What's the difference between watching a video on youtube or netflix, and watching a video downloaded from a torrent at the same quality?
Except that if you want to watch it again, you need to stream it again on youtube while you'd still have the torrent...

The effect on the network is very different because of the number of threads. And also the nature of streaming is that it bursts and is more spread out, where downloads will demand consistent throughput at maximum.

Ok replace torrent with seedbox then?
And Netflix 720p will flatten a 4 meg line consistently. Not sporadically.

I think realistically both involve different types of online behaviour. That's why we're saying they require different kinds of products to meet the individual client's preference.

MAN that cat, I have one that looks exactly like that with a black pirate patch on one eye, kept his baby face lol. Can't help but to think of him every time I see your profile pic hehe.

The way AH shape Home Uncapped accounts during business hours is like nuking a little town near the US/Mexico border to get rid of its zombie infected inhabitants.

Remember that after 10pm we do dynamic unshaping (or shaping) based on demand. We are looking into what can be done to achieve maximum bandwidth usage after 10pm. Ideally, we want to max the network out 24 hours a day, so it's definitely also in our interest to allow everyone to get as much data as possible off-peak.

But this shaping is only now for this whole "testing" thing right, as in...this isn't going to be permanent? If this is permanent, then that's BS. Home Uncapped will go from the golden child of ADSL to the dregs & pits reserved for MWEB packages.

Then you're not watching your network graphs. My streaming always spikes as the buffer gets full.

Pretty flat at 420KB/sec to be honest. (But not on Afrihost, on an ISP with some international packet loss issues, and on a 10mb line, so maybe it would be bursting 10 then pausing... .but it's not)

I don't know what changes will be implemented finally and which ones won't. I think if we can find a way to make performance as good as we expect, especially on realtime, then we could implement a version of this kind of shaping. Ultimately, dynamic shaping was leading to contention during peak periods and performance was not what it should have been, so we're seeing vast improvement in general at the moment. But things could change according to what we see in terms of overall performance and client feedback.

I have bad feelings that the whole "testing" thing is permanent :( I'm leaving AH at the end of this month cos I hate that they shape all kinds of legitimate HTTP downloads (including Windows Updates/Microsoft.com) between 7am and 12AM EVERY DAY.

I almost wanted to ask why don't you guys join a Wug for the Linux iso's, but yeah it is not available everywhere.

Or upgrade to business.

I actually think maybe they should creating a "downloaders" addon that makes sure that shaping doesn't get less than 50% for example. That way it can still be cheaper than business.

At most R100 for the extra service, that can work.

There's still room for suggestions, so we'll explore any viable ideas. If we can keep the product simple and have it perform consistently, then we'd be happy.

When is the price revision due for your capped accounts?

We've just done double data, so I don't think we'll change our prices. Unless we decide to extend Double Data or make the offer permanent.

That's what I meant. the double data is awesome.

/prays its extended or made permanent :Dx

HTTP browsing traffic should not be shaped, except for anything which is classified as a download. If your overall experience is poor, we'll need to run some tests and see what exactly is not performing as it should :(

Okay, so what is your criteria for HTTP traffic to be classified as a "download"?
