Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Same here.....Is Afrihost networks this over subscribed? We will overload our networks to maximize profits at the expense of our clients(Shaping policy)? 25% throttle on Downloads and 6.5% P2P? Can we be told the reason for this excessive throttling?

It's not a question of oversubscribing, but changing usage patterns of the network. From the day we lit up the Cape Town IPC we've seen an incredible amount of usage, especially on torrents on file sharing. Capped and Business products are performing well, but we do need to bring consumer Uncapped in line to ensure that current usage patterns don't overwhelm the network. We're doing our best to ensure that while Uncapped users are using P2P increasingly, we can offer a good internet experience and still give a reasonable amount of bandwidth to those services.

Also had a wierd thing, my torrents and downloads were on 50% shaping for both of them.

Checked on Monday night and ran the turbo charge for 1 hour and since then i have no shaping :P

We're glad that Turbocharged worked nicely for you. With increased P2P traffic, we do need to shape to give the best experience to everyone, but at least Turbocharge puts control back into your own hands.

Demand may have decreased while you were turbocharged, and that's probably why there's no shaping at the moment :)

How are torrents dealt with on the business uncapped accounts? I am looking at switching to Afrihost Business Uncapped.

There is no shaping on Business DSL during the day, and while we do our best to not shape after hours, we may shape in extreme cases. Generally though after hours is not shaped.

That makes sense thanx Afriman. And it is also very cool that Afrihost explains it to us and that it is shown on Clientzone so we are aware of whats happening any why. Strange that other SA ISP don't show this info and were just stuck in this grey zone of why are some applications running slow. And checking now shaping was removed

I'm happy with Afrihost :)

Glad to hear that it all makes sense. Our aim is to be as transparent as we can at all times After all, we don't see ourselves as separate from our clients, so hoodwinking clients or hiding key information is very shortsighted - in my opinion :)

Well after 2 months of zero issues on TI I've decided to give AH one last (probably) chance as I've always preferred their customer service and client zone tools :) so far so good.. though it's only been a day - let's see how it goes :-)

What grey zone? Some ISPs reward you with little stars!

Does an uncapped account's email fall into this topic or must I make a new topic? Sometime back I changed my email address from Mweb (been there for years) to Afrihost, notified people. shortly after the move to mtn a commercial website in the states tells me email to me is bouncing. Afrihost support tell me the problem is their side. The website is too busy to trouble shoot. I ignored it. My brother tells me an email from his Yahoo account bounced back, he also too busy to trouble shoot. MotoGp's newsletters stopped, they said it looks like my mail box is full. Er I clear it numerous times a day ............ I contact support ................ bad move ................ me upset again !!!!!!!!!!
Stupid answers.............. NOTHING wrong with their system it is MY fault that email isn't being delivered. So guys watch out for Afrihosts flaky email system.

Our mail is generally rock solid, I'm pretty surprised to hear you are having these type of issues. Our mail servers have not moved with the DSL move to MTN, so there has been no network or connectivity change in terms of mail.

Will you drop me a PM?

AfriMan, if i get business uncapped, will i get throttled after hours?

None of our products are ever throttled, we only shape Uncapped DSL - based on demand. Business will be guaranteed unshaped during office hours. Our intention is not to shape after hours either, but if there is a major network issue, we may shape. But this would be in cases like IPC outages (i.e. extreme) and our plan is generally to not shape Business DSL after hours.

Thanks AfriMan, you are the best, will be joining AfriHost as soon as my nightmare experience ends with openweb.
