Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Well, I can also be clever with words... P2P might be unblocked, but it's pretty much unusable, no one can deny that, just look back a few pages in this very thread! Secondly, Downloads are NOT really possible for pretty much 2 thirds of the day, plus it's a "Potential" 9 hours, might be more, might be less... if it's less than 8 hours it's actually more than 2 thirds of your day... Don't try and bullsh*t us dude, that's not good business practice!

If you get something like cloudload.com you will have a minimum download speed of 80KB/s more or less via HTTP and a download manager. Again want 24/7 full speed, go business or capped.

Seriously, this is the std home uncapped package, WTF do you expect? I am also one of those browsers/gamers/streamers, so the odd GB I will download in 2 months, I have NO ISSUES with this product.

Some of us need to download IOS updates, or do Windows updates, or stream netFlix. The account used to be good, and was able to provide that with reasonable shaping being applied. Being limited to 10% of your line? No, that is bull****.

As for their business accounts, I had a 10Mb business which I cancelled. It still doesn't perform like their capped accounts even if they say it's from the same data pool.

I'm looking for other ISPs, AH will get my R1400 a month again when they provide the service I expect, which should at least equal what I can get from other ISPs for the same amount of money.

I am on the same shaping as you and can do everything perfect. My whole household is on Netflix, I play Defiance etc.... No issues. Just saying. Also might it be rooter related? When I had the on the shelf router, being Gigabyte, Netgear etc do everything it was pretty ***, had to restart 2 times a day to get something decent. When I did the Billion 1 port modem, Rb750 and wifi with DHCP disabled I never had issues again.

FYI my data for May. 164.16GB down and 16.25GB up. Now what really get's me is iv'e seen people complai that they can't even do 50GB or 100GB of data in x month. What type of data? Hell knows, I managed that data without breaking a sweat on streaming, browsing and gaming. Sorry not going off on you, just people expecting a 4mbps unshaped account under R400.

I am paying for a 20Mb line so over 1300 per month. 10% of my linespeef with 48Gb used so far.

My router is fine, my exchange is fine as it is used for FTTH, changing to another ISP confirms it.

Still, you are expecting that your bundled R1397 20mbps ADSL perform the same as the business 20mbps at Cost R1897 PM (Incl. VAT) data only. Is this really fair to expect a fully unshaped service for home accounts? Regarding HTTP downloads, if the users did not use HTTP to get their downloads, which I assume they raped it 24/7 if they could, then our HTTP would not fall under the shaping policy. But lets say Afrihost decides the hell with it and opens up all the taps, a week or 2 later you will be back here saying you are unshaped, but can barely do 100KB/s on your 20mbps connection. Not sure why other people have buffer issues on youtube or Netflix, but for my part everything works like it should except for downloads. Maybe some Afrihost users are effected differently than I am, not sure.

I never said I expect full line speed all day all night, but you really expect anyone to be happy having 10% of their line speed at 11pm at night? Afrihost have turned sour, there are other ISPs that offer a much better value than they are at the moment.

1. Users used other methods to download illegal content via the HTTP protocol, thus that also had to be shaped.

2. If Afrihost allowed EVERYONE on their Network 24/7 unshaped data, the Network would fall over, it HAS to be managed, even when over congested, even when testing new methods that can give us better real-time service.

3. You said the account used to be good, but now you only get 10% of your 20mbps speed. I said my real-time service was and always has been on full speed, even on the worst shaping, so I wonder under what category that 10% falls under.

4. I saw people that was on the same shaping policy as me that could barely browse, so I wondered if there was something wrong with their account maybe as I did not have the same simptons on my account. Why I am wondering about your 10% line speed.

And not to mention that Afrihost's home uncapped package is one of the most expensive in the market, people are going to feel like they've been swindled.

I think if they are planning to keep this intense shaping in place, they should rebrand this package. As some sort of "browse 'n stream' account. Because streaming and browsing parts are working really well.

