so glad for this thread .... was actually considering giving Afrihost a try again, as its been about 6 months since I left them after their move to MTN, and it seems that nothing has really changed ... still shaped/throttled to about 25% of the account you paid for ... guess I will just stay with mweb, unless anyone can recommend another decent ISP

Depends on what you are looking for in an ISP. Mweb is too pricey, and I have heard their news server is not great.

Respect your choice to choose whichever ISP best suits your needs. Just note that the guys being shaped are only in the Southern region. Just about everyone in the North and Eastern regions are running pretty much unshaped, and are not having issues at all.

Best way to make sure you check out what our network is doing is to sign up a Free GB for life, that way you can test at any time. And with Business prices being pretty much only a fraction of a polony skin higher than consumer, its pretty realistic to measure what unshaped DSL will be like :)

So after 2.5 months of perfect netflixing on telkom internet i give afrihost a chance.. now two days later and its endless buffering - not my line, its afrihost, starting to regret

Still getting latency on LoL 30ms+ more than other ISPs. Also packet loss. Very unhappy about international gaming on AH.

Please drop me a PM so we can look into this. Our staff using netflix at home have been reporting great service, so we'll have to check what's different.

Did you manage to run the traceroutes I suggested in our PM convo? Will definitely help us get to the bottom of any issues.

Not sure where PE falls in here, although last time I checked I route through CT. More importantly I have been shaped once in the last month (blame World of Warcraft's 20Gb update) and it lifted once the download was complete.

Shaping appears to be working the way it should for me. Heavy download for extended period = shaped. After download is complete = no shaping. Seeing as I only did that one big download, only been shaped once.

Very satisfied customer.

BTW- Latency from PE is vastly improved since 3 months ago.

Untitled.jpg . And im paying less at Afrihost. Mweb use to buy more and downloaded less. So far im happy at Afrihost. I have never been shaped before.... Day or Night. :D

Agree Roadcat - All round Excellent speed for me as well here in PE and no shaping :)

thanks for the response Afriman. I am in Durbs, so from what you said, I should not experience these issues??
Also, I do not think the 1GB for life will be a proper reflection, as people seem to be complaining about being shaped/throttled based on "excessive" usage. Also, business will not work as you guys shape/throttle that in the evenings.
I would like give the account a try, worst case is it does not work and I move some place else ... damn ... knew I should have put in that cancellation with mweb last month :(

I agree about being pricey, which is why I was looking at Afrihost, but will be cheaper to stay with mweb if you only getting 25% of the speed you pay for at Afrihost :)

I am looking at moving to Afrihost, but when you mention the southern region users being shaped, it makes me worry. I am based in Cape Town. Are there any plans to fix whatever issues you have in the southern region?

Well, if you are comparing a Free GB to a Business DSL, the performance should be more or less the same, particularly in the day. The only difference between Capped Unshaped and consumer Uncapped (if unshaped) is QoS applied to ensure that your own services run smoothly (i.e. if you are running competing services locally, real time will get preference).

As far as I know, East Coast is experiencing little to no shaping at the moment :)

Well, if you look at the range of options you have within a small jump in price, I think our Capped, Uncapped and Business Uncapped offer very reasonable options for pretty much anyone. But it's always good as the consumer to choose what suits you best :)

Same here. Although probably routed via PE then CT. Would I be in the same (leaking) boat? And how is business uncapped performing after-hours in CT with this current issue?

We are reviewing the impact and possible scenarios. The difficulty is the time period. What we see is areas of high demand for a few hours of the day, while other times of the day usage is a lot less (and minimal at times). We want to also encourage clients to also use the available bandwidth during those times, instead of all queueing at the same time. We're looking at different ways to accomplish this, but essentially we don't really mind how much bandwidth is moved.
