Hi Clinton

I suspect the diag tool to be awesomely erratic.

Without using the tool:

Please "ping -n 10 8.8.8.8" and post results.

Please "tracert 8.8.8.8" and post results.

Internet is awesomely erratic

I think you guys will have a great time! However - a certain selection of users report HD streaming issues with Twitch, but that has been found to be a twitch server issue :/

Why don't you take out a free 1GB capped account for a test run :P

I think alot of these questions come from guys whose current ISP is supposedly the best thing since USB 3,0 ....

But their current ISP shapes to DEATH during the day ....
Current ISP has really poor support
Current ISP makes a new account every few months .....
Current ISP is in need of minor attitude adjustment injuries ....
Current ISP has a host of schemes, and we are always on the wrong one ....
Please - let me elaborate with hypothetical examples

If I am on the Noob Blue package, I an shaped during the day, especially Google homepage. I get told to pay more, better contention and better priority
So, I go to the Noob Blue Special Edition .... which is the same - just as bad...
So, I upgrade to the Golden Server, IT Happy Days Edition, (discounted for January and only ONE left !! ) - and .... no change, plus I cant log into my account.
So, I get an alternate routing ... ISP gives some tech jargon which sounds to me like he has a new Garmin ... But still cant surf during the day and it so happens that P2P is slow and we are advised to move to the ''what you earn plus 5%'' business package ...

If it wasnt for that 1Gig for free for life from AH, alot of us may have believed that the internet only works from 5pm to 7am and weekends :D

Well, I for one am over this .... and as sure as Father Christmas is a NPO and the Easter bunny who gives chocolate eggs is in cahoots with the tooth fairy who is on ARVs, I am leaving ..... and looking at AH :)

I made exactly the same move. From "Noob Special Plus" to "Leet Gold extra gamer 1000" and while it was mostly fine there were times you could not even browse.

On Afrihost on the other hand 99.9% of the time browsing is a dream. Same for streaming 90% of the time. Downloads (even smaller ones) can be a bit slow during business hours - but that's a price I'm happy to pay for stability (and there's always supercharge).

oh and:

Data Statistics
Data Used: 271.52 GB
Average Daily Usage: 9.05 GB
Projected Monthly Usage: 280.57 GB

4MB uncapped (non-business). Mostly NZB and I only download at night (11pm - 6am). Frankly I can do 12Gb a day if I want but one can only try out so many linux distros ;-)

What are Afrihost's throttling polices like compared to other ISPs? How's the performance for stuff like Twitch.tv, Youtube and gaming? Any feedback I'd appreciate, looking to switch ISPs ;)

We don't throttle anything, we sometimes shape (based on demand) non-realtime services like torrents. Streaming, browsing, gaming and other realtime services are never shaped or throttled. We also don't used fixed thresholds, so we only shape by demand, not punitively.

Shaped after 51GB really

Sorry that you're being shaped. As we've said many times, shaping is dependant on overall demand. From there, we shape from the most aggressive to lightest users until we match our available resources to the current demand. IF demand is excessive, any Uncapped user could potentially be shaped until the demand subsides :(

Looks to me like there is intermittent latency and packet loss on your line. Possible a line fault, maybe your sync is intermittently degrading, or there is an exchange issue. Could be congestion, but this looks more like a line fault :(

Afrihost does not throttle but if the network is busy they do shape P2P and some downloads. Youtube and Twitch works well and gaming performance is good. I switched to Afrihost and I'm much happier now than I was with my old ISP, Afrihost is not perfect but they are much better than everyone else. Speak with Afriman/Afriguy, they are always helpful.

Just remember that we shape as a result of demand, so only when we have to. We unshape as often as we can and for as long as we possibly can :)

I've actually found the tool to be pretty solid, it's been a great help to me because now we have standardised set of results to compare to a baseline in test conditions. I'd really encourage everyone to download the tool and use it for reporting their results :)

Thanks for this awesome feedback. It's good to know that so many clients are getting the awesome experience that we envisioned when we designed our network :)

Would someone explain the shaping policy if you don't mind?
Will I get 75% of the line speed capacity or will I get 25% of the line speed ?

May I make a suggestion to stop the confusion surrounding the "shaping policy" in the clientzone is to add the word "speed" after "download" and "P2P"?

That would definitely be a good idea. We know it by now, but new customers would get confused by those percentages. I know I was in the beginning, because I didn't know whether it was supposed to mean 70% speed or 70% slower.

Yes, the percentages reflect what you are likely to experience on the specific shaping profile being applied :)

Remember this is only on shaped services, like torrents or downloads, as the message indicates.

Judging by a few comments here, it does seem like it confuses a few people. This is a great suggestion :)

Haha

Hypothetical example, based on a true story.
