Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

I'm thinking of Getting 2mb uncapped From afrihost but i am very worried about shaping .
Id say i use about 150gig - 200gig a month and usually leave downloads on from 12pm - 5pm

im not too worried about shaping during the day as i work all day

Im with everyone on this. Not fair to CPT people and PE people if we get shaped because some guys are too stupid to schedule downloads etc. CPT has a problem and if you tell me the guys in DBN are hardly getting shaped and we are getting shaped into the ground and we both pay the same per month then that is not fair.

Is this even being looked at or is the capacity never going to be upgraded?

Maybe start a new leader board for CPT users as well.

We are aware of the capacity issue and we try our best to help cope with the demand but it helps if people are aware of their usage patterns and when they should schedule torrents.

12pm to 5pm is during the day :p or did you mean 12am to 5am.

You will get shaped. Trust me, maybe consider the business account as that is apparently unshaped. Also where do you live as that makes all the difference

While I'm happy with afrihost, I would like to know why the paying customers should schedule downloads to help with your capacity problems? This does not sound fair to me.

12pm or 12am?

Our shaping policy is mentioned on our AUP. We shape your downloads but your realtime activities aren't shaped, so you can stream or game, without being shaped. We also shape according to whether the network is under pressure or not. This may vary according to time of day.

Thanks for the reply and pm. I reckon we need a survey or something and to check on customer satisfaction for all connected to the CPT IPC.

Don't get me wrong I love Afrihost and am happy but I dont like getting shaped more than the guys in DBN or JHB because we route via CPT.

What about maybe adding a day turbocharge or something as well? I am going to be downloading BF4 at the end of October and if Im shaped by the end of the month I dont want to sit and have to turbocharge after turbocharge to get it downloaded. Maybe a 24 hour turbocharge can be looked at? :D

Im in JHB

i did mean 12pm to 5 pm lol
i know its during the day , as i am at work 99% of the time , never really noticed it . was on mweb previously and it wasnt an issue as i dont really download alot

its mostly steam / origin / updates that use up alot of my bandwidth
is it more about patterns than amount used ?

i just dont want to be shaped while im playing my games , 5pm - 10pm and weekends

Gaming is classified as a realtime activity, so it won't get shaped. Your pm downloads might get shaped depending on what the network is like at that time. We shaped from heaviest users to lightest.

I can say from experiance that my gaming is mostly unaffected. I did have an issue on Planetside 2 recently which clearly got affected by the shaping but its hard to check if its sorted out as at this moment im not shaped.

If you start to dl that amount and they start to shape I reckon you might get shaped during the day. Usually shapes from around 9 in the morning till around 12 at night. I am routed via CPT so you might be smiling in JHB

The nice thing is at least Afrihost tells you when you are shaped and not try hide it like Mweb did to me.

I have been happy though going from Mweb to Afrihost. Just my 5c

We do have a 24 hour turbocharge, it's called Business Uncapped! (Joking ;) )

Seriously though, we try our best to make sure we provide the best experience where we can. I'll pass your suggestion along and see what the powers that be have to say.

ADSL line activation can take up to 14 days. Depends on Telkom.

Last month I downloaded 85 gigs on a 2mb, that is around 65gigs less then I normally download, however for most of the month I was shaped (25% HTTP, 6.5 P2P) from 8am to 11.59pm.

I'm in CT

Moar daytime pirates than nighttime ones :P

That's why I don't agree with their new shaping policy of shaping according to how busy the network is instead of putting bandwidth hogs in the naughty corner so they don't chow all the bandwidth. The old way was better IMHO. Now everyone must suffer.

So why pay R696 for 24hr Turbo when you could get business for the whole month and at a cheaper price!

Their theory is: we all suffer equally - But I don't agree with that. Do a threshold - E.g. after 150gb (just an example - replace amount with whatever you think is fair) your line starts falling into different tiers (and do various ones) - to limit abuse but can keep good throughput. Unfortunately we are also region based - Cape Town and Eastern Cape usually you find get nailed quite badly. I have moved over to a Business account because of this. Runs great 24/7 but I just come from where you are, and how it drives a person crazy - Cursed shaping.

That's how it used to be when they were with IS. When they did the MTN move and everything went pair-shaped, I ended up cancelling last year 5th Nov and moving to Plugg. Paid for 2 accounts that month just to get away, and no "we are sorry our network is stuffed, here is a pro-rata refund" or anything. They on my ***** list now. Still have my capped account tho.
