Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

On a trial 2mb account, I am using a quarter of my line speed for an HTTP download while having flawless streaming at the same time. Wouldn't dare try that on my afrihost account

Hi All

I really need some advise on this. I'm getting my Telkom voice line installed on Thursday and was going for the AH R279 1mb package. Given the horror stories on this thread I don't know anymore.....

I'm guessing the obvious choice given these circumstances would be to go for a business package.

Looking at that I need a bundled Data + uncapped Data deal, which would be the better option?

MWEB business? or Afrihost business

Can someone please advise me on the Price differences and QOS differences?

Thanks

I've been shaped almost the entire day today, it's been stuck at 25/12.5 - that is absolutely dire in my book - if Afrihost can't sort this out then they need to amend their AUP to state that the home uncapped product is not designed in the least for Non RT service usage!

Will give them about 3 weeks before I start looking at getting my money back and moving! Sad really :(

Maybe ask the guys in the Afrihost business uncapped thread?

Personally I'd still choose AH over Mweb.

You mad, mweb business is waay more expensive than afrihost business and mweb business is definitely inferior.

I've been with AH 2Mbps standard uncapped for just over 2 weeks now and what started off great has just gone downhill. Was hoping to watch some live football tonight but speeds are shocking. Standard http download for plugin was running at 4KB so I tried torrenting the install (56MB). With 300 seeds got the same 4KB download speed. Tried flash streaming 175kbps and it was unwatchable. Even web browsing has been dog slow. Switched to MWEB (downgraded to 1GB) and speeds were fine so it's not my line. I've now been holding on for support for 36 minutes and counting.

I hope that this is just a minor hiccup cos I moved to AH based on the positive feedback on myBB. btw Speedtest shows 50ms ping and 1.5Mbps download. Based on my current experience I will never trust speedtest again :(

Still shaped to 12kb/s on my 4mb line. That means 24 hours of shaping. Wow used to get full speed at night but thats gone now

If this carries on then I have no choice to leave. 24 hours of being shaped is a joke

Went to bed last night with 25% shaping and woke up this morning and still being shaped. Left a 750 Mb file downloading (yes AH, just like you recommend to avoid shaping) and it is still running now with 2 hours to go so guess there has been no unshaped last night at all. So, if I can't download during the day and I can't download at night when can I download? And if I can't download at all why am I paying you R197? I know you will hide behind AUP but I want my money back - I refuse to pay for something I am not getting.

Yeah i give up on trying to download anything 23kb/s get me no where this shaping is hectic
HTTP 23kb/s
Torrent 11 / 7kb/s
News Server 0kb
:(

Yeah something is wrong, my 4mb line downloaded like a gig over night -_- network has been dodgy the last 2-3 days in terms of downloading, speed tests are fine and so is browsing

This doesn't feel like shaping, i normally get decent speeds when the network is shaped...

I will also not go to mweb, mostly out of principle. A worrying thing for me @ afrihost is the patterns the last 3 weeks on their uncapped, it feels like they are forcing uncapped users over to their business acc. How long before we see problems there?

Afriman/guy, are the business dsl accounts shaped in any way? At a certain time during the day? Does shaping get invoked on the business accounts after a certain amount of traffic has been done? Or are the business accounts shape free regardless ot time and traffic etc?

As I see it I now have these options:
Stay as I am and have effectively no internet for the rest of the month despite paying for it.
Pay Afrihost another R100 and change to a business uncapped acct.
Pay another isp around R200 for an uncapped acct:cry:
Use my free 1 Gb capped AH acct and buy top-up for it even although I have an uncapped acct sitting idle.

There are no words anymore to tell AH what I think of them (or at least none I can use here).
Incidentally, notice how you can go to the client zone and change to a business uncapped acct straight away but to go back to a capped account you need to wait till next month.

And now the clientzone is untrusted. mmm

Received in clientzone support:

There is currently a high demand of resources on the network, hence the shaping. Please do note that the shaping does not depend on your data usage but on the network traffic. We will only shape the peer to peer connection, do let us know if your normal browsing and real time connections are affected.

Perhaps Afrihost should update their Network Status to reflect that their resources/infrastructure is under strain? What has caused this seemingly sudden increase in demand?

I don't think they will update the status as they say the network is fine. See this reply yesteray.

There is an issue with higher network demand. In times of higher network demand Home Uncapped accounts are subjected to shaping which is what's happening - our network is fine.

What we need to figure out here is where the traffic is coming from, pin point it and deal with it from there to ease the shaping.
