Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Hi, What impact does the IPC capacity have on the business uncapped ADSL? If I switch to business uncapped will I be less likely to be shaped?

So this is the second night of atrocious throughput in the North. The entire Easter weekend was fine but last night and this I can't even maintain a medium quality Hulu steam...

There are no obvious indications of anything being wrong - local traces are at sub 18ms and to the US at 200ms or so. Throughput just sucks arse. Testmy.net gives me below 1mbps on a 4mb line.

:(

Oh, no shaping... Supposedly.

You won't(shouldn't) be shaped at all on business.

Tried other ISP accounts?

Does the 25th or 27th (can't recall which is the cut off date for cancelling) play a role in the Pause option?

If you pause now, it will only pause at the end of the month :)

Remember, this only pauses the data portion - you will still be charged for your line (as Telkom does not offer line pausing)

Z :)

We are seeing the South IPC started to ease off in terms of shaping, so lets see how things progress tonight.

If this is shaping easing in the south, then I dread to see how it is when it is worsening. Almost 10 pm and still at 12.5%/ 6.25%. No change or let up whatsoever.

Its after 10:00 PM, Shaping Policy still: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P, sugar coat it how you want, thats just not a superior service and we shouldnt be paying a premium

Shaping is based on the overall demand on our network as opposed to your individual usage. We do this to allow us to keep realtime services like browsing, streaming etc available as an unshaped service.

Your accounts shaping is dynamically adjusted according to our usage. With the added capacity the shaping should be easing earlier.

This does not seem to be true - I cannot believe that the network usage remains consistently the same all day until past 10.30 pm.

We were all told that shaping would ease off tonight, so let's keep watching, and report our findings tomorrow morning. See what the response is.

yup cant even download an update at 11:00 PM, shaped so bad the files fail, I see no improvement on the network whatsoever, barring the long easter weekend. Works perfectly with other ISP accounts

11pm, still 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P. Torrents still going at 5kB/s...

Update: 12am, no change.

Just gone midnight and still no change. Still at 12.5%/6.25%. I'm beginning to think the capacity upgrade was just a sick joke.
Will check back in tomorrow morning.

I have never seen Afrihost shape like this until this year (and i'm talking for years) and they've run out of excuses now in my opinion, we're not as stupid as they may think, time to come clean guys, whats the real issue here? Is the company in financial trouble? These are the lines we're starting to think along because you're not giving us the proper transparent answers. The proof is in the pudding, something is wrong here

We've been absolutely upfront about what is happening. We've ordered additional capacity, and we're only receiving it in instalments, and delayed at that. There is no question of us not having the money or the desire to effect the upgrades we've promised - in fact, we're making some pretty big commitments to our upstream providers in order to make sure that we have plenty of capacity to deliver the internet experience we want our clients to have. The problem here is nothing to do with any of those things, it literally comes down to delivery turnaround time for IPC, which is unfortunately hampered by issues which are out of our control.

Our long term plan is to make some more radical changes to this process to give us more freedom to optimise our network. If those plans do go through, we should never be in this situation, or at least not for this length of time.

The upgrade has definitely made a difference, though it was not as dramatic as we hoped. We had hoped to get our full order in order to give Business and Capped full expected performance, improve overall realtime services and to shape less and give clients a period of little to no shaping (Uncapped clients, that is). So for now, it's only shaping that is still quite present, but I do see that we are able to unshape (even though it's after midnight) and the network only sees pretty much full shaping by mid-morning - which is better but maybe not as dramatic as we'd have liked.

Hopefully Telkom will come through quickly for us and we can still deliver that awesome experience we've had in mind since this all started :(

From what I can see - shaping started to ease in the South well after midnight, so demand is consistent till pretty heavy till pretty late. Remember that this is just for shaping, what we're seeing is improved real time services across the board, whether shaped or unshaped - so we believe the upgrade has definitely improved the overall internet experience in the South.
