Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Once again packet loss on Teamspeak is so high that I can barely connect to the server. Multiple restarts of router with no effect, yet with Web Africa my connection is perfect.
I was able to use teamspeak flawlessly for more than 2 hours and then when I switch back to Afrihost, everything is **** again...

Thanks for the the year that I was with you while your network was still good, before MTN screwed up everything, but this last 6 or so months has been absolutely horrible.

Between the packet loss, non existent speeds on torrents and the shaping that is almost never lifted anymore, I am done.
You can only blame outside factors so many times, but when you can connect to other ISP's and get perfect performance, then the fault lies with you.

Cancelling my account tomorrow.

I rather wish my patience had ended about 5 days ago, then at least I wouldn't have to sit with Afrihost for another month.

EDIT: Saturday: was able to use Teamspeak for about 4 hours and then packet loss got high again. GW2 started lagging again as well. Had to use other ISP for the rest of the day.

Did you read my post above yours?

I did, and I was one of the first ones who pointed out that QUIC it's been around for a while, along with other links about it.

There is nothing wrong with Chrome, or the Google implementation of it - let's just leave it at that. You are not technical and do not know how your shapers and network inspection actually work.

By the way, it's been more than a month since you said the guys would look into that compensation query I logged and still nothing. What's the excuse now?

Just to re-iterate what AfriGuy said, we definitely don't rely on a URL to identify P2P traffic. We inspect packet signature.

We also don't block sites, so shaping will only slow download traffic to and from sites, never block them from browsing. In fact, browsing the site should never be affected at any time :(

Sat pm. Started a torrent via torrentz. All good. 10 mins later torrent squeezed down to hell. Nice word, shaping. Try torrentz, torrenting, torrentfreak. All don't load. All https. Other https sites respond. Tell me another story, don't just deny.

About a month ago I lodged a ticket due to terrible torrent speeds, issues with real-time services and in-game latency (the issues were/are always coming up, irrespective of the time of day). Before that it was my inability to stream Netflix and before that more latency in games.

Imagine my excitement when earlier today (having not really gamed in about a month) i discovered that BF4 was unplayable due to lag. You have lost a customer of many years due to your inability to provide a reliable service.

In a world of ever increasing FTTH plays it boggles my mind that there are still ADSL providers who aren't bending over backwards to satisfy their client base - a technologically superior competitor is coming for your clients and you don't seem to be doing a thing about it. To make matters worse Afrihost doesn't even enjoy a monopoly, i'm going to another ADSL provider whilst i wait for my fibre...

I have now called accounts and my package has been cancelled. I have always liked Afrihost (they have truly amazing support and they have always been friendly/quick to respond) but you simply can't expect people to pay you several hundred Rand per month for a service that makes you feel lucky to be even be able to Google things, stream Youtube videos at 360p or download torrents at more than 13Kbs.

Good luck guys.

I played some Fifa on PS4 this morning and I had really bad lag. Now I know the EA severs ain't great but when I enabled turbocharge on my account, my games became lag free for the hour after that the lag started again....

Who are you signing up with?

Morning Qrox

Really sorry about these issues, I know things have been far from ideal, especially this weekend :(
We did see higher than normal latency.

If you'd like, drop me a PM with your details and I can see if I can help you out with the cancellation.

This definitely sounds like an odd one.
While things haven't been the best from our end, the performance you're mentioning here seems out of place :( Would you mind dropping me a PM with the details so I can have this replicated from my end?

Really sorry to hear about the ongoing frustrations here, I can fully understand where you're coming from here :(
I see you're in CPT, we saw higher than normal latency this weekend which I think covers your post. Drop me a PM and I can see if I can speed up the cancellation for you, if you'd like.

That's pretty weird :(
If the latency was OK during turbocharge it should have been good without it too - especially if you're gaming. Are you just seeing this with Fifa or other games on PS4 too?

It's not an odd one, it's happened quite a few times over the past three weeks. Another poster brought it up originally. The website throttling coincides with the torrent 'shaping'. That word really sticks in my throat. It is obscene.

I've cancelled my account. Not that i have high hopes of another SA ISP performing better. By and large you are all pretty nice guys, it is not personal. But the SA business culture of making the customer solve the problem gives me the creeps.

And I'm officially free ...... thanks for all the courteous and friendly help AH reps, if that could be applied to the network there'd be no problems, heh. Good luck going forward, hope you get back your mojo ;)

Again, I need to stress that our shaping rules do not work like that. Shaping is based on packet signatures, not URL filters. Any torrent website is a website, and our shaping sees it as such.
Using the torrent, connecting to trackers etc is seen as a torrent due to it's packet signature.

Sorry to hear that you've cancelled, we've been very willing to troubleshoot and replicate and issues from our end.

Sorry to see you go dude, hopefully you'll be back soon though!
Fully understand and respect the reasons for leaving though. Keep an eye on the thread though, I'm sure we'll be back to uber cool really soon :)

Have a good one!

Shaping is a result of an outdated and shortsighted business philosophy and a lack of understanding/vision as to where the internet is heading, and results in creating 90% of your problems.

But, unless hell freezes over and some ISP's management acquires some vision, the chances of me returning are high. :D

I think shaping needs to happen on certain accounts. Simply unshaping everything will never, ever work.
Either way, if you'd like me to have a look at things on your account you're welcome to PM me.

Why are you ignoring my questions?

I want feedback on my call that has been open since the 9th of April - HFY-939-87084
Are you going to compensate me for the bad experience on the network, as confirmed by the rep posts here and the info I sent in, or are you going to send me on the Afri-runaround again?

After a month you should either know if I'm getting some refund, or not.

Our team have replied to you, they need more info on the ticket.

I gave them my traces, I gave them the posts to this forum where the reps said there was an issue, you and other Afri people have said that you'll get back to me and this is what I get? You need more traces? When I already provided everything, and cannot give you any more traces since I'm no longer an Afrihost customer? And how are traces a month down the line relevant in anycase?

So what now?
