Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

I'm sorry that we're not able to unshape as quickly as we've done in the past. I do believe that once we've gotten the metrics we need to find that perfect balance, we'll have a better overall internet experience for our Uncapped clients.

Yes, but why is it getting earlier? And still continuing to as late as before (i.e. past 2 am). That indicates the network is getting more stretched not less.

Yes, correct. Your profile won't change unless you're actually connected and moving data :)

This is a serious shortfall that needs to be rectified. With IS you can use a capped account until your stars improve. With AH they are punishing you, then forcing you to endure the punishment.

That's not right.

Someone suggested, a while back in this thread, a QoS feature being placed in the ClientZone. I know that this is a huge task to implement, but if done properly, I think it could work very well and solve a lot of people's problems. I know it'd solve mine.

If we could, via the ClientZone, choose which services we wanted to give priority to at any given moment, we could in essence be in control of our own data. This is quite a nice ideal to move towards.

There could be buttons for prioritizing realtime, P2P and downloads and, for instance, when we choose to prioritize our P2P, if we want a download quickly, other services are shaped heavily (like the heavy shaping users are experiencing now for P2P), so then browsing would be slow, but it'd be our own doing. As soon as we wanted to change back, we could just press another button, and we could do so. Basically, users could just switch based on the usage they know they'll be doing, giving themselves the best experience tailored to their own specific needs.

I'm not sure just how possible that all is, but I genuinely believe that it should at least go through to management for consideration.

Yeah I suggested this :)

I think these are separate issues.

What I'm saying is that if you don't use your account - it will display the last shaping profile setting until you move data, at which point your profile is reassessed. So you could go from harshest to unshaped in a few minutes, based on the current demand and your usage patterns.

From what I remember of the IS system - if it still works that way - you got a star rating based on thresholds and you were on the setting until the 30 day window expired. Our system is dynamic and administered in realtime. We're just saying we don't adjust your profile if you're offline, because it will misreport to the shaper and make it believe it's reclaimed more bandwidth than it has in reality, and that could result in latency spikes while it tries to recover and bring demand under control.

Let me know if I'm confusing anyone here - it took me a while to get my head around this as well :)

Ok now I get it.

Maybe consider an hourly reassessment so that a client could monitor their profile and only put their AH account on their router then they see something they can live with.

We'd have to see how that would be possible without misreporting to the shaper. We tried a few things in the past and it ended up badly effecting overall network performance. I know it is something we'd like to have so clients know when they are unshaped and can plan accordingly.

Hope everyone decides to go away this long weekend again, could do with no shaping :D

Don't know is its been said yet...I have a Netgear router, and am able to do that myself in the router QoS Setup Menu. Perhaps look at your router setup?

I've got a Netgear router too, and I've seen the QoS settings but haven't ever been able to find out online how to use them. Surely that doesn't counter the P2P shaping from Afrihost?

No, it's not a way to circumvent AH shaping, its a way to prioritise on your own network, what uses how much of what is available to you. You can prioritise by application, LAN port, MAC address etc...

Also, you don't need a manual to figure out Netgear routers. On the left are the options, on the right it displays details of the options and their effect.

Just go into QoS and scope it out :)

That's a great suggestion to manage your local network - but it definitely wouldn't circumvent or affect inherent QoS on an Uncapped account - so not sure if it would add a lot of value. But definitely worth looking into. Probably also a great option to keep P2P usage down on your own home network to prioritise real time services.

What Blizzard is suggesting has absolutely NOTHING to do with your router. He is talking about Afrihost's QoS system....

But what would be the point of shaping yourself? Since it is clear that most people on uncapped are mainly concerned with p2p and downloads, if it was in their own hands, everyone would unshape it and since these protocols make up the majority of bandwidth, nothing would actually be achieved.

I call your bluff AfriMan, I know you've got all of the capacity, you just like watching us squirm ;)

I should not be restricting my P2P to prioritise my realtime services, as realtime is supposed to run unshaped right?
The reason for prioritising (for me anyway) is;

- Give certain devices (via LAN port or MAC reference) preference over others
- Give certain services preference over others

Your point being? I understand what Blizzard is saying, but if everyone had the right to setup their own AH QoS, AH would be dead in a few seconds, unless you are allowed to manage your AH QoS within limits predefined by AH. If that is the case, then it's exactly the same as doing it on your router, as you are still limited by AH QoS, and managin your own sub QoS to your preference.

But what would be the point of shaping yourself? Since it is clear that most people on uncapped are mainly concerned with p2p and downloads, if it was in their own hands, everyone would unshape it and since these protocols make up the majority of bandwidth, nothing would actually be achieved.

Most people are most probably on uncapped for P2P etc, but I have to maintain a balance between P2P, streaming, and home office utilisation, hence managing my QoS on my router.

Remember that if you are unshaped for a period, you could then contend on your own line for bandwidth between services and devices. So if you are a gamer, but your partner or room mate likes to torrent, you may end up getting latency and lag in your game, depending on how contention plays out. You may want to set QoS on your router to ensure that your realtime traffic gets more priority. We do have some QoS to achieve this, but at router level is probably going to be a lot more effective.

Methinks Afriman and Afriguy home lines are running realtime and non-realtime at full speed. Call it a company benefit if you wish

I wish. We use the same "off the shelf" products as everyone here. So we feel everyone's pain - truly :)

I've had no power at home for the last 36 hours - so even shaped internet would be a great improvement. Frantically charging every possible device I have right now before I leave the office :(
