Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Google has been terrible esp between 7-9pm every night. this is with multiple users reporting this problem...Is AH not looking at it at all - which i'll be very surprised about instead of waiting for PMs? I've been a massive supporter of AH regardless of its issues recently but the google thing is getting to that last straw. Fact the AH came 2nd last in the Best ADSL poll speaks for itself...

We're definitely working on the bigger picture to have the overall performance pulled up from where it is at the moment.
Have you run any troubleshooting with our team to try and ease any issues at all?

Nope...have had google issues recently especially at night. Read this thread and assumed AH would attend to it. The issues get better either in the morning or after around 9pm. Bigger picture is great but can't get any feedback from a simple google search is the most frustrating experience.

Fully understand that it's frustrating. Would you be able to post any results here when you see the issues arise?
Also, have you tried switching around your DNS servers to see if this helps?

YouTube definitely isn't shaped but there seem to be a few reports of poor performance, and I also struggled a bit with Google Drive last night. From here in the office it seems perfect (probably becuase of our fibre connection).

YouTube seemed fine for me when I used it briefly though :(

YouTube is definitely being shaped on my end. Even now, with no other internet usage, I load a video and the line just caps at 30kbps (very neat line on my net graph). I really don't know how to prove this since a speed test caps my line to 4Mb fine. browsing is OK but it doesn't use much anyways, but when I load a YouTube video the video just doesn't load faster than 30kbps...

Maybe it's seeing YouTube as a different protocol? (very confused)

I honestly doubt this is related to shaping. What happens when you try and turbocharge you session?

A flatine is shaping or throttling, it is not contention. If it was "contention" it would spike. Either QoS is being applied at your router or network, or at the ISP level.

YouTube buffers like crazy but the minute a TC is used, it speed loads. I could understand the downloads being shaped a while back but since that understanding, gaming and streaming is shaped and downloads are shaped 20 hours of a day at the very least. Didn't want the hassle of moving to yet another ISP but it has to be done :(

Just want to confirm that TC = Turbocharge? If so, that's a little concerning.

Humour me and tell me the browser you are using?

I'm guessing Chrome. Please switch to FF and use the Flash based player. Just give that a test quick.

aye, TC - TurboCharge. If the problem could be looked into and found and fixed, I'd have the loyalty to stick around because hey, issues happen. But the general feedback is that all us experiencing it are crazy and there is no problem, that's what has grated my carrot

That's very strange. YouTube is definitely seen as a realtime service so shouldn't be shaped.
Could you drop me a PM with your DSL username so we can run through a few options there?

Have you tried the shaper tests. They take a while to run, but seem accurate with the performance I see.

Ding ding ding. You genius. Just installed and tried it on FF and videos load perfectly...

Did some Googling as well, and some solutions were:
  • Disable Ad-block (did not work)
  • Disable "Use hardware acceleration when available" under advanced settings (worked)

So I disabled "Use hardware acceleration when available", videos loaded perfectly. Then re-enabled it and videos are still loading perfectly, which to me is kind of odd.

At least now I know that the problem was on my end.

Thanks for the help.

A pleasure. I had that same damn problem. Sometime in chrome using html 5 player the speeds would be capped...in FF they run 100%. Then sometimes those SAME vids would work perfectly in Chrome.

So strange. Glad it helped :)

Woohoo, glad you got a fix :)
Will keep this in mind for other peeps asking about similar problems.

That is most people are experiencing, they palm you off until you get tired and stop emailing them.

As much as Afri* will tell us how they are improving their support, it's been the same old excuses that's been going on even longer than their network issues.

They are South Africa's Bait and Switch ISP.

My god. All I see is you moan and bitch, are you even an afrihost client? If not, get out of here. Some of us enjoy talking here and your trolling is really &%*$ing me off.

With that aside, I saw a large spike in ping last night across WA, Afrihost, as well as MWeb, and all of them had comparable pings. Afrihost was a little higher, but I will not say it was an Afrihost problem as all my accounts did it. I will PM you AfriHeros and if you can take a look that will rock :)

HOOAH!
