Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Well whatever this test account is that the CC team gave me, I want one. Works perfectly.

Got home and tested my home uncapped on youtube, shaping active and youtube sux. Speed spikes all over the place.

Put the test account in and whalla. Perfect.

Hope they can find the problem as it's not my line or exchange as this demonstrates.

I think it's a normal capped account :)

Well in that case...the disparity in YouTube performance is alarming.

The CC team will be running my account through it's paces from today so I really hope they find the issue.
I've read a few complaints on slow speeds etc in here, capped and even business.

Perhaps an underlying cause? I dunno...just hope they can fix it :D

Thanks for the solid support Afri!

Hi all

In the process of moving from MWEB to Afrihost purely on a pricing issue and had good results on a "pay as you go" (unshaped) account with Afrihost that I subscribed to. Therefore decided (with much trepidation) to move to Afrihost.

Now on an uncapped, unshaped 4M business account with Afrihost so no shaping/throttling issues to contend with. All was good to start with and then the VOIP PABX started reporting the server as unreachable. Spent a few days trying to solve the problem as I thought it may be a configuration issue only to find out that the real problem was an abnormally high packet loss on the Afrihost connection. It ranges from about 4% to >20%. Changed the router to 3 different routers and tried each on 2 different ADSL lines - packet loss was consistent. From what I could see the fault appeared to be within the MTN network. See attached screenshot.

Logged a fault with Afrihost and got the usual "Kindly please Be advised i picked up errors on the line and cleared them" Need I say that nothing changed. Need I add that there was total denial of any problem on the Afrihost side. Now a bit angry so did some further tests and changed nothing other than the username and password back to the MWEB account. Surprise!! Packet loss at ZERO, NOTHING, NOT ONE. Changed it back to Afrihost and NO SURPRISE back to 5% packet loss.

To some this is a clear indication of a line fault. These people need help. Fast!! Please save me from this nonsense. It is time for service providers to stand up and acknowledge problems right up front. Denial only serves to create enormous customer frustration and anger. As I was in the process of moving to Afrihost at that time I watched the forum discussion on the problems in the "Southern Region" with weeks of denial until there was only some admission when the evidence became totally overwhelming. This really does create some seriously angry customers. Surely it is really simple to do the tests and confirm the complaints. Not rocket science for an average level of competence. The first step to solving a problem is to acknowledge and recognise the problem. Denial is the road to hell.

Afriman / Afriguy please assist.

I think there is definitely a lot of truth to what you say, and I don't believe that we look at denial as a way to get out of a query or problem. Sometimes we have to posit a theory based on the evidence we have, and those can be totally wrong, or right on the money. That usually depends on the experience of the consultant and the quality of the testing. I think our team always does their best to be helpful and make the best assumptions possible based on the information they have - but things do sometimes go wrong and sometimes we get it wrong.

Looking at the results it definitely looks like you're getting greatly varying results here, and my suggestion would be that we do more thorough testing and then map out a process to get this resolved. While contention may intermittently affect throughput, we don't expect packet loss or increased latency on the network, so those are pretty crucial service issues that must be addressed.

If you could PM me, with all the details, we can get started. It would really help us identify any problems and possibly help out others who may experience this, so I would definitely appreciate your assistance.

If there is a problem, they'll find it - those guys are like a dog with a bone ;)

Latency in the south seems to be broken. Getting 500ms local...currently using backup WA account.

Great to see you guys are seeing normal results again! Mind posting some traceroutes?

I still say...pull the plug on the IPC...let it rest ffor 30 seconds and plug back in

Anyway. Thank you Afriguy for reporting my problem to CC team. Got the password issue sorted. Will wait for feedback from those guys and enjoy the temp account in the mean time. (which runs brilliantly by the way)

So is this the problem in Cape Town what I had problems with this whole week? High ping of 200+

The issues from earlier have been sorted out :)
If you're still having problems please paste a traceroute here so I can have a look at what's happening.

As requested, I have logged a fault with Telkom already, since not telkom nor afrihost can help me thus far, getting very frustrated. Same story with a mweb account and Telkom guest account.
