Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Im not going to rant or anything, but for the past 3 days something feels wrong.

Connection keeps going to full speed and then dies without losing sync or disconnecting and then back up to full speed.

YT and browsing are slow.

So Afriman, I'm using that 10GB Capped you set up. For some reason I'm getting 270ms to Europe? Did you guys change your route to Europe?

Which game or service in particular are you having issues with? I just want to make sure we are covering all the possible games and services.

Can you guys check the eu.battle.net services for wow, diablo3, hearthstone, starcraft 2. During the day I cant get into those games, steam is working again (thanks for that).

When logging into the battle.net desktop app the connection keeps getting dropped in the afternoons(3.30pm+), but in the morning (5-6am) when I try, you can log into all of the services without any issues.

I've noticed that since Telkom implemented their new system to manage our adsl lines automatically, my internet connection will 'freeze' for a few minutes , no sync or disconnection issues then it comes back after a few minutes... I don't think the fault is on Afrihosts side.

:(

We've noticed a few clients report the exact same thing, the actual authenticated session doesn't drop, but the internet connection freezes for a few moments before allowing throughput again.

From what we've been able to peace together this does appear to be Telkom's new DSMS analyzing the ADSL line and then making changes and tweaks to the ADSL line. Apparently this is normal - according to Telkom - and your line should improve drastically after that.

Not that I am aware of, most of the changes and tweaks we're making are on the local bandwidth management.

Are you consistently getting those latencies to Europe?

I didn't get a response about my question on shaping. Google and other websites are just timing out, that's not shaping, our connection may aswell just be tuned off instead. My brother's are taking online courses which requires streaming, when i called Afrihost about signing up with them, i told them our circumstances and that we will use quite a bit of data, they told me we would then be shaped but real-time services would not be. That doesn't seem to be the case . Is this type of shaping normal?

No it's fine now. Very weird. Even my ping to Russian servers were higher from 250-270 normally, to 330. But only last night for about 4 hours. This morning it was fine.

Apologies, it looks like I missed your post entirely. :(

Our Shaping will ONLY affect your P2P and HTTP downloads, you shouldn't be seeing websites timing out or being inaccessible.

Can you check what your current DNS settings are on your modem?

Is Afrihost now throttling aka shaping direct downloads too? Is the uncapped ADSL meant for browsing only? WTF!

Why Afrihost? You do realise that you are one the more expensive ISPs now....

P2P and HTTP downloads have always been shaped depending on our network demand. That is specifically why we've included TurboCharge that will let you unshape your account to let you download critical files.

The setting for DNS is: Obtain DNS info from a WAN interface

The setting for DNS is: Obtain DNS info from a WAN interface

Can you quickly set it to manual, then use the following:
Primary DNS: 196.7.7.7
Secondary DNS: 8.8.8.8

I just need to check if this is perhaps DNS related.

Thanks for the reply but with respect to HTTP downloads, this was not the case before especially during the day. Has something changed at your end? Afrihost was working well, especially after your CEO's acknowledgement late last year of the poor state of affairs. However in the past few days its become like Telkom.

Alas, in my opinion TurboCharge is a gimmick to extract more cash from your customers who currently pay either the 3rd or 4th highest rates for uncapped ADSL.

Less focus on mobile data and more on your ADSL customers please.

HTTP downloads are supposed to be shaped, I think at some times the shaping on these types of downloads was not effective, which was why you were probably getting the higher speeds.

We shape P2P and HTTP downloads aggressively during periods of high demand so that we don't have to shape real-time services - gaming, browsing, streaming - at all on the Uncapped accounts.
