Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

That doesn't sound right, from what I can see people we're being unshaped by around 22:00, but the heaviest users were unshaped around 1:30am. Depend on how much data you are using I guess.

You can drop me a PM and I'll take a look at this for you.

YGPM :)

Gaming is once again being shaped...

And what's even worse is that realtime services like youtube or spotify or any streaming service really will just disconnect me every single time.

It's currently 2am in the morning and I've not been able to do anything since 6pm, which has been going on for a month now. And yes, the moment shaping is removed from my account I can both play smoothly and watch youtube at the same time. I gave you high praise for fixing it so fast last time but it's clear that it was simply a band aid fix and that these problems will keep arising.

We start unshaping clients as early as possible, but remember that it still depends on demand. So we may only be able to unshape the lightest users and not the heavier users - it really depends on your usage profile and patterns. I usually see unshaping starting around 10pm but sometimes the very heaviest users are unshaped only after midnight. It is completely controlled by realtime demand at any point in time.

Sorry to hear that you're battling with this (and also that my inbox is full, I have cleared out some old messages now)

We haven't made any policy changes to the network at all since last year. Once we had everything working as efficiently as possible, we've pretty much left things at the state where they were working well.

We'll need to run some tests to confirm whether this is due to shaping, becuase YouTube should definitely not be shaped and is not showing that way when I test with an Uncapped and shaped account (or the last time I did, at least).

Would you be willing to run the tests with me?

I usually see unshaping starting around 10pm but sometimes the very heaviest users are unshaped only after midnight. It is completely controlled by realtime demand at any point in time.

So what do you consider a heavy user on a 10mb account, because according to my profile my daily usage is 4GB. In a month 130GB. Remember this is a 10m account.

It depends on the demand, so if there is very high demand, there is no way to predict when a user will be unshaped, based on a total or threshold, but we can only say that we unshape from the lightest to heaviest users. But that determination is not just based on a total, it's how much data you use, how quickly you use it, etc.

All I know is that last time with the gaming side I had the exact same problem and it was around the iOS update and before the capacity upgrade in the south. The representative informed me that because the demand was higher than usual some services were wrongly classified as non realtime. Those services were simply re-added to that list and my line was running smoothly in gaming within a day.

And I have no speed problems with youtube loading slowly. Simply that whenever I use it, it would bring some of the network to a halt (gaming servers dc and the clientzone site wont load) and only starts working again when I close youtube.

But yeah, I'll run some tests. Sending a pm now

I think that initial answer was a bit misleading. When the update we saw a dramatic increase in demand. So accelerated our plans to upgrade capacity but in the meantime we found that there were some traffic types not being as well shaped as they could be to make overall shaping more efficient. So P2P traffic not being shaped on HTTPS, and that type of thing was a focus until we could get more capacity to maximise the resources we had. We did have an issue later in the year when an update caused some of our custom classifications to be redone and this also took a short while to resolve.

I can't see how running YouTube would kill your network (especially if it's not working and drawing bandwidth). Sounds to me like there is something else going on the network :(

The youtube issue isnt my main concern here. The fact that I am unable to play in a group enviroment while shaped on the client page (Just like last time) is still very much an issue on your side and I would appreciate it if you atleast took the time to look into that before blowing it off.

Because again, this problem only occurs when my account is shaped. After that it plays perfectly so it can't be a problem with my line.

List of server IP addresses can be found at: http://www.arrstatus.com/

I've just replied to your PM. We'll get some tests going and then confirm from there when we can replicate your experience.

Why is the AH mail giving a "Service is not currently available" message the whole day? It's someones main address after we switched to AH and now they can't get access

Which mail service are they using? Is it a free Afrihost address attached to a DSL product, and if so is that product still active and not cancelled or suspended?

Please PM me and I'll take a look :(

11:38pm on a Friday and the network is still completely shaped. I have a feeling it's going to be like last week where I was shaped at 3am still. Best part is that Turbocharge has been activated yet my YouTube and downloads are at a standstill. Wow.

Think AH has reached that threshold point they did the last time round a few months ago when things were seriously bad shaping wise. It's a matter of balancing out usage until it's worth it for them to upgrade capacity. Neverending story with all uncapped products IMO. I just stick it out for better days. Right now P2P is almost barely usable but hey for me at least it seems real time services are still working fine.

it's now 1am .......

YouTube stuttering like a madman. Why YT has to be shaped at 1am is beyond me.
