Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

The shaping normally doesn't effect me but for the past 48 hours.
My afrihost account seems to be battling with all downloads especially torrents.

There must be an issue somewhere -_-

R897 PM (incl. VAT) for 4Mbit Uncapped Business with no shaping eh.

Tempting, but I feel a little bitter bout AH at the moment to be quite honest.

on ALL protocols?

Still, it's after 5pm, I want to get some stuff done.. but alas, 88kb/s
18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P

So to get unshaped HTTP downloads I'd have to fork out about double for unshaped HTTP downloads.

The accounts are unshaped across the board, yes.
It's not an ideal solution - our team are doing their best to implement a fix to ease the shaping.

24/7 Unshaped?

And if I go ahead, what do I pay if I were to initiate the line port and so on tomorrow? Could you explain what the payments/pro rata and so on would be?

Sorry if I missed it but this thread is long :wtf:

Is Youtube services shaped/throttled?

TIA

The Business Uncapped and our Capped accounts are unshaped 24/7 :)
OK. Let me throw something into the mix. I have been a loyal AH capped account holder for a few years now and up to last year (before the big switch) things worked virtually flawlessly and I was very happy. Earlier this year I switched from my capped account to uncapped (I misread the announcement in My BB that AH were unshaping all their uncapped accounts) and after the first week when they re-introduced shaping and despite having done minimal downloading was suddenly seeing pathetic speeds. I then returned to my 15Gb capped account but also noticed a lot of latency at certain times. This past month having seen Afriman/guy repeatedly say that capped accounts are not shaped (I prefer the real definition - Throttled) I changed to the 50Gb capped at the bargain price of R199 pm. I initially found that I could stream movies, you tube etc. fairly easily but no way above SD or 360p but I was just happy to have mostly un-buffered stuff. Last week this changed dramatically and nothing would stream. (I had only used just over half of my allocation). Seeing the strain that AH was under I kept quiet hoping things would get better and lo and behold this morning everything streaming beautifully. However at about 13.30 everything again ground to a halt and impossible to stream anything. (I am on a 6Mbs line). I could rant on and on but to what point? I am sure that I will just, again, be asked to do trace routes, speedtests etc. and nothing will be resolved. Telkom will get the blame but that won't fly as a techie there has assured me that my exchange is, even at peak times, running at way below capacity. My feeling remains that AH have fallen into the familiar trap of taking on more clients than their capacity can handle and are now scrambling with all their 'smoke and mirrors' doublespeak to put out the fires that this has lit. I will keep my various accounts with AH for the time being but patience is wearing very thin.

Is Youtube services shaped/throttled?

I've used Openweb (IS, Vodacom Business); MWEB Home Uncapped Premium and now Afrihost Home Uncapped and I've never found Youtube particularly reliable, it's a complete hit/miss. YMMV.

Youtube is not shaped at all.

And I just checked that. Grabbed an 11mb file...on a 4mb account at a whopping 35kB/s...that was painful I tell you. However I tabbed into a HD youtube stream and sure as nuts my throuput hit 300kB+ and it played without issues.

Yes.
You'd be paying for the following:
Pro-rata on the 4mb line and the business account (price/31*(31-dayofmonth))
The line migration would however take a few days and you'll only be charged pro-rata from the day that the migration is marked as finished.

Thanks AfriFroot :D

So it makes sense to switch over at the end of the month then, yes?

Well, 50/25 from the 18.8/6.5 of earlier, so that's a definite improvement from last night when the first change in shaping came at 22:30.

Let's hope the trend continues.

:D

You can switch anytime, thanks to the pro-rata payment. Oh, and Telkom will reimburse you the pro-rata payment from their side, since you're now essentially double-paying the adsl line.

Oh, and since you have an uncapped account at present, you can upgrade to a more expensive account at pro-rata and price difference combined.
(ie today, 397 -> 697 = R300 extra, and the pro-rata is applied on the R100).
Obviously the amount will be different due to the bundle-discounts.

Youtube has been working perfectly inspite of all the shaping.

Signed with Afrihost from this month(4Mbs uncapped home...). Never even update the DNS yet. Started reading this thread and thinking...oh ****.

I just want to be able to watch League of Legends World Finals on Saturday LIVE on Youtube.

If you upgrade tonight it'll take affect a few minutes after upgrading, it will also be pro-rata billed.
Drop me a PM if you have anymore questions :)

Remember realtime services (streaming included) aren't affected even when you're shaped.

Lucky you, i'm still stuck here..

Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P

I am feeling like going onto the business account for R100 more, but then I just think of how *** this whole situation is and do not really want to spend more money on AfriHost..
