Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Perhaps Afrihost should update their Network Status to reflect that their resources/infrastructure is under strain? What has caused this seemingly sudden increase in demand?

+100

From what I have seen on here so far for the last 3 weeks it seems that all the services I want uncapped for gets shaped heavily.
Why would I otherwise need Uncapped for. I use my uncapped for Torrents, Http Downloads and TV streaming like HULU and Netflix and of course youtube. Do you really need uncapped if cant use any of these?

That is the question on everyone's lips...

What the heck changed. Seems the problem is all over. Open have their fair share of issues. The only ISP so far NOT to report these problems are TI. Which lends credit to the whole peering problem causing this. However it has been stated that peering is not responsible.

i have just switched to uncapped 10mb with afrihost.

my speedtest.net speeds over the past two days have been pretty constant regardless of time of day:
* 6.97 - 6.99mb/s down
* 0.51 - 0.54mb/s up

is this the best i can expect? how do a troubleshoot the source of the slow speed?

edit: fixed the up speeds

It's difficult to say whether we should or not. We know that the situation is NOT ideal, but at the same time the network is doing it's job and managing demand for the best experience and we believe that is working.

We use the network status to alert clients when there is a major outage or the like. I don't think it's appropriate in this case, and it would not really serve to provide any further information to what is already provided in ClientZone or our AUP :(

Was wondering whether I should not research going to isp in Us or Uk, know one might have some problems with support. Somebody gave this a try by chance.

:(
It seems there wont be much improvement on the network in the way that we as customers of uncapped want so you might as well forget about a good uncapped experience from now on.

It depends on what speed you're line is syncing at and whether there is any congestion at your exchange. I'd need to take a closer look so please drop me a PM :(

I understand your situation Afriman.

The problem being is that the current state of the product - irrespective of how you look at it - is that is only good for watching youtube and browsing.

You cannot download and you cannot torrent. Let's forget about the torrents for a second...what about game downloads via GoG / Origin / Steam? Those basic things which you'd like to be able to download with an uncapped product irrespective of the time of day.

I don't envy your position having to deal with all these queries and backlash...however you cannot blame the people.

Will stand strong for a good while longer in hopes of this problem resolving.

Exactly. And if I needed that I could have gone with FNB uncapped with my 40% discound which would have cost me half for double the speed. Also @ Afriguy who do I drop a PM to fix the screwup somebody made on my account, I was only billed for a 2Mb Uncapped account and not the bundle......seriously.:wtf:

I have tried to take the plunge and go Business. But I cannot even do that on the ClientZone. I keep on getting an error. Sent a pm to AfriGuy. No reply as yet....

Just remember that Telkom don't need IPC. From your exchange you're straight on there network. And you don't have to break out in Cape Town in you're in PE, you're already on their network and route by the shortest available path.

I don't know all of the details with regard to this peering issue, but we have not been notified by MTN that there is any such issue affecting connectivity and would not account for the high usage which we're seeing. As much as I'd love to shift some blame, honestly don't think it's related :(

I'm honestly somewhat bemused that something like this can take so much time to identify, if not outright solve. I know it's easy to level criticism from outside, but damn man, in terms of end-user experience it's as if someone flipped a switch on iOS7-day. :(

That's it, we are totally screwed, IOS 7.02 just been released.

Only a 28MB update directly from your phone via Wifi... that's what I've done.
Stupid that Apple can't release the incremental update via iTunes.

Third straight day being shaped like this... to say that I am unhappy is an understatement... I downloaded ONE movie since the start of the month! That being under 2 gig. I understand that they apply shaping based on the subscriber communities overall usage but I am being shaped VERY aggressively.

If I am going to be shaped like this for the rest of the month I will be forced to downgrade my line speed (which I REALLY don't want to do) and then use a business account. The other option at the moment is to move to another ISP. I am not too keen on the second option as this problem seems to be universal through all ISP's.

I am stumped. Spent R995 on a nice router, R897 on the uncapped 10mbps bundle and am being shaped to such an extreme that my downloads are more than half as slow as the cheap capped 2 mbps product that our apartment block provides.

I know I have voiced my opinion here and probably seem like a tool but I am unhappy as I spent quite a bit of money on what I believed was a premium service with supposedly great customer service! I took months on these forums just browsing and reading peoples experiences and was happy with my choice. But then this **** storm started and I have had a HORRIBLE experience for 90% of the time that I have had my product up and running!

I am sure that it is not Afrihosts fault and that they are trying to find the solution but the time it is taking is really starting to anger me even more.

I chose to get a supposedly fast uncapped product so that I could download the shows I enjoy watching instead of getting a nice big DSTV package. I can't stream to my tv unfortunately, so that is out. At the moment I can't do what I intended on doing and the high end users Afrihost seem to brag about on their website actually seems like a bit of a lie used as a marketing tool.

I don't know what to do... I feel like I have WASTED my money.

Believe me, it's more puzzling from our side. The upsurge does no correspond to uptake in signups or any trend we can identify. As far as we can see traffic is "normal" - there is just so much more of it. iOS 7 may have just been the tipping point, or maybe it was just a coincidence, we just really don't know what happened.

We saw something similar happen in Cape Town on our previous network, but it seemed mostly localised to the Cape Area. We're seeing a huge deviance from usage that we carefully track and monitor. From what I can see, we're not the only ISP wondering what just happened, but we're obviously looking at every possible solution.

Still no reply to me upgrading to business. Guess they do not need my money anymore..

The Afrihost consultant told me in email that they only dont shape business dsl from 8-5, after that if you have used too much bandwidth they will shape you on the business account as well. I have this in black and white from Afrihost.
