Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

The shaping policy might be working fine for people who want to watch youtube all day, but for me it is not working. Today I have been streaming whatever youtube movie I can. In doing so I almost used up as much data (about 17/18 Gb sofar) as I did last month and the months before in less as a day, but last month when i needed a 500mb file I couldn't download it due to extreme shaping unless you switch on turbo.

There are conflicting stories as well from afrihost side telling there is blanket shaping which is not based on your usage, but telling us as well it is based on your usage. Either way your formula's dont work. I have seen people used up far more being shaped less as I was at about the same time. The only thing I of course don't if they might have been on a different IPC

Do you propose to know what my reasons are for not particularly wanting to support any other ISP? Are you saying you can categorically state that, my perspective and opinions considered, sticking with Afrihost is not actually precisely an act of voting with my wallet?

I will complain over **** service, and I will commend good service. You can keep flopping from one provider to the next on a whim if you so choose.
No I'm not saying stating anything categorically. I'm saying your whining is irritating to those of us who would like to follow this thread to know of any progress on the Afrihost issues

Couldn't figure out why I had huge packet loss this morning on my uncapped account, but on my backup capped account everything was peachy. No mention of an outage in the Southern areas.

Then I noticed this in my clientzone:

There is differentiation, both regionally and individually (although, I suspect, not quite down to individual level but sorting users into tiers). However, when demand outstrips supply as much as it has, everyone suffers more equally and more heavily regardless of current and historical usage.

I must also confess that the 2 or three downloads I had to grab earlier did indeed roughly adhere to the 18.8% I have available at present. All things considered, that's not too bad; grabbing a quick driver at 100kB/s is still a hell of an improvement on the 3 - 5kB/s that now-infamous Nvidia driver saw late September...

I guess the problem came in when I uncancelled the account on the 30th, so the billing cycle was missed..
Any help would be appreciated :D

Shaping is applied when demand increases and it's deemed needed. The system looks and approaches it as follows;

IPC region -> demand level (calculate shaping needed) -> check highest user groups (determine which users if not all needs shaping) -> apply shaping -> recalculate.

Now as far as how they determine which user get's put in which group it has been said before that a person doing 40gb in two days will be placed on a higher level as a person doing 200gb in 20 days. Overall usage is more, but the amount used per day for example is much less.

Oh. I am in no way advocating that the the current level should be the status quo...hell no. The answer is increased capacity which has already been asked for.

We are shaping more people than we'd like, and this is why introducing increased capacity is what we're looking at moving forward :)

Of course there is a network problem - not enough capacity. Otherwise P2P wouldn't be nearly unusable for extended periods of time.
Shaping only avoids that your capacity problem doesn't impact other areas beside P2P - but it doesn't make the problem go away.
The only way you can say that there is no network problem is if you announce in your network policies that P2P is not supported.
If you don't do this, you should announce in the network status that due to capacity issues P2P services are heavily impacted and that you are working to add new capacity. Just having a green light and saying everything is fine is misleading.

Check the title of the thread, Skippy. If you regard any of what I've had to say as 'whining' you go can go jump straight off the nearest bridge.

Our network noticeboard is listed as OK because our network is fully operational. We know that we're shaping more clients than what we'd like to see - however this is being done (shaping P2P and downloads) to avoid massive latency and overall network congestion. This allows us to keep realtime activities unshaped.

Exactly my point. You don't need to keep us updated every 30min on how you feel

But I'm free to. Cool, huh. And now that I know you find my honest criticism of a service I pay good money for oh so annoying I'll make sure to double the frequency of my updates.

****, and you want to accuse me of whining.

Which is the same thing we were all complaining about and received an answer on. Maybe not the one we wanted but a valid one. So there are three things to do.

1.) Stick it out and deal with it
2.) Switch to a business account (Which a few of us have done until things get better)
3.) Move to another ISP (which I believe you opted for)

We are all frustrated and I am a big proponent of not tolerating bad service. But honestly flogging the horses decomposing corpse anymore is not going to help any more.

Let's try keep it on topic gents, and play nice :)

So, you're saying I shouldn't consider keeping dear Pakka abreast of developments with my Afrihost connection via PMs? :D I can only assume it hasn't dawned on him that 'feedback', in this instance, is a 2-way street.

I'm just saying let's not bite each others heads off :)
