Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Quick question - I'm checking out Afrihost's ADSL packages and there are different prices for 1mb and 2mb uncapped - is that correct?

I thought since Telkom upgraded ADSL 1mb pricing now = 2mb pricing?

That's for the data part. Some clients didn't want to pay more for 2Mbps Uncapped, so they decided to stick with 1Mbps data for now, so we still have it open for them. Same for bundles, we'e allowing a 1Mbps Data with 2Mbps line at the same price as the previous 1Mbps Bundle :)

Afrihost does not throttle but if the network is busy they do shape P2P and some downloads. Youtube and Twitch works well and gaming performance is good. I switched to Afrihost and I'm much happier now than I was with my old ISP, Afrihost is not perfect but they are much better than everyone else. Speak with Afriman/Afriguy, they are always helpful.

"If" is a bit misleading. The network is constantly busy, even more so in the North (Gauteng) area. Which means you will be shaped every day, incl. weekends. Shaping only lifts at about 2 am till 7 am most days. On a 4 Mb line you are looking at about 100Kb/s on nromal download and 15KB/s on P2P downloads during the day.

There are talks of increased capacity in Feb though.

That based on current capacity and demand, but demand does fluctuate, as it did over Dec. And when our capacity goes live, then the experience will change accordingly. I don't think you could ever give those kind of static answers, every users experience will vary.

Just a quick thank you ... If it wasnt for that AH 1Gig today, I would beleive the internet was as mythical as the governments claims about job creation. :wtf:

Have 30 days to go .... then happy days.

Thanks AH. :)

We're glad it came in handy. We've got loads of clients who hold onto their Free GB like gold :)

I'm not even waiting my 30 days. Needed to wait almost 2 months, can't deal with this crap anymore. Go Afrihost

:( Most clients at other ISPs didn't have to pay more for the 2mb uncapped =/ at R297 that data price is about R100 more than most of the competition :(

But not by much, right? Cause I have a friend in Nortgate who was shaped almost exactly the same as me before he switched to a Business account to be able to use the line he is paying for, and I'm far away in Rivonia. I was still shaped at 1 am last night, while I just saw a post on OpenWeb's forum that their ENTIRE network was unshaped by 10 pm already.

If I'm the worst case, then so be it, but trying to play down the issue with "every users experience will vary" is not right. You can not honestly tell me that there are people in Gauteng who are not shaped at this moment.

Awesome. Don't break the bank though. You can always grab a free GB and topup for now, if that works out cheaper.

Whatever's best for you :)

A lot of those are for throttled products which you can't really compare to ours. We also made a conscious decision to hold back and revise prices when the upgrades settled to see where everyone landed up line speed wise. I think our clients will be better off for that cos we'll ensure they are getting the best deals and options :)

At the moment, there are probably users shaped to varying degrees according to their individual profiles. There are times, with our current capacity, when most clients could be shaped, just like there are times when many aren't while others still are. I think it's a mistake to assume that if you are shaped the rest of the network is.

If by rest of network you mean Cape Town area, then yes they might not be shaped. But I can't believe you are trying to say that not everyone on the Gauteng are affected by your capacity issues/shaping. I am at 70GB for this month, shaped every day of the week, with "most" nights shaping only lifting between 1 and 7 am. My co-worker is on 7 GB for this month and he is currently being shaped to 25% on a 2Mbps line! So please tell me, what criteria did you use when your "shaper" decided to shape him? There is a pretty big difference between our profiles and it seem we are equally shaped at locations far away form each other. So no I can in fact assume everyone in Johannesburg at least is shaped atm.

Don't waste your time dude, the AfriRep will just go around in circles with you, I'm also shaped in the Eastern Cape, constantly! Afrihost current shaping policy = cough up the extra bucks for business uncapped or just deal.

As I said, it could be the case at certain times, but it won't necessarily always be the case. Your friend on 7GB is likely to be unshaped much earlier than you when demand subsides. So you may see shaping alleviated at a certain time, but his experience will be be different.

Hahhahaah I cannot believe this shaping crap is still happening. All started with the "iOS" release, well that is what was blamed initially. We were told the shaping would have gotten better as time went along. That was in September last year. Here we are, still arguing about the same crap.. LOL.. Really fail

That's not the case at all. Not sure why you are shaped in the EC, cos you'd be routing to Cape (South) IPC which is generally a lot less shaped.

Guys, it a system. It's not like we have a guy sitting there deciding to shape or not based on what he had for breakfast. It's dynamic system that works with two major variable. Capacity and Demand. Experience will vary as those variable vary. Obviously capacity is not going to really vary in real terms, but in relative terms to the demand at any given point, but there will be times, like now where we will increase capacity based on increases in demand.

I don't know if this is still a point of confusion but this is exactly how it works. We don't actually control shaping, our client base does through their demand at any given point.

I think if you'e only going by that, then yo would have missed a lot in between. Telkom delivered partially on our IPC order in late November, and most clients experience very little to no shaping over the December holidays.

Now we're awaiting the arrival of the rest of our order which should also help give Uncapped users a better experience :)
