I personally think its just his av firewall, I know avast likes to do that :D

Ah, yes, peerblock was on in the BG.

International download using that test should be close to full speed, no?

Yes. It should. Maybe disable it for the test or enable http in Peerblock, just to rule out Peerblock affecting the test.

Edit:
Sorry. I see Zertop says it will be the shaped speed.

Maybe running something like PeerBlock or something similar?

Hell YES!!

I forgot about that!

This has caused me grief in the past.

Thanks for the reminder :)

PS: Peerblock: A small price (it's free but you end up having stupid issues like this) to pay instead of receiving copyright notices from america forcing you to come up with a cokkaby story as to why you did it and why you won't do it again or else your service will get "suspended" (Only experienced this with IS, and explained to them that my peerblock wasn't on or something and promised I wouldn't let it happen again).

While I'm in a "rock the boat" mood, I would like to bring up the whole RICA situation with ISP's and don't really care that this is the wrong thread to bring this up in but here goes:

As I'm not a big fan of big brother, I don't always rush to "comply" with the law, especially when the "law makers" themselves are not so...

Anyway, I have been with many ISP's. I could be talking **** now but I think the only one I'm actually registered with is AH as I remember sending my ID when I first signed up with them way back when I got ADSL in 2009, ironically, I think was before RICA, and was to protect the children or something with child pron or along those sort of lines I remember them saying.

I don't remember doing this with any other ISP.

Take Plugg for example:

I was a customer of them for more than a year. They updated their website after about as long, which ended up showing ones RICA status, showing me as un-RICA'ed, and right next to that showing me how long I have been a customer of theirs, which was for more than a year, even with them stating in the T's & C's that they would suspend you after a few days only (just checked T's & C's quick and could'nt find anything straight away) if you didn't comply....

Wait! I remember now where I saw this, and to be fair to Plugg, it was in an email from connection.co.za (after I dropped plugg due to pricing and also to try out connection as the whole setup was virtually identical with Plugg, talking about clientzone website policies etc, all the same on the surface, and had to "experience" it for myself what the difference actually was because the price was so much less).

Point is, I've never been "suspended" because of RICA or lack of peerblock causing me to get a copyright warning. What does this say about our powers that be?

Sorry again for derailing this thread, but I really don't see this maintaining momentum on it's own.

*Goes and pours another double jack on the rocks*

:o

\tried to look for a smiley face with horns :D

Seeing as we are comparing ISPs ^^

The last week or so, and the next few weeks will put me into airports around SA.

Because of this I have just realized that with AH the Always On connectivity is an option that one needs to pay for .....

Not sure about all the other ISPs, but certainly MWEB and OW offer this free.... Just pointing this out .....

AFAIK mweb's wifi is time limited, 5GB (which is more than enough for wifi) with AH for R39 is an awesome deal, a bit of a no-brainer for me :)

When this account is not shaped it runs like a train out of control.

@Zertop - I downloaded the linux torrent partially with no shaping applied to my account at this stage.
I ran for about 12 minutes and it averaged 396.7k/B/s. (37 out of 45 seeds)
Average was still climbing slowly, but I had to stop due to other dl I had to do and would have impacted on the speed.
Spiked at 481kB/s, but mostly at 422kB/s.

So now I'm waiting for the shaping to kick in and then I will try the torrent again.

Edit:
Did not have to wait long for shaping to kick in (@about 10:20)
Went from nop shaping too: 50% & 50%, 25% & 12.5 to 18.8% * 6.25%

10kB/s average that I received on the NZb's yesterday.
Makes sense as both nzb's and torrents are classified as P2P

Projected finish time has dropped from 15 minutes to 1 day.
Seeds = 37 of 121 connected.
Average dl speed dropped from 396 to 176kB/s and still was dropping badly.
Average download is about 10kB/s.
Peak was 22kB/s (literally once)
Lowest 4.4kB/s

So definitely getting 50% less on the indicated shaping speed.

So compared to the unshaped average of 396kB/s to 176 @ 6.25% shaping.

That does not tell the real story though.
My average was climbing while unshaped and I have no doubt that the average would have gone above 400kB/s, possibly to 412, which is my normal speeds on downloads.

On the other hand, when shaped to 6.25%, i should get about 26kB/s on 4Mbps line according to my calculations.

Average was about 10kB/s though and had the download ran any longer the average of 176kB/s would have reflected that 10kB/s

That is more than 50 % less than I would expect at that shaping speed.
On an account where I loose 93.75% of my expected line speed for about 18 - 20 hours a day.

That is not Ayoba AH.

I've done this test, because someone asked that I should compare the torrent compared to a Nzb.

10 or 13kB/s is not a lot if you compare 400kB/s to 413kB/s, but getting 10 when you expecting 26kB/s is massive.

I will now wait and hope that AH provide me with feedback and either tell me that my calculations are wrong(strong possibility I assume) or explain what is going on.

I just can't accept an account that is shaped all the time I'm awake, even though I download overnight, I like the choice to download whenever.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Hopefully the new capacity will be here soon :)

I'm in agreement.
Personally I feel shaping more than 75% of line speed is robbery.
More than that it is not much more than a browsing, email and streaming account.
Why would I need an uncapped account for browsing, email and occasional streaming(in my case)?

I want uncapped because I download a fair amount. Some of those downloads I need in the day.
Even with shaping, I'm still pulling a lot of GB's, but I did not sign-up for a midnight browsing account.

Edit:
I understand the current situation though and I'm sure I will be a happy camper again, once the capacity is added.

Yes, then it's a different story, but their use of the word "soon" pisses me off. They kept promising an ETA as soon as they had the info, but alas, when the north got upgraded, even Afriman was surprised, so don't expect an ETA for south or east, it will happen soon like they've been saying since the beginning of the year, or to be really realistic, since last year!

Like I said, all ISP's are the same, lead you by the nose and string you along for as long as they can, hoping you fall for it long enough until things sort themselves out.

I guess I can't blame them as this is what their job is: to retain customers, I just hate the double speak propaganda borderline dishonesty.

Don't hold your breath.

The main reason I moved to AH was because mwebs skype quality was really poor. Through all the AH ups and downs (almost entirely down since holidays ended) at least skype was mostly rock solid. Well right now I couldn't chat to my gf who is in Spain. Even audio only was impossible. I'm not a happy camper.

Please would you run this: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/576445-quot-Help-me-fix-my-internet-quot-report-tool

It'll allow us to see whether the problem is line related/Afrihost related :)
