Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Hi there - are there any authentification issues today? Went to bed watching Hulu and woke up this morning with a red Internet light and a normal green DSL light burning? Checked through my phone and still got 50 gbs left for the month. Weird. Reset and checked cabling. :(

Back online - there was a fault in our town area :) Pew pew!

We'll be emailing clients with Bundles who's lines have been upgraded. Essentially we'll pass on the line savings, but we're not going to be changing our data prices - as we feel they already very competitive with other Premium offerings.

With bundles though, many clients are going to be in a position where they may need to "waive' the upgrade due to line limitations which will most likely still prevent them from taking advantage of the upgrade. So we'll email you with details of whether you want to downgrade and take the saving on your line or upgrade your data and get more speed.

AfriMan can you elaborate on this . . . how exactly will 1mbps, 2mbps and 4mbps uncapped users be impacted ?

Are we going to be bumped up to the next line speed (by telkom) and the next uncapped product speed (by AfriHost) ?? yes/no

I asked a similar question and this is the reply I got:
You can stay on your current 1Mbps Uncapped Bundle for the same price if that's what you choose. The reality is you are going to be able to use a lot more data and we've decided to assess the new trends in data usage before we revise any pricing. We did the same thing last year when Telkom upgraded lines.
So basically if you want to take advantage of your new line speed you have to pay AH extra, in my case another R100 a month to go from 1Mbs to 2 Mbs. You could of course move to TI and take advantage of the increase for free. Your choice but I know what I am going to do. ;)

hey guys. currently i am using telkom uncapped 1MB. when i download my speed never exceed 100kb. when i check speedtest i get 0.8MB for download and 0.5 for upload which is acceptable. i can even stream netfix. i want to move to another isp, wil i be able to get my download speed of 1MB or something closer to it?

Hi, 1Mbps means 100KBps. Its all about the capital 'B' or not so capital 'b'.

See, if I have a 10Mbps line (10240Kbps), I would divide that by 10 (closer to 8, but 10 is a good round number) to get 1024KBps download speed. With a 1Mbps line, the max download speed you can get is 110KBps. The normal download speed is around 100kb/sec and upload of around 50kb/sec.

So sorry, that is the max you are going to get from a 1Mbps line. If you want to download at 1MBps, you are going to have to upgrade to a 10Mbps line and account :-(

As the person above me stated, there's a difference between Mbps and MBps. The max throughout on a 1Mbps line would be around 120-130kBps

So AfriHost will be passing on ZERO savings/value back to its uncapped customers from the line speed upgrades.. ...

thanks my man. bits and Bites... it sucks....i was actually under the impression that we get bites instead of bits. somehow 3g gives better its just that is still expensive currently

They said they will be passing on savings for the physical line, but none for data at the moment. Anyway, for me (10Meg), it is still R200 cheaper to go with Afrihost than Telkom

Just a suggestion, I love the app BUT I'm still having to log onto the client zone to view my accounts shaping policy, Afriman can you make a suggestion to your developer(s) to include a feature that allows you to view the shaping policy from the app? Would be GREATLY appreciated :D

Something like this perhaps?

+1 would appreciate. Other clientzone functions would be awesome too.

Hi

How do I check if telkom has upgraded my line from 2mb to 4mb? The telkom adsl checker and broadband sites both say the maximum speed is 4mb. They don't say what account I actually have

Look at your router stats. It will show the increased sync speeds if it has been doubled.

We'll be passing on the savings or the additional line speed from Telkom in full, but for now our data prices will remain the same. We feel that our current data prices are still pretty competitive with our competitors upgraded data offers - and we'll review our pricing soon once the upgrades settle and we can assess the impact of that process.

Clients who have bundles with me mailed when their lines upgrade with their options going forward - most will be able to decide whether they'd like to stick with their current speeds and get a cash saving or upgrade to a higher speed option.

We still feel that our pricing still competes with our competitors offering free upgrades, so there's still a benefit to staying with us. However you're always free to decide what's best for you cos we don't lock you into a contract like other ISPs :)

It depends on the reasons you're not getting your speeds. If you're struggling becuase your line is far from your exchange or because there is an issue on the line itself - then you may not see an immediate improvement until a Telkom technician addresses those issues.

Best way would be to signup a FREE GB on our website and the test your line performance against what you're seeing with your current ISP account :)
