Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Has anyone else been ADSL-less since yesterday's load shedding? My internet was active until the load shedding shut down our area. Few hours later the power is back on but no ADSL, the phone dial tone sound is there, but no ADSL. Checked this morning, still nothing. Used the mobile app to 'fix line' and still nada

Maybe your router is bust?

Don't think so, but I have no alternative since incredible has my other one

I personally don't really count netflix as a fully supported "real-time service" as it requires workarounds to get it working in South Africa. These workarounds sometimes cause the shaper to mis-categorize the netflix stream data, therefore causing an issue with shaping :/

Hopefully Netflix will be in SA soon, and then we can really get it sorted :D
Sorry Zertop, but I'm with Hogrod on this one. If that's the case, then they need to update the shaper to recategorise it. It is a realtime service, whether viewers need t use a workaround or not. Besides, 99% of Netflix users use the SAME workaround, thereby making it a hell of a lot easier to add exceptions to the shaping system and make sure routing isn't an issue.

Sorry, but I get miffed when people go "oh realtime services are prioritised" and then "ah except for that one". No.

PS: If Netflix ever comes to SA, it'll most likely only have 10% of the content that the US one has, and we'll end up still using UnoTelly :P

You know you keep saying this but I've told you guys time and time again its nonsense.
I have tracerts tests and posts proving realtime is affected due to lack of capacity, particularly evident when shaping is being applied to an account and no latency. And I'm in the South.

Take my word for it, I've been running netflix for two years and I can tell when realtime is not running 100%. Stop misleading customers ffs.

Don't waste your breath dude, I've tried telling everyone this, including their CEO, you will just get the same response

Their network would fall over if they included netflix into "real time" - LOL

Their network is falling over, they accepting new customers but not increasing capacity, its not rocket science

FTFY:

Their capped and business would fall over if they included netflix into "real time" - LOL

Come on man. Workarounds play NO part, it's a real time service like any other using the same protocols for streaming.

Edit: Ok depending on the workaround perhaps, but you need to clarify what a workaround is.
I use a DNS, so it will play no part in confusing any shaping rules. So what you claim, holds no weight.

Yes, but remember - using a DNS changes the route the data takes to get down to you - so it may affect it. But you are right, I was talking more about vpn's :)

I for one am pretty bleak about this new shaping stuff. I dont even download that much, not more usage than a couple gigs a day, and when I want one specific thing from p2p it crawls along at 20k/sec on a 4mb line with max speed of 430k. I moved from 2mb business for this? First time in years that I actually feel like I'm not getting the great value that I've come to expect from Afrihost...especially since they never dropped their uncapped prices when everyone else did. Not sure if these power outtages have anything to do with it, but I will say that my overall user experience of Afrihost 4mb uncapped has gone from a 9 out 10 down to a 6 out a ten. :\

Shaping is hardly a new thing :( however, it has been more present down in the cape. New capacity is on its way though, so shaping should be a thing of the past :)

Sounds like your exchange blew, could you ask your neighbour whether their ADSL is working?

I see where you are coming from. Why don't you pm afriguy, he'll help you out :) or email Gian.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks he's banging his head against a brick wall.

Heya All,

Need to some help confirming a few things, I called through to afrihost support now. Would like to do some fact checking :-)

This is for my Dad's connection, Bergvliet, Cape town 7945.

He recently moved from Mweb to Afrihost and signup up with 10meg uncapped.

However after a day or two, it was noticed that he is only syncing on a 4meg profile
-> Downstream / Upstream (Kbps) 4096/512

I called through to Afrihost support, and they are telling me that the exchange has been locked to 4megs by Telkom and they are unable to change any port settings. (g.dmt to anything higher)

What confuses me is, according to www.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/

Service Available
Maximum speed available in your area 10 Mbps
Your Current Service speed 4 Mbps

This shows that 10megs is available.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Regards
Malooga

That site is not accurate, I'm also stuck on d.gmt, have to have adsl2+ to get 10mb.

2Meg Uncapped

Data Statistics
Data Used: 19.69 GB
Average Daily Usage: 2.81 GB
Projected Monthly Usage: 87.18 GB

Account Overview
Account Status: Account Active
Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P

Getting EXTREMELY annoyed with Afrihost, this is basically a glorified Youtube account. FFS. 2Mb account and it's just shaping all damn day. When do we actually download anything?

Then we have "well its shaped because of your usage". Well here's the thing all my usage is from Youtube so when can I actually download anything?

What is his router model? You would have to have to have an adsl2+ compatible router :) make sure the router is set to ADSL mode and not g.dmt :)

Your shaping is better than mine, you're one of the luckier ones
