Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Hey Afriman - You can take this to management :P

I think it may be time for the CPT IPC to gain a few GBPS, don't you?

Hi Afriman

I've had my 1MB uncapped line for 5 days now and downloaded 30GB so far

Just checked ClientZone and shaping has kicked in :(
25% Download/ 12.5% P2P

So much for expecting my download to be done by the time I get home from work...

I'm not at home now to test but is it safe to assume that my normal browsing would not be affected by this?

When will the shaping be lifted? This evening? Tomorrow?

Thanks

On a 1mb line he has downloaded 30 gigs, I on a 2mb line have downloaded 32.8 gigs yet my shaping level is even worse then his despite me paying you guys more

at this rate i will never make 30 gigs, only on 7 odd gigs now from the beginning of the month and got stuck with everyone's shaped bandwidth.

If I remember correctly the price of a 2 Mbps IP Connect service a few years back was about R 30 000 per month

If I sell a product to 3 different people in 3 different areas then I would want all 3 to get the same experiance from the product. If the people connecting to the CPT IPC are worse off than the others in SA then we should pay less for the product as we are not getting the same product as DBN and JHB users. Simple

I know that usage drops during the night but I am sure it drops off for the guys in DBN and JHB as well. It is painfully clear that CPT has an issue and I for one would like to find out from someone if this is being looked at and not just a customer rep from myBB. Maybe RPM can get an answer from Afrihost management if they are even aware of the issue and what steps are being done to correct this. Im not expecting to be unshaped all the time but to be shaped on a Sunday or for guys who have only downloaded 6gb for the month and are shaped to 12.5% then there is a problem.

Usage for the month: 11GB
15:47 - 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P

In the evenings it's not much better...

Last night after 0h00 I couldn't even stream youtube.

Pretty much useless account other than for P2P after 0h00. :(

Definitely not, Streaming should always be at your best line speed, regardless of shaping.

Something not quite right here?
According to AfriMan - Streaming is never shaped.
Soooooo.... kripstoe's YouTube experience should not have been affected.
Not so?

I'm on a capped Afrihost account, and experiencing issues. Line speed (Intl) is all over the place at the moment, and streaming is affected. So .. either exchange or IPC congestion.

I think just saying that capacity drops off between these times and thats why you cannot upgrade the IPC is not going to cut it. If its telkom then lets get an official response. If its Afrihost then we would also like an official repsonse.

What can we do to rectify this or is the only option to leave. I am very happy with Afrihost but this is leaving a bad taste in the mouth.

They also say gaming is never affected and yet I got shaped while playing Planet Side 2 and im not the only one. I am currently shaped down to 6.5% so lets see if I can play PS2 tonight. Ill report back tomorrow if they shape gaming as well

I know there have been a few posts about increasing IPC in Cape Town. I can promise that it is something we are always watching closely and we are definitely considering at a management level.

With regard to client's experience, we are confident that the capacity we provide is consistent with the number of users subscribed on the service. How (and when) users choose to make use of the bandwidth is out of our hands - except where shaping can bring some level of control over overall internet experience. Cape Town clients should definitely not feel that they are receiving a lesser product, but we can't control the times that clients choose to use their bandwidth. Even if you built a 10 lane highway, if everyone in the city decides to drive at the same time, there is going to be congestion.

However, as much as we are encouraging all Cape Town users to use the opportunity of less shaped or unshaped bandwidth after hours, we are also watching usage reports closely to seize the first opportunity to upgrade our capacity. If we can justify the upgrade with increased throughput and bandwidth moved, then we are definitely happy to do so. As I mentioned in previous posts, we need to demonstrate that the additional usage will fulfil a 24 hour capacity upgrade, not just relieve peak congestion while there is little to no usage off-peak for a large majority of the 24 hour cycle.

In any case, we have raised this issue with management, and we are assured that this is continually being discussed and monitored, and we want to absolutely assure our Cape Region clients that we will look into upgrading the IPC as soon as we see that it is viable, and we'll report that immediately here on MyBB should that become a reality.

Afriman how do you explain someone on 1 mb line who downloaded 2.3 gigs less then me yet still gets better service despite me paying more then him?

Hi Zak
I think that being a new customer, I got preferential treatment :) .
As of today, I share your frustration, my downloads are at a whopping 4kb/s

Afriman - When you guys shape, you really mean to shape hey!! Whats happening? Have I officially worn out the "new car smell"?

Is that p2p?

It depends on what his usage pattern is (i.e. when he is downloading or torrenting) and also how you are defining better service. We must establish a baseline and check exactly what his line performance his (compared to ideal sync rate) and then do the same for you.

You can PM me with yours and his username, and I'll see what the figures tell me. I'm assuming you are both in the same region (in terms of IPC)?

By better service I mean he has a slightly less bad shaping policy then me.

We don't shape generally during the first seven days, as there is not sufficient data to classify your usage or project usage based on the info we have. Thereafter, once we are able to establish a usage pattern, your shaping policy will be determined on an ongoing basis. based on the demand on the IPC at any given point in time.

Are we talking torrents here or straight HTTP file downloads?
