Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

I am thinking of moving from OpenWeb Gold 6mbps to Afrihost Business 6mbps as I am finding OpenWeb slows down horribly from just after lunch time everyday up until late afternoon. I work from home and this is killing me.
OpenWeb have tried all sorts of things but the problem won't go away (other users report this too).

I contacted Afrihost for a trial account but no go. I want to make sure the same problem won't happen with Afrihost before making the jump.
Can anyone here on the business package tell me how it performs right through the day? Particularly in the JHB area as I understand speeds seem to vary a fair amount between the regions.

Have you tried with the free 1gb capped account? Not uncapped but at least will give you some indication.

No. The capped and uncapped accounts perform vastly differently.

I use the 4 mg uncapped, and I can say that most afternoons I am at home I end up switching to my capped afrihost account because the uncapped one is too slow.

A side note - surely if I downgrade from a 10mb account to a 4mb, the speed should only adjust in the new month, as I have paid for the current month's 10mb speed? If I'm right, then why the hell am I capping at 4mb speeds?

Nope! Immediately. Tells you in the last note.

We don't offer trial accounts, but as someone mentioned, you can use a Free GB account to get an indication of the unshaped experience. Otherwise you can also drop me a PM, and I can give you a discount link to use so that you can try out your first month at hugely reduced rate :)

U have a better chance Netflixing or Huluing with Afrihost, which I assume is the objective they aiming for.

Not sure whether this is their objective. I couldn't stream Twitch.tv or Youtube all weekend... getting speedtests between 0.25Mbps and 0.3Mpbs

I just joined AH on a 1mb uncapped account. so far i have used 6.2gb and already getting shaped.

Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P.

PE routes through Cape Town, so we are affected by the IPC capacity issues there. Browsing and real-time should not be affected though, so you will only feel it doing downloads and torrenting etc.

Remember that our shaping acts on active usernames. So if you were shaped the last time you logged off, that is what would display in ClientZone until you moved data, and it would be the starting profile until our system dynamically changes your profile onto the policy it should be on.

Definitely not, Streaming should always be at your best line speed, regardless of shaping. I know you were working with our specialist team. Has this still not been resolved? When last did they contact you?

Please PM me so I can catch up with this and follow up :(

Ok, so if i DL 3gb in one day on my 1mb line does that mean i will always get shaped when i do that. If so then when BF4 arrives in October it is gonna take me days to download the install if it is around 15gb. I might have to load at ordering the disc instead of the digital version.

Hasn't been resolved, but in your team's defence, I haven't been home a lot last week.

Will try to resolve it with them tomorrow night.

Don't worry about it for now, will start complaining more heavily if it can't get resolved! ;)

At what usage does Afrihost start to shape your account?
Was nice and fast last week but now downloads are down to 11kbps on my 2MB line

not even at home and i have just check clientzone
my dl for today: 803kb
Shaping Policy: 50% Download/ 50% P2P

Think the CT need to upgrade

No exact usage, it differs. It's usually very little though. But 11kbps on a 2mb doesn't sound like shaping because the worst level of shaping means 25%. 25% = Minimum speed: 60 kBps

It's got little to do with you (based on my experience as well). My view of the way it works:
  • CT IPC approaches certain level defined by AH
  • Shaping is implemented once this level is reached
  • Rolling 30 day highest users get shaped first
  • All the way down the list if capacity does not free up
  • So you might have downloaded 10Gb in the last 30 days but
  • The list has reached you anyway as capacity is still full
  • I'm guessing once the whole list is shaped the percentages then decrease from the top down

Out of curiosity..

Does the CT IPC have dedicated capacity for Uncapped Home users?

Otherwise shaping uncapped users is not going to help if the capacity is being used by Business users :)

Hi Afriman

I've had my 1MB uncapped line for 5 days now and downloaded 30GB so far

Just checked ClientZone and shaping has kicked in :(
25% Download/ 12.5% P2P

So much for expecting my download to be done by the time I get home from work...

I'm not at home now to test but is it safe to assume that my normal browsing would not be affected by this?

When will the shaping be lifted? This evening? Tomorrow?

Thanks

rhodad your download is probably going along at around 15kb\s right now so I doubt whatever you are downloading will be finished. My shaping usually lifts around 12 at night and then kicks in again around 7-9 in the morning.

Still think this is unfair as we are all paying for the same product but JHB and DBN users are getting better products.

I really hope that now Afrihost is the top rated ISP they start to look at this CPT IPC issue soon or the next time the stats come out they better ensure nobody connecting to that IPC gets surveyed :D
