We shape torrents to a fairly heavy degree before we touch HTTP downloads and we treat them differently even on the most aggressive policy. The idea is that even with shaping applied you can still get a good experience, still get your downloads (even much slower than usual) and have awesome internet at all times (and hopefully awesome-er most of the time).

Don't toucme me on my gaming servers:mad:...but you do!

The ISP's that would get a fast gaming link unhindered to the Sony PSN online gaming servers will have me as a loyal client forever. ;)

I think that would be the same for many especially now that the PS4 will be released soon. Does not know if the same goes for the Microsoft servers.

Gaming is a priority for us, but it also depends on where the servers are and the conditions that can effect connectivity. To my knowledge most of Playstation's servers are in the EU and Japan, while Microsofts XBL servers are in the UK & US. Not sure if any of them have official local servers - perhaps some forumites may know more.

But gaming is our highest network priority as it (more than anything else) needs stable and low latencies to be awesome :)

@afriman, I am getting huge latency spikes on my business accounts

Ping to 8.8.8.8 @ 1100ms
normally @ 220ms

My ping while in a game of League of Legends is abnormally high. Ping is usually ~170ms, but was ~360ms in game now.

As you can see - the issues are only at the end of the connection. This indicated that the issue is currently with their servers.

Afrihost is running out of steam. Speeds have been terrible since the beginning of last week. Currently - Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P

@ afrihost, is it cheaper for afrihost if I download my stuff locally through newshost or does it not make a difference?

Just a random question that popped into my head.

My line syncs at 6mbps and shaping policy says 18.8%... so am I wrong to assume I should at least get some kind of USABLE speed?
18.8% should still be sufficient to do something but in the year 2013 I'm stuck right now at +-13kB/s and over 100ms ping.... :(
Had to use turbocharge just to post here.
I'm fine with shaping but dayum, this is on the verge of not having internet at all.

Even with turbo charge i had to quit playing BF3. Just unplayable :(

Currently getting 25kB/s speeds on a 2mb line :( and speed fluctuates constantly. Even steam downloads.

I am an new client that started to test the account they have an if you are not happy then they will pay you 2 months money back with this 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P shaping every night the past week i think they going to pay me that money... and it 21:45 already

I am also a new client, ex Mweb refugee, and sadly within the first 2 weeks i am also shaped to 18.8% Download/6.25% P2P. Sucks big ones, but i can guarantee ya that if you were with any other isp it would be far worse.

If you were with mweb, simply having your router on and sending one packet will get you choked to pre-dial up speeds.

Jinne...things run well and everyone is happy as a clam.

As soon as things get rough and they actually have to use their AUP which is spelled out clearly people start throwing hissy fits.

I get no one likes beinf shaped...but it's downloads. I can still stream in hd dispite shaping...show me any other ISP that would allow this?

Just relax and bear with the slow dls a little bit longer.

Shaping on downloads and p2p (30%) but YouTube and browsing still going at max line speed. Can't complain

If look at it a bit more closely I think you'll find it's a little more complicated than that...

I'm simply trying to understand the details of the current situation. Given my usage (82-odd gigs on a 4mb line so far this month, of which probably 90% is streaming), I would expect fairly moderate shaping if any. Yet yesterday I see ClientZone reflecting 18.8% speed on downloads and 6.25% on P2P, all the while with JINX's stats showing fairly standard weekday patterns. I've no problem with the measures needed to maintain a usable connection with last week's high usage, but seeing such conditions on my connection yesterday just doesn't make sense to me.

Perhaps Afrihost's dynamic shaping isn't as dynamic, or fair... or intelligent, as I thought it is.

Can someone please help me understand what the F*** is going on...
Yesterday this time around i was syncing at 6+mbps with around 7-8db SNR... things were going well until last night when I went down to 13kB/s and everything just died out. couldn't do anything at all.
This morning it went down to about 1.2kB/s with no shaping?!
Restart everything again and now all of a sudden I'm syncing at 3.5mbps down, 0.47mbps up with below 5db SNR

When I try the "Test My Line" feature on the clientzone, under the DSLAM results it says
Max Sync Rate 640kbps
Current Downstream Sync 480kbps

Under Router Results
Max Sync Rate 7008kbps
Current Downstream Sync 3520kbps

I have a feeling it's Telkom related

shaping removed from about midnight last night. Yay.

Well it didn't last long. I'm shaped to 50% Download/ 50% P2P. It still pretty good though.

@AfriMan,

Do you guys have an FTP server or something that we can use to test true download speeds?
I don't trust speedtest.net ....
