No seriously, its extremely dynamic - it gets applied to accounts according to the regions usage. For example, if Cape Town is using 98% (just an example) of its capacity, shaping will start being applied due to the demand. Same for JHB

I see most of the forumites answered this before I could get to it :)
Just to sum up though:

The percentages display the available line speed for those protocols. So in your case, 18.8% for downloads and 6.25% for P2P stuff. The shaping runs dynamically, according to our overall network usage at the time. So as soon as the network sees quieter patches (mostly after hours) the shaping will begin to ease.

Thanks for the responses.

What category does the news server fall into? P2P or downloads?

Afriman, what is the procedure if my line is still syncing at 2meg instead of the upgraded 4meg speed? Should I be calling you guys or Telkom?

My line is currently with Afrihost.

Afrihost support should be able to help. But remember, your data speed wont be increased, only your line speed