Exactly, for someone like myself who barely torrents or use news servers I don't really see a issue. But I can agree, if they cut the price by R50 at least and use different wording here and there then there would be less complaints. I did not think the home uncapped package was so expensive though. Other ISP's I looked at had the 10 day rolling window thing and had a similar price back then, admittedly I have not compared prices in a while.

I would love to know how the shaping is "dynamic" when the unshaped window closes at exactly the same time every day, and to the same level. You cannot convince me that the network is this heavily taxed at 07:00 (time at which shaping was applied again) in the morning:



I have been shaped at this level for 4 months now.... the rate is always the same, and for 20 hours every day. Even the rate of shaping is incorrect, as I cannot even browse properly on a 10MB line during the day (at night it's much worse). The max. throughput on any form of download (http) is 50KB/s and it has to be multi-threaded to achieve that speed. Line becomes choppy/intermittent, and is mostly unusable. Youtube stutters/buffers every 10 seconds on 240p :wtf:

Are we talking about the same home uncapped product where a few pages back in the thread we were told it compares to "Premium" packages on other ISP's? Those other "premium" packages are not subject to live network testing and limited windows where you're allowed to download! Just because YOU dont have a problem with the product doesn't mean there isn't something fundamentally wrong with it...

I do honestly regret losing any clients. I would like to think that we offer fair value products to meet any client's needs, but one of the main reasons we do month to month agreements is that we never want to lock our clients into a service they are not happy with.

If you have made the decision to move away, the best I can do is wish you the best of luck. If you don't find what you're looking for out there, maybe we'll see you again in the future

I think you and AfriGuy are busy working on this. We'll do our best to determine whether there is shaping acting on the traffic, or if there is a QoS issue which affects traffic when you download.

One thing to remember is that shaping affects throughput, not latency/lag. So even a shaped service should not experience lag unless it's very bandwidth hungry, which gaming generally is not. So if no other services are running, it's vert strange indeed

Going to cancel my line and 20Mb account end of this month if this continues.

Sorry AH but I aint got time to pay you to test your network, especially not if you shape proper legitimate downloads from Microsoft or Apple.

The idea behind the testing we're doing is to provide a better experience for clients. Also, we think that if this works out, we can manage demand better and clients will get a more consistent experience.

Actually, if you go back and read my posts, my problem is with streaming... I dont care much for downloading actually, but it's all about principals, something you're clearly not getting! When I first joined Afrihost, the view on shaping for home uncapped was "We will try our best to NEVER shape you", then it went to "We will only shape you when the network is busy" to "We'll shape you heavily for 2 thirds of the day".... After having been a customer for a while, this really irks me! What p*sses me off though, is this hasn't been clearly communicated AT ALL and the majority of people are left fckn clueless as to why the connection they pay very good money for is all of a sudden not doing what they originally signed up for a few months/years ago.... so honestly dude, take a step back, stop being a fan boy, and let people air their opinions freely in an open forum without ridicule and aggressive defence tactics.

jup I know, but the thing is nothing els was running, our house hold has a strict agreement to not download or use excessive bandwidth between the times of 5pm and 11pm as we all play games or stream.

and I played dota just after I did all that tests, like I said as well the issues was resolved when I swapped capped to other accounts

I'm glad I am not alone. Afrihost has really been good to me up until about 4 months ago. But this has to end.

Our aim is to improve your experience, and I know that usually when we set our minds to something like this we come out on the right side of these issues. From what I am seeing, Uncapped is now delivering the kind of experience we envision for the product. Excellent and consistent realtime performance at all times, with a good portion of time where clients can do downloads and P2P where they are less shaped (or unshaped) to get as much data as they want. We'll obviously tweak here and there to find the best possible balance, but it feels like this could be a good thing overall. But let me just remind everyone that it's not necessarily the way we'll go, this what we're doing for now to see what could work, and what won't.
