Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

I'm an Afrihost subscriber currently on the 50gig for R399 package. The reason for this, is that I was running away from the shaping as it is horrendous. I have a 4mbit line

I have a two questions regarding the uncapped packages. (I will typically use 50 - 100 gigs a month)

1. What is your shaping policy? (i.e. Shaping times, and what the threshold for throttling is)
2. Difference between business uncapped and normal uncapped (especially shaping wise)
3 What is the priority for data when shaped. I love Youtube, is it affected?

I do a lot of downloading from file sharing websites btw.

Hey Zweli

1. Our QoS gives highest priority to real times services throughout the day. As demand for bandwidth decreases, we give whatever capacity remains to downloads, but during peak we give lowest priority to torrents and P2P.

2. Business Uncapped is unshaped during office hours, no matter what your usage is. It can be shaped after hours, should usage be extremely high (but the thresholds are pretty high).

3. Priority is pretty much anything real time, browsing, streaming (youtube would be included), gaming, SSH, VoIP - then HTTP downloads (when we implement new changes to QoS) - then torrents and P2P, NZB's, etc.

And if I recall, they had at least three in 2011. Doesn't sound like much but when you have a mission critical solution, it's not pretty.

I'm not sure if the infrastructure we were shown was in place then, they did say some of the upgrades were very recent, especially at Gallo Manor. We'll be moving some of our internal systems very soon, so we're pretty confident things are as stable as possible. As I said, the IPC is housed at a DC in New Doornfontein where they are on the process of constructing a new power plant, so power is not going to be an issue. And even then there are still generators, mobile generators, pretty much every scenario is catered for.

I challenge anyone to do that amount of throughput on the Afrihost 10mbps uncapped.

inb4 Cape Town IPC, blah blah connections, blah blah X gbps blah blah MTN is great.

Not sure when the changes will go live. I'll check with the Dev team in the morning and see what's potting :)

been having pure internet joy for a week or two now ....... alas

Test conducted on 22 January 2013 21:32
Download Speed: 892 kbps (111.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 135 kbps (16.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 556 ms

Do you perhaps use a logitech keyboard? I notice all sentences start with two caps. My new logitech keyboard does that.
 
We're busy testing the revision to our QoS at the moment, so hoping it will be implemented very soon.

Just to make sure that we include the right priority - can I get your feedback on what types of files / services are suffering over HTTP, which we need to address in this revision?

If I can get as much info as possible, I'll make sure it gets included in the testing :)

It's not a problem limited to Logitech, and it's simply a delay in caps lock turning off. I can't remember when or on what hardware I had that problem (I've never used a Logitech keyboard), but I'm sure installing the relevant driver sorted it out.

Why not just use shift? Pushing caps twice just to capitalise your first letter seems excessive :-)

Hi Afriman

The content of the http does not seem to matter. Whatever it is drivers, updates, music, etc it is all slow through http download. Also going through any file hosters is the same thing (rapidshare, bitshare, etc), it is less than 10kb/s through the day. Hope this helps you.
