Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Trying to download a series to watch on a 2mb is a nightmare on a Friday Night. Pathetic.

U have a better chance Netflixing or Huluing with Afrihost, which I assume is the objective they aiming for.

That means an extra R200 plus a credit card, which I don't have. Plus I prefer HD and a that isn't possible on a 2mb. :(

Hi m.zakariyya.g

I assume you talking about the business option? I would be hesitant to fall for that option as I am only paying R32 more while keeping my line with telkom (4mb), 2mb would be R42 more. Since I left their uncapped last year Nov after their move from IS to MTN (still an Afrihost customer tho with other accounts), when everything was working brilliantly for months and months, suddenly nothing worked, not enough capacity, so I left, other people stayed (I admire their patience and loyalty) and it also took months and months to upgrade the situation. Now it looks like they are starting to have capacity issues again, only in CT I've noticed.

So, since I was happy when they were using IS, decided to stay with IS. I can download what I want when I want (within reason), and I think u don't have to have a CC but don't treat that as gospel. Bear in mind tho that during the day it can be shaped to around quarter to full speed (depending on load on the network ) and streaming is pretty crappy, still possible but at a lower quality and maybe waiting a bit to buffer. This doesn't bother me as I am at work. After 5pm I get full speed on everything.

So, if you want daytime performance, then you have to pay the R200 (R100?)

Just realised that when you were mentioning your CC, you were talking about being able to register with netflix etc. Oops.

PM me if you want any more details.

I'm so close to leaving Afrihost. Thinking my previous problems were my routers' fault I went and bought three new routers (two to boost wifi) at a cost of R2.5k. Well the issues didn't stop - I still have to reboot my primary router at least 3-4 times a day to restore normal connectivity and quite frequently my connection is not able to connect. I can't connect this very moment in fact. It doesn't help that streaming is very poor even at the best of times.

I'm syncing below my line's theoretical maximum and my stats are good. Trace routes usually reach Cape Town in under 10ms. I'm on 4Mbps business.

Don't know what's been going on for the past couple of days in the Northcliff/Albertville/Newlands area, speeds are extremely slow and I can't even watch 2 minutes of the TdF without the feed buffering.

Shaping on Sunday, this is unfair. Sorry to keep complaining but surely you have to have some sort of limit. If Openweb and Plugg offer unshaped weekends, why can't you? 80% of businesses are closed, where is that capacity?

Are you sure it is shaping? I am pretty much having full line speed available to do anything.

Definitely being shaped, clientzone says so. Plus download speeds fall in line with what clientzone says. (25%)
Th frustrating thing is it is not even light shaping, it's heavy shaping. 60kBps on a 2mb means HD downloads aren't worth the time.

I just joined AH on a 1mb uncapped account. so far i have used 6.2gb and already getting shaped.

Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P.

I've noticed my account is progressively getting slower and slower and being shaped more often for longer? Afriman/guy/girl? Is this because there are more clients in Cape Town than what the IPC can handle?

Switch to a 1meg Business uncapped account, it's only R100 more, you wont be sorry.... I can max out my line anytime of the day and have never been shaped in the 3 months of having the account.....

A side note - surely if I downgrade from a 10mb account to a 4mb, the speed should only adjust in the new month, as I have paid for the current month's 10mb speed? If I'm right, then why the hell am I capping at 4mb speeds?

Did you ask their support staff? I'm pretty sure they can help with this kind of thing.

It's not your imagination. I've definitely noticed the same in Cape Town recently.

I am thinking of moving from OpenWeb Gold 6mbps to Afrihost Business 6mbps as I am finding OpenWeb slows down horribly from just after lunch time everyday up until late afternoon. I work from home and this is killing me.
OpenWeb have tried all sorts of things but the problem won't go away (other users report this too).

I contacted Afrihost for a trial account but no go. I want to make sure the same problem won't happen with Afrihost before making the jump.
Can anyone here on the business package tell me how it performs right through the day? Particularly in the JHB area as I understand speeds seem to vary a fair amount between the regions.
