Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Haha shaped again in Cape Town.

Seems like everyone trying to stream the memorial is causing some havoc.

Looks like we were shaping a little during the day - hardly much though. I know the Madiba event was streaming all over (was watching it on TV myself) so it could explain the extra bandwidth moved. But definitely no heavy shaping at all throughout the day in the Cape :)

Hi Afriman,
I was really excited tonight to have been upgraded to 2Mbps uncapped (line is with Afrihost, literally got the message in clientzone at 20:43) BUT I am very disappointed at my download speeds!! Maybe I am being a bit impatient, maybe something needs to be reset on your side/telkoms side. I don't know...

Point being my DL maxes out at ±0.65Mbps and UL at 0.2Mbps!! View attachment 87643 This speedtest was done 1 min ago.

Previously on 1Mbps uncapped my line maxed out 0.85Mbps, which although not terribly fast, was ok.

Please check if something is not right on your side or if I need to bother Telkom all day tomorrow to have my line fixed. Any help is appreciated! :)

Line stats:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 256 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.0 db 27.0 db
Noise Margin 14.5 db 7 db

Did you upgrade your data account to run at 2Mbps as well. Even on unshaped Business there is a product rate limit.

Drop me a PM and we'll check all the variables like your line sync, etc.

What is the throttling threshold for the 4mb uncapped bundled account? And overall what is everyone's experience thus far?

We don't throttle or use set thresholds on any of our Uncapped products - this was something we used to do before we changed over to our new network.

We shape according to demand - so that our clients always have the best speeds our network can offer all the time, rather having to wait for shaping or throttling to be removed, or being punished when they've had to use extra data.

We only shape non-realtime services when there is high demand, but we never ever touch your realtime browsing, gaming, streaming or priority VoIP/Terminal services :)

My Youtube download speeds have been utterly dismal lately, on my 1 Mb line with Afrihost Uncapped with no other download activity during the Youtube tests.

For every 10 seconds of 240p video play, another 10 seconds are spent buffering. Completely useless and frustrating.
It didn't used to be like this, what happened to you, Afrihost?

I am being shapped 75% download and 75% P2P. at 2:30 am, What kind of shapping is this. And sometimes the system doesn't work even after applying Turbo Boost. There must also be a lot of bugs, like on the first I had complained on facebook about my account displaying capped after unpausing it, the Afriman that answered me said that my account was not showing capped. Instead of admitting the problem with the system, he went on and fixed it, then told me that it wasn't the case. After few days, some people complained about the same thing.

I don't think I would ever lie about an issue - maybe I didn't clearly explain the issue on our side. Are you talking about Mobile or DSL data here, though?

I think I've been pretty straightforward with MyBB when it comes to general problems - but with any software managing the amount of transactions we do daily, there will be small issues in a set of specific circumstances. Even then, I usually do give an explanation of what was behind the issue - especially if we did something wrong or badly on our side :(

Sorry to hear that. Were you having any throughput issues on your line at the time?

Drop me a PM so I can test those links as well to see if they're also giving issues on our side :(

Ok so besides my terrible internet that I have been complaining about for weeks with no resolve, this morning my internet was just plain dead... As in NO access at all... Called the call centre, they ran a few tests and had to log a fault.

I still have not heard back from sydney in the critical care department at afrihost after my emails to him on monday even though I clearly asked him a question.

Service has been shocking from Afrihost I must say.

In fact, when I told sydney I need my line fixed before Telkom closes he suggested migrating the line backt o telkom so that i can handle it. I am very sorry but I am paying Afrihost for a service, that includes sorting this out. I don't want my money back, I dont want to be a hassle and complaining constantly, what I want is the "service" I pay for but have not been getting for weeks! :(

Oh, and enough of the "we are sorry for letting you down" response. It's lame and I am sure that you all read it from a script. Stop apologising and actually just deliver the service you get paid for!

Upgraded my account to 4MB after my telkom upgraded my line. Problem is its hardly any faster.

Browsing is about the same and NNTP hovers around 260kBs average vs. 200kBs before. Hardly seems worth it considering Afhost's (non-bundled) account is now one of the most expensive.

Also curious about the experience of others who upgraded, especially in regards to NNTP.

Have you checked if your line is syncing at a full 4Mbps? Let's check your sync first to see if you're actually getting the full throughput on your line.

Also, remember that data upgrades can take up to 24 hours to take effect - so your data might still be registering as 2Mbps until the upgrade changes your rate limit policy.

Hi,

Has afrihost sent out mail around choice to go 4mbps or 10mbps packages? If not, best way to change is in clientzone as my line doesnt sync to 10mbps and I've paid Afrihost for Dec already for this which is wasting my money.

thanks
D

Hi Afriman

Yes I'm syncing at 4mb and my NNTP downloads are definitely faster than the line max for 2MB. It may well be my NNTP provider instead so I'll experiment with making my backup account non-backup tonight (thereby connecting to 3 providers at once) to see the result. Not expecting 400kBs but 350 or so would be nice (I only download between 11pm and 5:30am).

As for browsing it could just be that 2Mb is enough and 4Mb just does not make that much of a noticeable difference. I'm pretty happy with browsing performance anyway.

Speedtest / Tracert / Snr / Attenuation all fine so don't think its my line.

I can see this has been a frustrating experience for you, and I think we have tried on our side to resolve this for you. The issue seems be clearly with your line and we're limited by Telkom in what we are able to do without their intervention.

I think the suggestion of moving to Telkom is not so much a rebuff, as a suggestion to get the quickest result that will work for you. At the end of the day our priority is to get you the result you want as quickly as possible - if it is indeed possible. I don't think there was any malice intended.

I think you should drop me a PM so we can discuss a way forward for you. Will appreciate if you do so.

That was definitely a poor response from the consultant concerned and I will definitely ensure that we find out exactly what happened there.

I would also appreciate if you would also black out the consultants name if you post stuff like this. Sometimes people make mistakes, there could have been a technical error. I'd prefer that we don't develop a shaming culture here on MyBB. We can always share specifics by PM in cases like this.

Would really appreciate if you would do so :)

So apparently there's a Telkom tech at my house, too bad since I'm not. How do they plan to test slow connectivity inside the house?

Sorry, was not trying to shame. He atleast helped me after I got him on track :)

After inspection of the transcript, it would seem I joined in an already in progress chat. "change dsl to afrihost" was the topic of that chat. I have the entire chat of the previous person here.

Unfortunately we couldn't pre-empt the upgrades so we had to wait for Telkom to alert us to the changes. I most cases the choice to downgrade should mean that you had a faster line for a portion of month.

But drop me a PM and let's look at the specifics :(

The technicians are supposed to call before they arrive - but they don't always do that. But they not allowed to close the fault if they don't get your confirmation so make you SMS and say the fault is not resolved :(

Fault should still be open, guy phoned me and I told him to come back tomorrow morning.

You should see some difference - but since you're sending tiny packet requests, the response would generally be in the same time as a higher speed cos you're not reaching capacity at any point. Downloads would definitely be a stronger indicator - but use tools like BitMeter OS to check where your throughput is peaking and averaging.
