Don't waste your time dude, the AfriRep will just go around in circles with you, I'm also shaped in the Eastern Cape, constantly! Afrihost current shaping policy = cough up the extra bucks for business uncapped or just deal.

Yes I see. Canned responses. What I was trying to do is give the new user insight into what their uncapped service actually is, and not what the reps are trying to make it out as. (Youtube. YAY!!) Its completely unacceptable in my book, I don't do "just deal". Come Feb, if things don't improve, I'm off to OpenWeb or a cheaper capped account.

I think if you'e only going by that, then yo would have missed a lot in between. Telkom delivered partially on our IPC order in late November, and most clients experience very little to no shaping over the December holidays.

Now we're awaiting the arrival of the rest of our order which should also help give Uncapped users a better experience

One question for you.
Why when using tracert some of the hops end half-way to the Cape before it returns back to Gauteng.
Look-up for IP's show they end closebye to a town called Douglas.
This should reflect to high latencies issues.

If by rest of network you mean Cape Town area, then yes they might not be shaped. But I can't believe you are trying to say that not everyone on the Gauteng are affected by your capacity issues/shaping.

Nope, shaped to death here too. And there seems to be an element of chance involved when it comes to realtime services as well. Either it works or it doesn't, no real reason why either. In the process of convincing family and friends to try other ISP's.

I don't see how me saying some you don't like or understand is a canned response. That's a little unfair when I'm taking the time to explain exactly how things work. It's consistent because that is the truth and there are no more layers of complexity or conspiracy to divulge here.

The thread goes through a few pages a day, so you would have definitely missed some stuff. But like I said, a lot has changed since the iOS issues, so that was a quick breakdown

We are always shaping dynamically across the country based on demand in real time. It's actually a very simple system at the end of the day

It's common knowledge that networks are quiet over the holidays and people are always able to download a lot more without being shaped.

Even without your Nov IPC order and with no changes to the network, there would have been no shaping over "December holidays".

Afrihost just suck at predicting/forecasting demand as this is the second time now that they have been caught with their pants down, I cancelled my uncapped during the first fiasco with the MTN move, and have always said it would take a miracle for me to come back, like the second coming or something.

Granted, when there is enough capacity, like between the first (Oct/Nov 2012) and second (Oct/Nov 2013) fubar, there is no better ISP than AH.

I don't think forecasting is a simple calculation, and from reading a few article recently on the subject, a few ISPs have said that is is exceptionally difficult. Becuase Telkom don't really allow you to have spare IPC for emergencies, you literally have to walk a fine line between ordering too little capacity or ordering too much and pricing yourself out of the market as a result. When you add the 6 weeks - 3 month turnaround time to the mix, it's a very difficult proposition. We did order capacity last year, but we only received partial delivery. If we had received everything we ordered, then it would have been a very different story

I hear you there, Telkom IPC don't make it easy.

I don't see anymore free line speed upgrades from Telkom in future so hopefully forecasting will be easier to predict, and that this kinda thing doesn't happen again?

Just thought I would share this quick experience with you all.

I currently have a 1 Meg business data acc bundled with a 2 meg line for R397 . Everything runs at 110kb/s, 24/7, Truly great.

Decided last night to see what would happen if I switch to the 2 meg standard data with my 2 meg line. As the price is also R397. Spoke to a rep on live chat support, Eugene K . Nice chap. He said not a problem on switching. And if I wasn't happy not a problem switching back.

The reason I wanted to swap over to the extra speed. Was I was getting told a few times from Afriman/guy , that demand here in the Easter Cape , ( Port Elizabeth to be exact ) wasn't at all high. So I shouldn't be shaped that much. If any.

Exactly after 20 minutes from speaking to Eugene K. I clicked start on my Torrents at 9:30 Pm . It was running at 7kb/s. Logged into my clientzone. Was already being shaped at 18% download / 6.5 % p2p. Couldn't believe it.

Was back on live chat support . Got Eugene K again. And had it switched back to my 1 meg business data. When I asked why I was being shaped so quickly, In a place that doesn't demand much capacity. Was hit with a copy paste answer. As it was about 2 paragraphs long , 10 seconds after I asked my question.

So I don't think region matters . If the demand is high any where in the country all is affected.

When demand is high in an IPC region afaik. The Jhb guys were heavily shaped at one point, and we in Cpt were not.

I just saw a post on OpenWeb's forum that their ENTIRE network was unshaped by 10 pm already.

Sure they were...... on OW last night my torrents were dead, the line was slow ...

In fact at 10pm last night, I was checking out AH ...... having the same discussion as you in reverse ....

If you would be bothered by the shaping, yes, the business accounts are lovely. I would suggest checking out the regular Uncapped after the new IPC goes live.

Always take business over standard if the speed is not important to you! You could always downgrade to home uncapped when the new capacity goes live
