Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Is anyone else unable to connect, I have had no internet (ADSL) for a while now.. I'm in CT northern suburbs

Me too. CT CBD. Started to develop problems last night. Since then I've had very erratic symptoms - the line will come and go, briefly returning to acceptable performance, and then either slowing down to the point where it's unusable, or seems completely offline. It also seems to depend on what I'm doing - so, if web browsing seems to be in an acceptable state for a moment, I can get it to break by opening a torrent client, even if the client is throttled to 5kbps download speed, with only one outgoing connection. As soon as I do that, web browsing basically stops working across my whole network. An encrypted VPN connection, however, seems to be the healthiest traffic I currently have. Even when everything else is poked, the VPN can sometimes still achieve near line-speed. But sometimes it too succumbs - like now, when it's stopped completely.

The helpline has a message up about DNS issues, which I guess might sort of explain some of the inconsistency I'm seeing (the VPN will very rarely need to be doing any lookups). They suggest you make sure you're not assigning a static IP, and restart your router. Which I've done, and I'm sure you have too. But the helpline itself is closed - 3pm on Saturdays. Joy.

Agree...line would be fine...then lose connection or site access. 15min later all good again. Makes gaming or streaming annoying.

Switched to WA account till this is sorted.

Yup - Agree with the above two posters. I can load Google and Facebook fine - but nothing else really. I did get onto the Afrihost site - but they are showing green.

Swopping to my backup ISP (why do we need such a concept really?) - things are working fine.

A simple tracert to say News24.com - does work - but not a chance will the site itself load. -oh well woopeee for backup ISP.

Same problem here in the northern suburbs of CT. 99.9% of websites don't load, not even their own homepage. I had some luck when using https (YouTube and Facebook load with no problems), but other than that I only get timeout errors. Has been going on since at least 16:00. AFAIK they haven't acknowledged anything on their page and the call centre plays a message regarding DNS - doesn't even apply to me as I'm using unotelly...

Same problem here. Most websites won't load. Facebook, YouTube and Google will load sometimes... Oh and the webafrica site worked long enough for me to grab a free 2gb account.

Could someone update me on Afrihost's current streaming performance? Has it improved since their last upgrade? Or is streaming as poopy as it always was on the MTN backbone?

Not that I am with AH or any other ADSL ISP anymore. Currently using the mtn uncapped 3GB 256kbps product. My wife can stream Netflix in SD quality on 40KB/s with about 2 buffers max that lasts a minute each on a 30min show. Mtn not that bad in my eyes currently. :D

I am having the same problem as the above posters. I can only access https websites so Facebook and online banking all works even YouTube if i use https in front of web address, otherwise all normall http websites don't load.

Problem still ongoing for me, no mention on afrihost website as to what the problem is and that more than 14hrs after I first experienced it.
I find it really shocking that they don't acknowledge that they have a major problem on their network and don't keep customers updated.

Hi im also stuck with same problem. Certain websites time out but when i use a different isp it works no problems. Thus it can only be an afrihost issue in Cape Town. I am so frustrated with this horse crap we get as service. Every week a new issue.... i presume they will blame it on load shedding....

350+ ping ingame is old now ...... how long am I going to be strung along by promises I wonder

Seems to be working again, for me at least.
Funny thing is it started working again at the same time they announced the problem on facebook and their network status page on afrihost.

Hi guys

I'm sincerely sorry about the lack of feedback here, I understand that the South IPC has been an issue since yesterday.
We are working hard on getting this sorted out - I'll have any updates posted here as soon as they're available.

Well then.

Despite the hassles caused by the DNS ballsup, my uncapped account has been performing, dare I say it, pretty amazing O_o.

Also - since there has been little shaping the Mumble experience has been perfect as well.

Kudos.

Morning Guys!

My apologies for the connectivity issues that many of our Cape users experienced over the weekend, the issues was caused by the system that handles the caching for internet traffic, it basically conked out and caused significant issues with internet traffic. HTTPS traffic was not handled by the affected system, which is why you would have seen some traffic working.

If you guys have any questions please let me know here or via PM.

Thanks!
