Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

I only have 1 small issue but I don't think it is ISP related, my windows updates seem to download but wont install, keeps telling me updates are available, I download and they just dont install.

I recently reinstalled Win7 on my netbook and windows update kept failing to download W7 SP1, on MWEB and on Afrihost, so I don't think it's an ISP issue more than an update server issue. I just downloaded the SP from microsoft.com and installed it that way to solve my problem. Smaller updates didnt seem to have an issue. This has been within the last week.

Try to download Autopatcher and install the latest updates, sometimes Windows Update has an update for itself that doesn't install and breaks updating miserably. After that it should work again till the next time it breaks :P

@afriman must I log a support ticket for Windows updates not working? Im sure it's a new issue. Since on MTN none of my home PCs can do Windows updates. Never had issues before.

Cool I will try that, thanks!

It also appears that FTP-traffic is shaped to 512KB, regardless of time of day or FTP-server.

Wasn't a problem pre-migration/MTN. Logged a ticket - hopefully it will get resolved. Most of my work traffic is via FTP - so this could become an issue if a solution cannot be found.

So far only have an issue with FTP.

Anyone else out there experience this?

Having a bad Afrihost day.
Since the move to MTN my location is totally whack. Speedtest.net shows Durban as 600km away and I'm in Pietermaritzburg.
Youtube seems to be finely tuned but other video sites like GorillaVid are unusable and that's on a 10M uncapped Line - also tried my wife's capped package and the same poor performance. Tried my work's Telkom capped (on the same line and modem) and no problem at all.
To make matters worse I was on hold on the help line for 27 minutes to get cut off - still waiting for a response to my support ticket.

I just tested a 45mb download from my server in germany via FTP. Sat an average of 80kB/sec - bursts up to 90 odd sometimes but averages out 70-80kB/sec

Tested another from a Hetzner CPT server - 10MB file went at a solid 300kB/sec (4MB line with torrents capped @100kB/sec running)

Hey guys

If anyone is having speed issues or not able to connect (I assume you might be viewing this page on 3G), please make sure you READ this:-

http://www.afrihost.com/help/dns

Change DNS, flush DNS and then reboot. That's helping a lot of guys get a more stable connection.

Diablo 3 Update:

Its still broken as of tonight. Latency fluctuates between 260ms and 550ms and the game is very frustrating to play due to the rubber-banding effect. When I switch to my FNB Connect account, my latency is a consistent 206ms; honestly it doesn't budge by more than 5-10ms through the evening.

AfriMan, you asked for a tracert, but I don't think it is of much use here since the actual game server that I am connected to (as reported by my router) is ICMP blocked. Nevertheless, here is a tracert as far as it will get.

Nothing out of the ordinary there, in fact, it's good. I'm not sure what other evidence I can provide here, so all I can hope is that others can also put their two cents in and we sort this out asap.

Correct me if I am wrong but using the supplied dns on Afrihost's site suggest that were still using IS or being routed trough IS's network? So were not yet fully running on MTN yet? (reason for asking is that i can connect on IS news servers with above dns)

Im having the exact same issue with diablo 3 normally I had 200ms now its everywhere from R259 to 5000ms. On Cybersmart/PCFlive is 100%

Not sure if its relevant, but my Afrihost 1GB capped account (also MTN) is just as bad in Diablo.

Good news in that its not some throttling mechanic on the uncapped accounts.
Bad news in that this could mean its only part of a far bigger problem.

4th night in a row my uncapped 10mb account cant even reach speeds of 4mb, change to any IS account or telkom account and back to full speeds of 8mb

anyone else out there getting frustrated with this mtn network and speeds , latency

im not prepared to keep sending tracerts to afrihost support surely they can see there are issues

grrr

My diablo was crappy too. Till I realized my media server was pulling 30 concurrent nntp streams. Throttled it to 50% of line, and happiness.
