Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Shaped at 7 in the morning?... :(

Shaping is always a function of demand on the network. We can't control when clients decide to download and use bandwidth. Hopefully the usage will die down (we're already seeing improvement since we had our provisional upgrades installed) and we'll see shping ease sooner and be applied a low slower :(

Hey Afripeeps,

So, I've currently got an uncapped account, but would like to bundle my line and save a few bucks. I've taken a look in the new ClientZone and don't see where I can add or bundle the line into my current package :( Some help please?

I'm really sorry that you are having this experience with us, especially if you PM'ed me and I was not helpful - I'm really really sorry about that.

We definitely are not just about taking money and delivering a poor service - we truly believe that service comes before profits - cos if our clients are happy they will grow and support our business for life.

I can understand the shaping part - but if you're realtime services are poor, there may be other issues at play here. Have you done any troubleshooting with our team on this?

Have done that to no avail please see my speed tally

Brilliant if it was a dail up account but I am on a 4mbps uncapped package with a line capable of 10 mbps
Never had this with my previous ISP
Please Please help!!

You'll find the bundle option in the Old Clientzone :)

We'll be emailing clients with Bundles who's lines have been upgraded. Essentially we'll pass on the line savings, but we're not going to be changing our data prices - as we feel they already very competitive with other Premium offerings.

With bundles though, many clients are going to be in a position where they may need to "waive' the upgrade due to line limitations which will most likely still prevent them from taking advantage of the upgrade. So we'll email you with details of whether you want to downgrade and take the saving on your line or upgrade your data and get more speed.

Am I correct in my understanding of this - when my 1Mbs line gets upgraded to 2 Mbs then I will have to pay more to Afrihost to take advantage of this? If this is the case then I think you will see a massive loss of clients to Telkom as they are not increasing their uncapped prices when the upgrades happen as far as I can see. Looks like the outcome of the upgrade for me will be:
Telkom upgrades me to 2Mbs for free.
Afrihost charge me more to take advantage of the extra speed i.e. 2Mbs
Afrihost then shape me back to 50% so I am back to what I should be getting now but paying more for it.

..................... If this is the case then I think you will see a massive loss of clients to Telkom .............................

Unfortunately IMO, this is probably what AH wants. Let people move in droves so they don't have to procure capacity. Win win situation for them.

Although I'm not shaped, real-time services are bad. Youtube buffers at 144p. I tried streaming the NZ rugby game. I gave up.

Torrents are flying though, running over 200kB/s on my 2mb line. So my line is OK.

Trace not too bad. Except for hop 7.

I have been shaped for a whole week now or even maybe longer. 50/50% on 1mb line. Normally i get about 75gb a month done. So far on 13.7gb. Thought we don't get shaped on Weekends.

You can stay on your current 1Mbps Uncapped Bundle for the same price if that's what you choose. The reality is you are going to be able to use a lot more data and we've decided to assess the new trends in data usage before we revise any pricing. We did the same thing last year when Telkom upgraded lines.

Unfortunately IMO, this is probably what AH wants. Let people move in droves so they don't have to procure capacity. Win win situation for them.

I don't see how it makes sense for us to want clients to move away from us - that would be a pretty insane business model. And since we've already ordered a massive capacity upgrade with Telkom, we'd be wasting our money as well.

There is something very weird going on with your DSL. There is little to no shaping happening in the EAST and I really can't understand why you're having throughput issues here - throughput on Capped, Uncapped and Business is currently excellent :(

I think we should create a new account and see if this still happens on your line. Please drop me a PM so we can get this sorted for you :(

There is almost no shaping happening in the South since new upgrades went live. It may be that our shaper hasn't picked you up as it should have to unshape you properly.

Please PM me and I'll get our guys to sort this out ASAP :(

I did a port recreate a bit earlier. Watching streaming F1 qualifying now. No buffering, lets hope it lasts.

Welcome to the land of telkom upgrades!
If you notice your ping, there is something very wrong with your exchange (and yes, this causes things to feel like dial up :/ )

Could you do a tracert and post results here?

Thanks! However, I have some bad news... See hop 2 (the first hop from your home to the exchange), those should not exceed 20ms, however your first one is 360ms. This means that there is something faulty with your local exchange ;(

I know it's quite a bummer, seeing as the lines were just upgraded, but you'll have to contact telkom/if your line is with afrihost, contact support and ask them to send a technician to fix the exchange. Shouldn't take long, but they only work on weekdays, so nothing can be done this weekend unfortunately :/

Could you help me with the correct wording I have to ask Telkom, If I tell them to send a Tech to fix the exchange they will probably tell me to take a hike, Thanks in advance

Sure. Tell them that you have an extremely high ping when reaching the exchange, and that throughput is bad. They will offer to do a port reset. Let them do that and if it still is bad, tell them you need a technician at the exchange to look at your line :)
