Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Afriman, I have a 1meg uncapped and a 1gig free account with Afrihost, the 1 meg uncapped account speed test returned .5meg on a 2meg line, 'websites took ages to open' and the free account returned 1.5meg on a 2 meg line, much better response, what may I ask is the reason for this?

Because they shape uncapped, your 1Gb free account is unshaped.

.5 meg on a 2 meg line is more like heavy throttling! Or maybe the account has not increased with the line speed. Either way that's just wrong.

..its crazy, I sit...and sit...and sit..waiting for BF4 Battlelog to load..

Its only very recent mind you.. oversubscribed maybe?

The business 'unshaped' service has gone to pot lately. They also admitted shaping it a few weeks ago when they had a bandwidth issue, so it isn't guaranteed unshaped.

More recently I posted some bad speeds. My 1Meg connection, which normally speeds along at .90Mbps suddenly dropped to around half (I did about 5 speed tests to confirm). When I contacted support, they said 1Meg is not guaranteed to run at full speed! Seriously, their support is getting very arrogant and kinda 'dont care'.

I'm not sure what you mean here, We've never shaped Business, though I think there was a misunderstanding when I was explaining how shaping affects the overall network when some people thought I was saying the Business is shaped (which it never was).

It would be odd for your connection to drop on realtime service like speedtest even if there was shaping though, so it definitely sounds like we need to do further investigation.

Have you run the network test app yet?

It could be a variety of reasons. Sometimes when you change accounts you effectively reset your DSL port and resync your line, so results are great, especially initially. Were your results the same when you logged back into your regular account?

Definitely not throttling, cos we don't do that. We'll need to troubleshooting to see what's actually happening here :(

You're confusing two events.

Your support guy said that there was a problem and all services were being 'managed'. When I pressed him, he admitted this was Afrihost's new term for shaping. Even the unshaped accounts were affected.

Regarding the speed problem, the support team responded by saying that 0.5 is "average" for a 1Meg line. I also find you can't argue with them. Do you stand by your support that 0.5 is average, because I can tell you I have been getting .9 roughly since the lines went to 1Meg?

Does anyone audit what the support people do and how long they take to answer?

Apart from the ever present shaping since Friday, real times services are also not great for me today, especially browsing.

Sir please realize that support is not ideally the best at the moment at Afrihost. Afrihost are still getting in more support personal and training them so not everything is going to be smooth sailing at the support compartment at the moment. They still learning :)

Lol, are you a support rep at Afrihost?

Hi All,

I'm currently connected to the Welgemoed exchange in Cape Town and have been having sporadic exchange congestion issues, as well as only being able to sync at 6mb/s.

Is it possible to request that Telkom move my line to the Kenridge exchange (seems to be considerably closer to me)?

Well, you can try. PM TelkomZA. He'll be able to tell you if it's possible, or at least whether your exchange can expect a capacity upgrade soon.

@ Afriman

Cancelled my account with other ISP just waiting out my month cancellation :( . Looking forward to joining AH. Quick question will your prices be reduced on all your packages as you 2 mb business package is looking mighty tempting :)

I doubt it, since it's already 1 day until March and people have to be notified. AH is still looking expensive with their old speed offerings and high price.

Ok so after testing over the past 3 days.

DayZ is unplayable on Afrihost uncapped on South african server. Playable on international with 300+ ping, no issues at all.

To play DayZ on local server, one must buy a capped account from Afrihost. works like a charm.

so end of the day i get told MTN dont see an issue and cant resolve it.

Its clear to me that the uncapped product is shaped for that traffic and capped account is not. not rocket science

Anyone else Twitch streaming been really poor I have to put in on mobile just to stream it and then it still lags. 4meg line.

My 4Mbps line was slugish all day. I see Businesses account guys also complaining. Seems like the ball is being dropped here.
I already cancelled one of my hosting accounts this week.

Played GT6 tonight on the PS3 and my mic was useless. The guys could not hear a word I was saying, as I was breaking up.

Couple that with almost permanent shaping since Friday and my patience is running thin.

All uncapped data package prices will be reviewed. Not sure about capped though.
