Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Yes, because this is my first post in this thread, and I've not heard all that before. I don't give a stuffed fig any longer - whether wilfully or not, I've effectively been systematically robbed by Afrihost for months on end, and my patience is wearing really, really thin.

I do understand where you coming from though. I hope the new capacity comes live ASAP

haven't seen you post in a while :)

We're very close to having new capacity go live. Will update you as soon as I have more info :)

Yeah. Stockholm Syndrome is a hell of a thing. :D

Nothing's changed at all for however many months, so there hasn't been much reason to post, has there?

I have resorted to switching everything off. It's useless, and so is the latency, hope it is sorted out by tomorrow :) Maybe there is a problem in JHB at the moment? Been crazy since 5.

Yeah shaping is still very high at the moment on all 3 regions but I think there is more shaping in JHB at the moment. Shaping basically eases off at like 11 PM everyday in DBN though which is where I'm situated

Sorry to keep repeating the same thing. I can see how that would be annoying :(

Sorry about this, we're still investigating on our side. We haven't got any definitive feedback as yet :(

Things are starting to look better, I think latencies should stabilise shortly - maybe next 5-10 mins maybe :)

This doesn't seem to be shaping related, seems like it was an issue on the North network but looks to be resolved now - just checking latencies on my side - looks like we're almost back to normal again :)

I'm guessing Pretoria, Waverley, is perpetually on high demand...
Soundcloud streaming buffers every 10 seconds, youtube buffers even at 240, I'm really unhappy with this constant issue.

And downloaded the network tool thing, it won't launch, it just idles in taskbar services

They got to keep the standards up for business and capped accounts, so home uncapped must take a back seat.

BTW any idea why I am unable to use the fix my line tool?

Just says: "Tweak ADSL Line failed
Please try again. If you still have problems, please contact us."

Spoke too soon

Any ideas about exactly what is going on there?

They got to keep the standards up for business and capped accounts, so home uncapped must take a back seat.

It's not really how we do it. Yes, to an extent we have to ensure that Business and Capped have enough capacity and they are premium products. But also, we have to try to manage the demand for Uncapped data. Otherwise Uncapped users could literally use our entire capacity. So shaping is a necessary device to make this a viable product. Other ISPs do this via throttling, but we believe that our system ultimately delivers more bandwidth to the end client and offers a better overall experience.

Remember that as we add more capacity, the experience will also improve as less shaping will needed to manage Uncapped demand.

Just FYI, most of our network demand comes from Uncapped accounts pretty much :)

Sometimes the line fails at the Telkom service portal. We use an API to call the feature from Telkom's direct link into the exchange. For some reason, we sometimes get a Port Recreate Failed message - but usually the request is still carried out on the exchange side. But we'll return that as an error on our side, because there's no way of knowing from the API if it was successful or not, unless we get the correct Success notification.

Looks like some changes were being made to improve performance on the network last night. Let's hope we see some improvement in performance and hopefully shaping as well :)

We saw this latency last night. Looks like our team were working on the network. Should be back to normal now. Seeing pretty solid latency on my side.
