Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

At the time I did seem to get more of a response out of Internet Explorer of all things. Even tried a reinstall of Chrome but that didn't help either. Didn't try any other browsers.

Yes... Not sure at all what is going on with Chrome, Firefox and Opera seems to be running fine at the moment. Last I heard Google was investigating from their side.

Shaped once again on a public holiday :( 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P for the rest of the day.

Its really sad that Afrihost doesn't have enough IPC even on public holidays to ease the shaping. I know that this happens because of load and contention, but it feels like its getting worse, and the shaping is much more aggressive. And it feels like that Afrihost is really okay with shaping their clients for ~ 18 hours a day, since there is no mention of actually trying to fix it.

I've been a loyal client for 5 years now, but the uncapped account has really become useless. I can't work at home with it, and I can't play games online with it (I still get tons of packet losses that disappear if I try another ISP). Afrihost coming second to last on the Best ISP poll was a wake up call for me. There is no attempt to fix any problems, and they seem quite happy to be mediocre.

I think this will be the last month for me, my clients and my business. Time to look at Axxess and CrystalWeb.

Your pings are still pathetic.. Come on guys I don't have any other options so PLEASE do something. It's a goddamn public holiday! Oh and this is on your "Premium Unshaped" Capped bandwidth. So clearly your terrible shaping system isn't the only thing not performing properly.

Why should I have to pay for this poor service? You guys keep selling us crap about how you're trying to do something and if you are you have the most incompetent people trying to do something.

..... Yea it's time to just move and leave the frustration behind. Your post mirrors my (and I think a ton of other customers) feelings lately. Fine and well to say that they shape on network load but everyone and his cousin can see it's hard set 18+ hours per day shaping now, it never relaxes. And then the shaping of games and streaming just to further irritate :(

Youtube is being shaped to oblivion on a public holiday o.O wtf
..... up and down for me too

Thing is it's not in my power to move, so all I can do is bitch and moan at a bunch of twats who don't actually care.

So I understand that in CMD you can do a tracert command and it will throw out hops and basically show you the route it takes. I am having a problem with my ADSL and Im not sure what the problem is.... I ran several tracert's and dont understand but the 2nd hops always shows as timed out. so my question is, does anyone know what the hops indicate / mean? eg. 1st hop = router, 2 nd hop = ??? and so on... Im not sure if the problem is my router or not, I have a Netgear DGN2000 and this problem started a few weeks ago when they started load shedding. I am able to browse the net and so on but dew to the trace route results its a concern... Please HELP! I search the net and came up with nothing hence my question to this forum

From what I understand the second hop is not allowed to be pinged (blocked by Telkom). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I also time out on the second hop. I have a Dlink Router.

You can ping 155.239.255.250 another IP for your exchange, Will give you more insight whether it is exchange congestion or not.

Just an update:

I have been experiencing slow speeds and packet loss for a couple of months now (Especially on google services like youtube, drive, etc.).

I PM'd the reps on this site and received no feedback. Subsequent to my PM, I logged a couple of faults through the Afrihost Clientzone - I tried to explained the problem and provided pingplotter data indicating the extreme amounts of packet loss I was experiencing. The data shows that the packet loss starts on/after the third hop on the MTN network. Here and there I experience some loss on the second hop, but 99% is from hop 3 onwards.

Naturally, Afrihost fed me the usual drivel about its not the Afrihost network (I think it is), please remove the adsl filter (I don't use one), you are currently 18% shaped - try using turbocharge (I have done this - still no change), my account has been checked and is fine (It is not fine), etc. I pointed out that all these solutions were already tried and tested without any luck, the issue still remains. I further requested that this be escalated to the "network specialists".

On 15 April 2015 I was told the issue had been escalated to the specialists - I have had no feedback on the problem since then.
I was further asked to run speed tests with different accounts - The issue as I described it was not about latency or speed, it was packet loss to specific websites. If the issue is a shaping issue on the Afrihost network (As it seems to be), these tests would be frivolous. To do these tests are utterly a waste of my time, and quite frankly pisses me off as Afrihost are not looking at the issue in front of them.

I have been running some tests with my VPN service recently and it is interesting to note that as soon as I connect with my VPN service all the previously experienced packet loss disappears. This leads me to believe that there is indeed an issue with the Afrihost shaping protocol/service and that my VPN in bypassing this.

I have subsequently cancelled my account with Afrihost as their support is too useless to sort out the issue.
I cannot afford to waste any more time sorting out an issue which I have no control over.

Good luck to the rest of you on this forum.

Update #2:

My Afrihost account was deactivated on 1 May 2015. I have been using Crystal Web's uncapped service since then.
For the record, I am no longer experiencing degraded performance from google services (youtube, drive, google.co.za, etc). I also no longer experience any packet loss as I did before. Same story on my axxess capped account. No issues at all.

Logic points to the Afrihost network or the shaping tools used by them as the culprit.
Good luck sorting it out.

Indeed.

Every since I moved over to a IS based backbone from AH/MTN my internet just feels more responsive too. Even using the same Google DNS servers, clicking a link it just loads instantly, and it feels like a 20MB connection should.

At first I thought it was placebo, but it isn't.

Yo AfriMan.

I've been a customer of Afrihost for a few years now and I've only recently gone back to ADSL after using your mobile option for about 18 months. I'm having latency issues when playing on EU servers with a few of my games. I have a 2MB ADSL line (waiting for Telkom to upgrade to 4MB) with a 150GB capped account. I've tried your uncapped to see if it makes a difference, but nothing. I've tried a few other ISP's to make sure it's not my line. WebAfrica's latency is pretty decent with no lagg issues. Do you have a specific option for online gaming I could try?

It's a bit hard to tell here, essentially what's happening here is that your exchange doesn't accept ICMP packets, hence the timeouts. Nothing serious though.
The best way to get a good comparison is to run the same tests on another network to see if the issues can be replicated.

Hi :)

I know we implemented a bunch of tweaks for some games to have latency fixed up, what games in particular are you having issues on?
