Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Seriously Afriguy?
It is 12.5% HTTP download and 6.25% P2P download. Also I have the feeling that usually the 4Meg lines get shaped to 18.5% but if you have a 10Meg line its usually 12.5% (I have never seen 18.5%).

@Arksun: In terms of "But what is it like in general?" In the last 6 months (except March) I got shaped to 12.5% / 6.25% on 5 out of 7 days between ~5pm and 1am (my preferred online times).
Also, think about the impact: I can't even browse through a gallery with high resolution pics (but I can watch HD Youtube?) nor can I play Elder Scrolls Online because Afrihost detects the network code as P2P (answer from customer service was basically "yeah - we are not gonna do anything about that one").

I cancelled my home uncapped account.

All policies are standard across any products. So the profiles work exactly the same to be completely fair.

I'm battling with my torrents atm. fully unshaped but its not reflecting on my torrents.

1h20m gone and only 92 megs downloaded at an avg on 20 k/b

Are you running multiple torrents or only a single file. You sometimes have to stack up a few well seeded torrents (and force start all of them) to saturate your line.

Okay, so after a port reset speedtest upto 3.5Mbps again

However, NNTP looks like it is shaped at about the 200kb/s mark. Used to go at about 420kb/s

Green line is NNTP only, blue line is NNTP plus a youtube video,
One can clearly see that the line/account can go faster

If your line can go faster, then it wouldn't be us setting a limit on your traffic (especially if you are unshaped). Sounds like we need to collect all the cases where shaping "experience" seems to be mismatched with ClientZone reports and investigate whether the display update is delayed :(

@Afrihost, One quick question, lets theoretically say every one on AH suddenly switched to a business account and started to max their line speed on downloading. Would the network slowdown to a snails pace?

It would take tens of thousands of people to do that (more than voted for certain political parties) simultaneously. In theory, yes that is what would probably happen, becuase we'd have no room to shape Uncapped to manage the network. We'd then most likely need to look at other alternate routes (if possible) to optimise traffic until our upgrade arrive (which is on order anyway).

Very, very unlikely. Even with a few hundred people changing over, the effect would be so minimal it wouldn't really reflect at all.

It's odd that NNTP is not being included in your shaped services, it definitely should. So something weird going on here anyway. It could be that ClientZone isn't displaying the correct info - there have been a few rollouts of updates recently so it could be there :(

In the few months that I've been with AfriHost NNTP was never shaped, always full speed. And it's not like I'm raping the line, projected monthly usage of about 140gb. Which isn't that much on a 4mbps line

NNTP is definitely a shaped service, but I've see a few people report that they get full speed even when shaped. Could be something about the nature of news traffic that it occasionally slips the shaping net.

Well then something is wrong with the technical implementation of these profiles. I check my shaping status at least twice a day (by the way, 12.5%/6.25% since yesterday afternoon, even early in the morning and right now...). So over the last 6 months I have checked over 300 times. I saw a few occasions of 75%, 50% and 25%, usually just shortly before and after a 12.5% cap, but, if it is shaped, 9.5 out of 10 times its 12.5% and I never once saw a 18.5%. However, very often when I see 12.5%/6.25% I see other people on the forum with 4Meg line reporting 18.5%. I'm just a bit pissed that you guys tell people here that the very worst case is 12.5% if in fact it is the norm most evenings during the last 6 months - this is misrepresentation.

Seems it is the same case with me as with Chris83 im also on 12.5/6.25 during the day, everyday. And i'm using a measly 200 gigs avg on a 10m line

I'm sorry that this is contributing to a poor experience for you. I do believe that our only intention is to be as transparent about how our network performance and demand affect clients directly. We don't hard shape the network according to set hours, but remember that when you track behaviour accross hundreds of thousands of clients, it will probably seem pretty rigid overall.

Remember that we're also expecting massive upgrades on our two biggest regions very soon, and the internet experience will be very different thereafter. Shaping will always play it's role, but we hope to have it more in line with our vision for Uncapped performance/experience.

We don't use set thresholds for shaping, it's always dependant on the demand on the network and how we are able to allocate available resources. Once we get the upgrade we're expecting, this should change significantly.

So what you're telling me is that if one flappy jacky decides to pull 1000 gigs my total internet experience needs to suffer because of someone else? I have been with you guys for more than 4 years now and i have sat though a lot of when this happens etc. All i want is to get home enjoy streaming which i daily do and not be slowed to oblivion because another guy is greedy.

+1 on that. My data for each month amounts to 200GB at the extreme max. Just want to hit play and sit back and relax, not sif through links to get one that works good.

We don't punish anyone, our shaping is there to keep the network running smoothly.
Remember that when your account is shaped, realtime is left un-touched. Strange to see you're battling with streaming, where may be another issue here :(

Shaping doesn't affect streaming at all.

I personally feel the issue lies with Mtn. AfriMan received my tests that I did last night with Mweb and both Afrihost accounts and the evidence speaks for itself, as all 3 tests with the 3 ISP accounts were done on the same ADSL line with the same router etc.... With mweb the video started instantly with no buffer, unfortunately with my 2 AH accounts it buffered for 5 seconds when I started the video, played for 3, buffered for 3 repeat. So not entirely your fault, rather the people that provides bandwidth to you, just my opinion as i see it. :)

Does it improve when you use a turbo?

You know what's awesome? get home early on a Friday afternoon and click on client zone to see no shaping being applied.

:D
