Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Like I said it's not about running out of capacity. We want to maximise the use of the network at all times, this is in both our clients interests and our own. If we can work on giving more bandwidth back to clients as quickly as possible so they can be less shaped or unshaped as quickly after 10pm as possible, then they can get more benefit from the IPC downtime as possible.

What does this mean?

So what I'm saying here is that I am seeing that while some people are shaped after 10pm, I think we have enough capacity at that time for them to be less shaped or unshaped, becuase the demand has dropped off. So we are looking at making the system more responsive, so that we can achieve this. Obviously this is difficult for a system managing hundreds of thousands of users in realtime, so it takes careful calibration. But I do believe that if we can achieve this, we can deliver a better overall experience.

and yet demand only drops off after 3am, allowing you to unshape for 4 hours then it's back to max shaping again, that says to me that you are maxing out 20 of the 24 hours.

The latest I've seen anyone be unshaped is 2am, which I still think we can improve on. I don't know the complexities of the system, but studying the graphs, I believe that this can be achieved.

That's not very reassuring :(

We're totally missing each other here. I am saying, that from the reports, I am seeing that we COULD unshape or shape less faster, to allow people to download more, and see that much earlier than 3am. Also to be fair, only some users will see that shaping change as late as 2am. Lots of users are already being unshaped a lot earlier, but I do believe we can do better than this and make it happen faster.

Turbocharge your shaper then :D If you expect people to wait for witching hours to download, then it's not fair to hold back after 12am.

After I don't how many pages of complaining, Afrihost are still sticking to their guns.

They obviously feel they're on to a winning formula here, and the hints that Afriman has been dropping here lately, that their current testing is having favourable results, so the shaping is here to stay. And no amount of forum bashing is going to fix that.

So I say, vote with your wallets. Cancel your home uncapped, and leave the Afrihost network completely. Educate your friends and family about the "testing" on home uncapped accounts, and advise them to leave as well. There are plenty of other ISPs that will gladly take your money.

We do believe that we are on the right track to offering a good Uncapped experience. From chatting to our team, I've learned that from the feedback on this forum, we are tweaking the unshaping already to try to deliver the best value to clients. We were previously seeing most clients shaping relieved by only around midnight, but we've now tweaked the system to have most clients less shaped or unshaped as early as 10:30 or 11pm. There are still some clients with high usage patterns who are only seeing their shaping removed by 2am or so, but they would still probably see lighter shaping throughout the evening.

We're also analysing regional networks for the best performance based on usage trends. We've noticed that the South seems to peak and drop off at different times so we've adjusted the shaping to be relieved later in the evening, starting closer to 11pm, and we're also instituting shaping later in the morning, at around 8am. So South users have the same window to be dynamically unshaped (or shaped if demand is high).

Having said that, it should only really be very heavy users seeing their accounts still shaped after midnight. So I'm happy to check your profiled on a case by case basis to see if the system is acting as it should to ensure you're getting the best experience we can give you.

I'm sure a number of people will appreciate this. I'm not entirely sure what qualifies as "heavy usage", so knowing that, whether the shaping I see on my account is fair based on that, and what to do to change my shaping category should I wish to be unshaped earlier in the day, would really help make my internet experience more manageable and enjoyable.

Wow, finally you guys are starting to do something about this fiasco. Starting to feel the sting of all the cancellations lately are we...

Don't fall for it - they are playing us
About 6 hours to cancel - to be effective for month end

After 12pm they go back to heavy shaping for another month

Well - let's see if this "miraculous" easing off on the shaping is going to last past midnite and the rest of the week

If so, I'll be damned ;-)

You're falling for it! 3am tomorrow morning - 6% and 12,5%, in other words 14Kb on every thing! :erm:
