Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Of course - my suspicion was more directed at the streaming service provider than at your shaping mechanisms. Some of them use some bloody strange ways of transmitting their streaming data, and it can easily be "seen" as P2P or simply just HTTP.

It is possible, but we'd need to do more tests before we reach that conclusion. A lot more services are using P2P aspects to minimise costs on their side.

Out of curiosity, is it possible for you to make shaping exceptions for specific services when you find out that they use P2P to facilitate streaming?

I'm not 100% sure of that. I think i could be possible, but I would have to check.

I don't know if it is just me, but Browsing seems a bit sluggish today?

Other than that everything perfect.....

Shouldn't be the case - usage is relatively stable on the network at the moment so we should be seeing excellent realtime speeds. Have you run any tests on your side?

Yes, speed test over 10meg latency to afrihost.com 18ms.....

Might just be me....

I am already been shapped on afrihost on my 4th day of been with them and I have only download like 9 gigs and they shapped me already. Not a great start with afrihost.

What were you expecting when you signed up for a shaped product? Really? If shaping bothers you, pay R100 more and be unshaped.

I think a lot of people are still in the throttling threshold mindset, which is how most Uncapped products were run (and still are in some cases). The dynamic demand based systems are very new, and most home users are not really aware of how it works and how it benefits them in terms of value for money.

No worries, I don't get tired of explaining it because I think it's pretty awesome :)

What are Afrihost's throttling polices like compared to other ISPs? How's the performance for stuff like Twitch.tv, Youtube and gaming? Any feedback I'd appreciate, looking to switch ISPs ;)

Afrihost does not throttle but if the network is busy they do shape P2P and some downloads. Youtube and Twitch works well and gaming performance is good. I switched to Afrihost and I'm much happier now than I was with my old ISP, Afrihost is not perfect but they are much better than everyone else. Speak with Afriman/Afriguy, they are always helpful.

I think you guys will have a great time! However - a certain selection of users report HD streaming issues with Twitch, but that has been found to be a twitch server issue :/

Streaming is never shaped, and they will only shape downloads if the network is busy. Also, they have ordered new network capacity - so the shaping should decrease dramatically as soon as that is applied within a few weeks.

Personally, I have never been happier with an ISP. Yes - there is shaping, and yes, your downloads are affected, however - to me, it doesnt really matter, purely cause I let my downloads do their thing overnight (when its unshaped), and the shaper does not affect any browsing, youtube or gaming etc :)

Why don't you take out a free 1GB capped account for a test run :P

Unfortunately, this looks like an exchange issue :/ That means you will have to report a telkom fault :(
