Web Africa.
Streaming is excellent.

I'm trying out uncapped, and if I get throttled, I'm going to get a 200GB capped account.
 
I have also cancelled with AH and done exactly the same as you.
I save 100 bucks, and if their uncapped is carp, then I'll switch to their capped account.

Sweet, at least you're saving :)
For me, I'm on 10Mb, so prices for a 10Mb uncapped bundle are exactly the same, but if I switch to the 200G capped, it will be R100 more.... but that will be money well spent.
 
Well I was up at 2am last night finishing another deadline, and I noticed that my home uncapped was still shaped at 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P. When I woke up at 7am, the shaping was at 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P. So either we only get 4 hours or unshaped, or we don't get unshaped at all.

My experience tells me that Afrihost is oversubscribed. Since they have decided against upgrading their IPCs yet again, I'm sure they expected quite a few people to leave. The 'testing' also probably helped them shed quite a few clients. Anything to protect the bottom margin for MTN.

Unfortunately Afrihost have damaged their reputation. I work for a big company (100 - 120 employees), and the general consensus with Afrihost is that they are now MWEB 2.0, or have become worse than Mweb. Quite a few of my colleagues have cancelled their accounts (capped, business & home uncapped) because their speeds aren't good enough, or streaming was terrible.

They may have protected their profits in the long run, but they have definitely ruined their image. It is going to take a lot of work to get that back.

Jeebuz :mad: This is insane! Hope you have already cancelled with AH today. How the mighty have fallen :( It's very clear that AH is no longer serving their clients' best interests at heart. AH's new goal is to keep MTN happy no matter what. I knew something like this would happen when I heard the news about MTN acquiring controlling stakes in AH a few months ago.

I cancelled just now, was notified that cancellation will take effect midnight 31 July 2014. Was asked why I'm cancelling, & said cause of the crazy shaping, I may just be a drop in the ocean to them but I'm voting with my wallet...
 
I moved to WA home capped 240gig. Streaming 1080 no issues. Downloading at 850kb/s (line only syncs at 8mbit)

I feel Turbocharge is a ****ing joke - it's the ISP equivalent of DRS in F1; a system to placate the stupid people into thinking they're getting a decent product. And at an additional cost, nogal.

If you want to leave the management of traffic up to your personal preference, then an unshaped connection is a better choice. As soon as we start talking about semi-shaped service, it has to be up to the ISP to decide which services will be shaped (and to what extent) based on the available resources and their gauging of what their client's priority is.

Shaping was always a function of the product, and we were shaping by demand previously. So we're testing whether a measure of static shaping in the periods of peak demand will ultimately give our clients a better overall Uncapped experience, based on our understanding of what the majority of our clients feel are priority services during peak and off-peak periods.

As I've said before, nothing has been decided permanently, which is why we haven't yet made permanent changes to our AUP. Once we have made a final decision to change or not change our shaping system, we'll update our clients and literature accordingly.

We shouldn't be shaping gaming so we'll need to troubleshoot to confirm that this is due to shaping acting on the traffic. If the traffic is using P2P elements, or is being mis-classified, we'll only be able to determine that by monitoring your traffic in realtime, so we'll need to arrange a time with you to setup this testing.

We can always improve on our communication. Essentially our shaping policy is still based on the same principles, we're just setting the hours of peak demand, instead of allowing the system to determine this in realtime during those peak periods.

Gaming is definitely not shaped, unless the traffic signature contains P2P elements. We can determine that by using a turbocharge while gaming.

Remember that shaping also only affects throughput and not latency, so it sounds like there could be another issue here :(

On a related note, over the past week I've been noticing I'm not becoming unshaped at around midnight as per usual. I've been up at 3am on numerous mornings and still have 25%/6.5% shaping applied. Judging from the amount of data I'm able to pull per night, it seems as though I'm only becoming unshaped for maximum 1 hour, just before the shaping window begins in the early morning again. Has something changed?

We;re looking at different methods to try to unshape faster and maximise consumption over a 24 hour period. It difficult because we use a dynamic system to predict usage will work within the system's parameters. But I do have a commitment from our technical team that this is something they are working on as part of the testing we're doing.
