Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Well something is buggered up. My netgear is freezing whilst trying to connect, then asking again for username and password for router admin . Is it fried, or is it the landline or afrihost?

We're not generally seeing authentication issues today. It could be the router or a Telkom issue in your area. I've seen a few people in the Hout Bay area reporting symptoms like this :(

I am fkn done with you guys!! DONE!!!

I do not care who's ****ing fault it is anymore!! Fix this **** of yours man!! I am so fkn close to pushing that cancel button!!

That is not originating in our network, as others have correctly posted. The second hop is at the "gateway" to the MTN network and not on the network itself :(

15:38 on a Saturday afternoon. 50% Download/ 50% P2P

Absolutely Pathetic.

Luckily I'm not downloading.

We're not shaping as much as we have, but unfortunately we're still shaping more than we'd like to preserve real time priority experience. It seems we're slowly winning the battle, please bear with us :)

Victimisation!

We're seeing much lighter usage on the network, but there is some shaping at present. Again, the total you use is not as important as the usage pattern. We try to identify those using bandwidth over short periods of time to identify which users to shape to have the biggest effect by shaping the least amount of users.

My connection's been shaped the entire day, the first time that's been the case on a Saturday since this little fiasco started. That doesn't strike me as an improving situation.

I am very disappointed with afrihost. Been hell the last 2 months.
Now I can't even connect...

We're not seeing general issues like this, except for some areas where there have been Telkom issues during the day.

Can you DM me so I can check your line and exchange on Telkom's notice board?

Afrihost it seems like a lot of people are having a problems with streaming. When they switch to a different ISP account then the problems disappears. That means there's definitely a problem with the Afrihost Network. To those who are having problems steaming, try installing Internet Download Manager then installing the browser extensions. After that go to your YouTube video and press the download button at the top right of the download screen. This should speed up your videos. But it's strange, I don't ever have problems with YouTube on my 2mb uncapped.

We don't shape real time traffic, but if you are trying to max out downloads, it could potentially have an effect on your streaming. Our QoS can only do so much to optimise your experience.

I would recommend pausing downloads and torrents while you stream for the best results :(

Afrihost bought Axxess (AFAIK) - can't imagine Axxess' QOS is any better. Does anyone know if life is better over at Axxess-land?

Axxess use their own management policies and quality of service settings. We run completely independent of them, though we share the same network so their shaping is completely independent of ours :)

gaming traffic is given highest network priority. Unless this is using a P2P signature, we won't touch gaming traffic ever.

yes i know, you guys say that on a daily basis :) my question is, can someone confirm if guild wars 2 traffic is being detected and prioritized as gaming ?

Axxess traceroute on their free 3GB trial package, which seems similair to the AH traceroutes I've posted.

So what gives Afriman? Where is the issue?
Something on MTN, or your network?
IP Connect capacity? "attack" again (inside or outside of your network)?

Come-on, PLEASE.... You are Afrihost, not Denny Mushrooms!

Hey Guys

I know that shaping still feels unfairly harsh for many of you, and it's been going on for a while now. Please be assured that we are equally unhappy about the shaping policies and we wouldn't enforce them if we had any other choice. With the increase in usage we've seen, this is the only short term solution to ensure that our clients can still have a good experience while we try to figure this out.

I can promise you that our Directors, Management and partners at MTN are not holding back in any way. We're mobilising all our resources to try and make every possible option available to make improvements on the network. Some solutions are only going to be available in the long term, and unfortunately we don't have any control over that. But we will continue to do everything we can in the short term to provide the best possible experience and push our capacity to the absolute maximum for the best throughput and least amount of shaping. Our team are manually overseeing the network at all hours, to make sure that we seize every opportunity to give more capacity back to Uncapped users.

Can you drop me a PM with some more info? I'm pretty confident that we don't shape Guild Wars traffic as long as you are gaming directly on the server and not using P2P gaming. If you are, I can check whether the P2P gaming client is listed as a shaped service.

Well I have no real complaints at the moment. Just download 7.0.2 iOS with in 45mins (~1gb) while watching youtube. I have decided up and till this is sorted out to queue my downloads for after 10pm till when I wake up the next morning and since friday they have been coming down at acceptable speeds.

For now I am staying.

Latencies are pretty solid from our monitoring, so not sure where this issue is.

Please drop me a PM and lets run some test on this :(

Tomorrow morning worries me. I watch F1 via P2P streaming; I might need to set fire to something if that doesn't work...

That's really awesome. And we think it's a great move to schedule downloads. If we all make a small adjustment, we can get the best of the network and a great experience until we get a long term solution in place :)

Getting worried here. I see another Mweb "solution" in the making! aka "don't upgrade the network, rather downgrade the customers with a downgraded service!"
