This is very frustrating and just unacceptable. Last night I had to raid with pings of 400-600ms if I logged onto our guild Mumble channel.

I would also like to know what the new "abuse" thresholds are and if these speeds & latencies on speedtest could be expected to ever improve?

I can't even stream a 128kpbs radio station any more :( just keeps cutting out. My games have been all right, ping is fairly stable, didn't DC last night for a change. Giving it till end of Feb to see how it goes, but if nothing changes then I'm changing, no point paying for my 2mb currently maxing 512kbps line, if for a little bit more I can get an actual 2mb line instead of 25% of a 2mb line  Afrihost reeled me in with their prices, but it's no longer a factor any more.

1.5 Mbps on a 4Mbps uncapped account is not acceptable. I don't derive any sort of pleasure from complaining about stuff like this, so I'm hoping this issue can be resolved quickly. If I don't see results soon, I, like many others, will be left with no choice but to leave AH. This has been like this for about a week now and battling to stream 720p YouTube videos, even after hours, is not a pleasant experience. Only used 23.8GB so far this month, so I doubt I'm being shaped or throttled.

@AnyoneFromAfrihost

I am currently getting 116 Kbps down and 35kBs up on my 2mb line.

Is this acceptable? I would like to know because if I am never going to see the speed I am paying for then whats the point.
Since the move to MTN I have logged plenty of tickets, Sent lots of emails and PM'ed multiple representatives on this site. Every time I log an issue the ticket gets marked as closed without asking me to verify or I was given another account to try. I'm getting tired of using work a rounds I am paying for a service and it should be simple and just work.
Its funny how every day there are 30 new pages of people posting proof that the network is battling but the afrihost site always says everything is just peachy.

Currently downloads (and i don't mean p2p) seem to be going at 50% during the day when lots of people browse and at 25% at night when lots of people game when am I ever going to get full speed?

Hi There Please PM me your Afrihost account details so I can take a look :)

while I thank SpecialOps-Afrihost for the capped account to finally get full speed, I would still prefer to use my account and not need these work arounds. Would like to know what the real problem is and why its taking so long to fix!!
Thought the whole mtn move gave them more control over their network and should mean they can fix issues faster .... but it seems like the opposite right now!!

Nice job afrihost, you totally screwed me over.

I had a deadline on some work, that was supposed to get done last night, and be sent out, and your wonderful network lost my connection - for over 4 hours, i lost connection at 10pm, and it was still disconnected at 2am when i went to sleep. I don't have a spare adsl account around that I can just put in in case you guys don't know what you're doing.

Thanks to you, I'm now out of pocket.

Not to mention the poor pings in online games on the occasional night I have time to play, and the **** downloads speeds, that it takes me 3 times longer to download and upload work than it should.

Not to mention the poor communication, no status message, no sms telling me there is a problem and you're working on it. Nothing, and I phone a friend to check the network status on your site to find out what's happening - and your wonderful site says the network is "fully operational" your network hasn't been fully operational for a while.

You don't move your entire client base over to an inferior network that evidently cannot handle the load without contingency plans, or proper communication in the least.

Not to mention some of the other ****ty stuff you guys are doing (legal action ****ty) - which i won't mention right now, as he should mention it.

Just spoke to someone from Afrihost who gave me a decent explanation for all this.

From what I can gather, the situation is as follows:

a. The speed issues ARE due to general network issues and NOT targeting of specific users based on any kind of usage / abuse / etc. criteria. So there is no new monitoring or threshold system in place etc. etc. It is purely a network issue.

b. The network issue is fundamentally a problem with coping with the load. It's simply not coping right now. And the reason for that is primarily because the migration from IS to MTN was supposed to be a phased migration whereby the uncapped accounts would be moved across in batches to mitigate exactly these kinds of problems by spreading the migration over a period of time while additional network infrastructure was still being rolled out on the MTN side. This hasn't happened and evidently Afrihost were forced to move ALL of the uncapped accounts across already, prematurely.

c. The throttling being experienced is protocol specific. In other words it applies specifically to large downloads from servers that are being connected to on specific ports (563 SSL etc.). We all know what that means :)

The throttling should NOT be affecting normal browsing, video streaming from YouTube, etc.

d. Additional infrastructure IS being rolled out right now to sort this out and the throttling that is being enforced is an emergency measure to keep the network as a whole functional and responsive. That's why late at night your speed suddenly jumps back to max again and holds there for around six hours straight (check your usage logs and you will see the pattern clearly).

Realistic estimates for return to complete normalcy are early January apparently.

To be honest, that all sounds like a reasonable explanation to me. I'm not thrilled about it but it's not a train smash either.

In practical terms, that means:

1. You can still pull down around 20GB per day at least.

2. You can still browse, stream video and do other normal (you know what I mean ;) ) things at full speed

3. This is temporary.

4. It's still 200 bucks a month cheaper than MWeb.

For me personally, now that I've been given a reasonable explanation that actually makes some kind of sense and doesn't sound like a fabricated excuse or sidestep, I'm happy to keep rolling with my Afrihost account and just ride it out provided that things don't get any worse and assuming that they will actually improve.

I do, however, agree with many comments on this forum that communication with us could be a lot more pro-active from Afrihost. They need to acknowledge these kinds of core issues sooner and more openly.

so yesterday i was giving a youradsl.unshaped to try out, must admit it was much better with pings around 210ms. Then around 2100 it just failed, all the lights were on but couldn't load anything at all. Switched back to the specialops@afri and the pings went right up to 250ms+ (were around 220ms), tried my normal uncapped 4mb account and well 254+ms pings. Tried all this am, youradsl gets the connection but squat loads, specialops nothing under 250ms and now back to my normal account and well

Test conducted on 14 November 2012 13:03
Download Speed: 429 kbps (53.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 302 kbps (37.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

All i ask for presently is a ping of around 210ms (160ms when the IPC is in place or better) atleast 2mb D/L on my 4mb line. I do less that 1GB per day and thats a heavy traffic day and ofcourse no mini-dc's...
Still waiting on the outcome of my line speed fault report?

Why? It is starting to sound like IS kicked AH off their grid for some reason.
